I loved the original, I lasted 97 minutes on this one before uninstalling it.
this is a review based on the base campaign and not the bonus levels. keep in mind that halo CE is my favourite game of all time and I'm pretty precious about specific things from it. I feel pretty conflicted about this game so I'll ramble a bit but there's a TL;DR at the bottom. I'm mainly writing this as not recommended as to signal to halo studios that as a halo fan, there's a lot here that I'm unhappy with, and even though it's a fun game that feels nice to play, even to someone who's basing almost this entire review on comparing it to the original, I would suggest someone new to halo to go play MCC instead. it's cheaper and more authentic as a halo experience. what I like: the game is fun. it feels fun to run around and shoot in. the environments look fantastic and the level redesigns are really good. yes, it's got sprinting and weapon zoom, but I played most of the game like those didn't exist and it played just fine. a lot of the weapon sounds are really good, barring a few here and there, but generally it's a positive. the music is exactly the same, and the new elite dialogue is hilarious and acted amazingly. what I don't like: primarily the voice acting. what the hell happened??? cortana's dialogue is so, so aimless, so much less dynamic than the original, I can't describe it any other way than saying it sounds like marvel movie dialogue. it's still the same actress but the direction is just so bad I'm genuinely confused at how it happened. johnson and keys are recast, and it's the same problem. the pacing of the dialogue in a lot of the cutscenes is completely off with some characters talking immediately after another, and some leaving long gaps between each other. some of the cutscene animations also feel a bit weightless and soem of the shot composition leaves a lot to be desired. it feels like it's trying *so hard* to be cool and epic and high production that it just falls completely flat. it feels like they hardly used the original as reference which is utterly vexxing to me. on top of that, the game holds your hand way too much. the original had a lot of moments where the level design allowed you to come up with alternative strategies or creative solutions to hard encounters, or even to be able to identify not-completely-obvious shortcuts. in this game, cortana makes sure that you know that you could yoink that banshee or that you can hang back while two different enemy types fight each other because she (the developers) doesn't trust you to be able to figure that out. the waypoints all over the levels are *fine* when it's a big open level to give you a basic idea of where you need to be, but when I'm in a small room with only two exits, I think I can figure that out on my own (also I know people say you can turn waypoints off but I genuinely couldn't find the option for it, I thought I did but apparently not). lastly, my keybinds get reset every single time I open the game. just plain annoying. also, I'm playing on a decent, albeit slightly old rig that could definitely use a new SSD while livestreaming, but on medium graphics I got more framedrops than I would've liked. TL;DR - the game is really fun, the presentation is great, the level design is solid, but the cutscenes and new voice acting ruined a lot of it for me. it's also very very hand hold-y. if you want to play halo for the first time, go play the master chief collection and play on the non-anniversary graphics.

14 of 15 markets; the rest we haven't asked for this title, not markets where it is unavailable.
14 on sale1 answered “not sold”0 we did not ask
The 1 “not sold” market is read from the Steam price pass of Sep 4: that day the store answered for this game elsewhere and gave no price there. The 14 priced markets are the same rows as the table above — each the latest price we hold, dated here when it is older than that pass. The 0 marked “not asked” were not put to this store at all — either it has no storefront there or we do not collect it yet, and neither is a statement about the game. A refusal is a refusal on one day; a store can list a title again tomorrow.

On Remix Mode on Easy, if you finish the sections to fast, you can softlock out of finishing the level and have to restart. Also laggy in certain sections.
I can tell that there are people who care about Halo who were working on this, but this game feels far from what Combat Evolved was supposed to be. No matter what video setting I choose, there is a ton of pop in, the lighting abruptly changes when I go from a naturally lit room to an artificially lit room, some of dialogue is way off. Johnson, and sometimes Cortana. I had to sit for over five minutes after the game launched to wait for the lighting to load in the main menu. I can go on and on. How is it that the OG game was developed by such a small team, and was the best of its time in every way? It really goes to show you how cool Bungie was back in the day. I'm enjoying this new take on the game, but it takes effort for me to do so. That's crazy. There's no multiplayer either. Huge waste of an opportunity. Unreal engine is Unreally realistic and soulless to me. I didn't even mind Halo 4. I'd rather play Halo 4 than Campaign Evolved any day. I'm going to keep waiting for Halo to get good again. What else am I going to do? All I got to say, is what everyone else is saying. How hard is it to listen to the fan base who has stuck around for this long? I gotta say though. Master Chief Collection is cool now! Let's keep that going! And lastly, the most fun I've had playing Halo in the past 10 years was bringing my OG Xbox and my Xbox 360 over to my friend's house and doing LAN and campaign playthroughs on CRT TVs! That was so cool. I've been playing that way more than this. I hope 343 cuts the crap and makes us a good game before I die. I read the damn books and everything, I love this game. Come on guys!!!! Come on!!!!!!!!!!! i7-9700 Evga GTX 1080 FTW 32GB DDR4 Forgot to mention that I'm not running an RTX card. But still. Studios should optimize their games more. If I did have a super nice $1,500 graphics card, I bet I would still get pop in, and this game would still look like crap. It's slop man. All this ♥♥♥♥ is trash. The ♥♥♥♥ am I supposed to do? This goes out to everybody man. ♥♥♥♥ em.
This game should of never been made, and I should of never bought into the BS. Miss the OG Halo.
it is very good...... oughhh i love halo. only issues right now are bugs that i expect to be fixed. (keybinds not saving on exit, enemies killing without playing melee animations, etc) the graphics are very good, the cutscenes are a huge improvement, the environments are very nice, vehicles are very neat, and all of this while still keeping the core of what makes ce - halo ce. the co op works really well, and the customization is fun. I liked the new bonus missions, despite everyone's protests- the characters aren't as bad as they're made out to be, and the gameplay is fun. especially cool space moments..... i just have OOOOONEEEE WISH. I reaaaaaallly wish that they would've just bit the bullet and added the new weapons to the mainline campaign. i mean, i'm not finished yet, so maybe they come along in the later half of the campaign? but so far it feels a little upsetting they're only there for the bonus missions, even if i know the reason- halo "enjoyers" cant stand a remake doing things ever so slightly differently than the original. (seriously i was really hoping they'd introduce the new weapons to the CE sandbox........) I want a remake to be an improvement of the original title, while still upholding its main story and identity. this game does that very well. It only makes me want more!!!
Steam really dropped the ball verifying this for Steam Deck. Even on the lowest settings, I have not gotten 15 seconds of gameplay without crashing.
Played Halo 1 during the Iraq war. Now, I got to experience Halo 1's Remake during the Iran war. Interesting coincidence, make that with what you will.
