I loved the original Gothic and Gothic 2 back in the day, so the Remake announcement got me excited. The demo was sobering, but I saw they were trying to course-correct, so I bought the game and tried to stay positive. After putting in a decent amount of time, I can only say that calling this a "Remake" is a joke.

Every session leaves me with the bitter aftertaste of generic UE slop
The German dubbing brought back some original voice actors, but they sound completely dead inside
SO. MANY. BUGS. And game-breaking ones. I have been locked in conversations as well as kept from progressing quests for no reason what so ever...
They took every single aspect of the old game, painted it with the UE brush, and called it a day
I didn't want or need heavy modernization with overlays on overlays, an in-game shop, endless yellow paint markers, and a hero who constantly monologues about what he should do next. What I got instead was every frustrating quirk of a 25-year-old game combined with the performance demands of yet another unoptimized UE abandonware title. Let me be frank: It's not fun spending ages trying to find an NPC based on a vague description (with no idea what time of day they'll actually be there), then running seven minutes to the nearest safe bed—because god forbid you try to sleep in an NPC's bed. Everyone in a five-mile radius wakes up, draws their weapon, and knocks you out

this game feels old in every possible way except the price tag. the graphics are technically modern but somehow still look like they took an old game, cranked the resolution up and set sharpness to 200%. everything looks weirdly overdone without actually looking impressive. and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ the performance is awful. i put the game on max settings with frame generation and somehow it still felt like the screen, the game and my pc were all fighting each other at the same time. it doesn’t even feel like normal low fps, it just feels wrong. like the image is moving but your eyes are telling you something is ♥♥♥♥♥♥. so i dropped it from ultra to high thinking alright, surely this fixes it. nope. it still felt like i needed frame gen just to make the game feel normal, which is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ridiculous. if i need fake frames on high settings just to stop the game from feeling like it’s having an argument with my monitor then something has gone horribly wrong. combat is probably the other big problem. your weapons feel slow as ♥♥♥♥ while enemies move like they’re playing on 2x speed. every fight feels like you’re trying to swing a medieval refrigerator while some random creature is already on its third attack. the controls are also awful. everything feels awkward, delayed and unnecessarily weird. i genuinely never thought i’d say this but souls games making you hold circle to sprint somehow feels like genius game design compared to this. and yes, the game does have manual saving. the problem is that it still expects you to babysit that save button like it’s 2002. forget to save for a bit and congratulations, you’re replaying the last chunk of your life because apparently autosaving regularly would ruin the authentic gothic experience. that’s really my biggest problem with the whole thing. i understand wanting to stay faithful to the original, but there’s a difference between preserving what made an old game special and preserving every annoying design decision that should’ve stayed in the past. this is a remake. modernize the parts that aged badly. i don’t need everything turned into some generic modern action rpg, but i also shouldn’t be sitting there wondering why a game released in 2026 feels like i found it in a dusty ps2 case at the back of a closet.

maybe longtime gothic fans will love how faithful it feels. personally i wanted a remake, not an archaeological excavation running on frame generation.

5800X3D, 3070. Game barely runs. Not worth the money. UE5 is crap and this game suffers because of it. Come back in half a year when it is cheaper and hopefully fixed.
Wem will ich mich anschließen?
