An amazing and deep game that gives the player a view into an alternate history of the early internet around Y2K. Not incredibly long if you just go through and do the case files, but is very easily replayable due to the amount of web pages you can go through and the things you can do to affect the ending. Each web page is very well crafted, and details that initially seem to just be worldbuilding can come back to be important in later cases, which was very cool to see. Also appreciate that the worldbuilding went deep enough to include an entire alternate history of musical genres that doesn't even come up in the main story at all??? The game is very obviously lovingly crafted and oozes charm, and I will be looking forward to future projects from these developers. Either a very high 8/10 or a low 9/10.
*Slight* Spoilers This game is an ode to the early days of the internet, when it was still whimsical and the creative drive was at an all time high. The design, music, storytelling, and characters are immaculate. It feels like stepping into a time machine and taking a look back into the past. I will say, I felt overwhelmed and overstimulated by how much was put in this game. You can tell the devs made this with so much love and passion. As the player, we witness the gradual decline of Hypnospace -- an analogy for the enshittificaiton of the internet. The game starts off so hopeful and slowly becomes tragic thanks to Dylan's actions. It ends on a bittersweet note, where all we're left to do is to find pieces of the past to archive them for the future. Great game. Also, f*ck Dylan.
Add the numbers, Read the lines, Block out the thoughts within my mind. Trapped in these desks till the end of each day, My thoughts, no, they should not stray. Yet with each day, work goes ignored, Without these thoughts I will be bored. And in my being each thought will grow, Until it is a worth foe. When the battles begin the casualties spread, I can feel the claws mutilate my head. And the bits and gibes leak from my ears, Fomring puddles of my greatest fears. They soil my shoes, soak my feet, They rule me over in but a single heartbeat.
