Hell Maiden picks up from the ending of the original Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri.
Dante is now inexplicably back in Hell after having reached Paradiso — and she's lost all her memories to boot! Unable to remember anything about her past life or her first journey through Hell, Dante is determined to climb her way back to Heaven and once again come face to face with Paradiso's higher powers in search for answers.
A compelling story about passion, justice and love, Hell Maiden is more than a reimagining of the classic poem — it is the exciting continuation of its events!

Let me quickly start out by saying the short and simple version: This game is worth 10 dollars. It's worth more than that actually, and this is an absolute steal. If you're even slightly interested in picking it up, I highly recommend. It's a little bit cluttered and could use some polish in a few areas, but it's insanely fun as is and I can't wait for more to be added. Now to dig into the nitty gritty a little bit more. When I first saw one of these "bullet heaven" games a few years ago, I thought they looked kinda silly and honestly unfun. I don't know, I've never been the biggest fan of this style of game for some reason that I can't explain. As a result, I like to think I'm a bit unbiased on my recommendation of this game. The only bias I have is that I liked Pocket Mirror and Little Goody Two Shoes, both games from Astral Shift, and that is solely the reason I decided to give this game a try. I love their art style, music, and overall presentation, so all of this hooked me in. Aside from this, I have no other reason to try this type of game. And despite this game being the first I've ever played in the genre, I love the Hell out of it. The story is intriguing, nothing crazy has happened so far, but there's a bit of a mystery involved that keeps you interested. The gameplay is really fun, and I love how wacky you can get with a lot of the cards (weapon mods) you can find. I had a run where I just kept adding projectile +1 and attack speed % to everything and I had abilities firing off left and right all over the place. I could just stand there and the entire screen was cleared of enemies. It was kinda goofy, but insanely fun and honestly a huge rush. Building off of that though is basically my one and only complaint: sometimes the clutter on screen is just a bit too much. Not only are a ton of your own weapons firing off every second or two, enemies are flinging dozens of shots from all over the place. Tiny enemies that are hardly even noticeable can sometimes sneak in from out of nowhere and damage you, enemy attacks can kinda blend in with your own attacks and hit you suddenly. It's a biiiit chaotic and hard to discern. It's definitely not IMPOSSIBLE to manage (I play League of Legends so I'm used to a buncha BS on screen) but it definitely could use some polish. I highly recommend adding an opacity setting, and maybe making it so all enemy projectiles are highlighted red. Maybe highlight the enemies in red too. To be honest, this is my only game I've played of this genre so I don't have a ton of suggestions, but that's what I came up with off the top of my head while playing. Now, to cap this review off, I'd like to highlight a lot of the strengths again. The art and music is BEAUTIFUL. The gameplay is FUN and has a lot of replayability. The story is interesting enough to keep you pushing forward. The characters are all very fun, and I like interacting with them whenever I can. Despite this being an Early Access game, there's a lot of content here to keep you entertained. I have about 5 hours so far, and I'm aaaalmost about to finish the 2nd Circle, so I probably have about 2ish more hours to go maybe. And all of this for 10 dollars???? Please do yourself a favor and just pick it up if you're here and thinking about it. It's a lot of fun and worth every penny! Looking forward to what comes next!
Dantehhh...Kiss me, Dantehhh...
Another gorgeous game by AstralShift, both visually and audibly. Not really a fan of Bullet Heavens (especially in early access), but this one's very welcome. In addition to the usual "pick weapon, then buffs," you manage a deck of four weapons, each with up to three buff slots. Placement matters too: some buffs only trigger on the slot to their left, others need to be adjacent, so your weapon order becomes part of the puzzle. You can also swap entire decks around (weapon + its three buffs) to shuffle your combos mid-run. My one complaint: runs end at 12 minutes and you're teleported straight into a boss fight. No complaints about there being an actual boss fight. But the whole transition is confusing on a first run. The timer counts up to 11 minutes, then suddenly switches to a 1-minute countdown, so you don't actually know how long a run is until you've already sat through one. Something like an upfront "20 minutes till dawn" style limit would've told you exactly what you're working toward from the start. On top of that, there's no explanation for why the boss fight starts right away. You just get teleported and you're suddenly talking to them. Overall: a very welcome game. For an early access title, it's already fun and smooth. Looking forward to seeing how it develops. In the meantime, I'd recommend checking out the team's past two titles.
