Reviews
Disappointingly shallow and unpolished. Important mechanics one would expect in the base game are locked behind DLCs, while basic QoL features for this genre such as queuing research, queuing moves, renaming planets from the planet screen, and right clicking to cancel constructions are missing. These and many, many more small irritating oversights pile up to make playing this game an unsatisfying slog.

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,400 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

Buy GalCiv 3, this one is a mess. I find it very messy. The UI is all wrong, the mechanics all twisted. The new gameplay is disengaging, boring, the sectors (yes, they can be switched off) are nonsense imho- they make trade impossible until much later in the game. Policies seem to be worthless, tons of OP ships around which can't be dealt with until late, cluttered map. I found nothing that I like, honestly. Citizen management is also confusing, there's lack of cause-effect data. Research is divided into 3 screens, which doesn't help at all, and I'm forced to always switch to tree, but then I have to navigate different subtrees, instead of one clear picture for all tech. The ship upgrades are quite limited and mystery now, i.e. how did I get from researching some planet stuff to upgrading my ship movement, though I could choose more HP??? Nonsense. Galciv 3 is great, 2 even better, but 3 was a major step forward, now 4 is 3 steps back.
This game is extremely bland, even mediocre in its design. I’m not sure I’ll put more hours into it, as my playtime is valuable. Perhaps a major overhaul through modding the data could improve it, though. That said, if you’re looking for a simple, no-brainer push-piece kind of game, very conventional, it might be fine for some light, undemanding sessions. But expect, regardless of the race you choose, to deal with the same very standard and predictable tech tree (for example, weapons: you get 3 types, and each tech just upgrades one type by one level up to about level 12—nothing more, nothing less, zero originality or variety. And there are plenty of examples like that, really the whole game is designed this way). The 3D graphics are good; the 2D ones, not so much (everything looks the same, and you could swap the starport icon with the clinic one—if you’ve never played the game, I challenge you to identify any recognizable elements!). The design, as I said, is mediocre and formulaic. The AI is very average. Many minor irritating bugs, perhaps some regression ones as well, as it is baffling that commonly found and reported bugs are not fixed at this stage of development. For comparison, and to show the standards by which I judge the game, here are the sci-fi titles I’ve played: Space Empires III–V, Distant Worlds I and II, Stellaris, Aurora, EFS, Stars!, and plenty of others I’ve forgotten (including, of course, MOO I and II). PS: 75% of my gaming time is letting run GC4 in suspended mode in an alternate virtual desktop while I do something else.
I played the original years ago. I saw an ad and thought I would check it out. It has been years since I played the original. To me, it is the same game with an updated interface . It is almost like the they used some of the original scripts. And like the original the repeat over and over to monotony. Same issue with relations with other races. No matter how hard you try to use diplomacy they are going to attack you. The worst part of all Is the game will not use the computer resources to speed up. The time delay between moves can be agonizing as the game progresses. Since I am playing on an Alien ware X17R2 with a 3070 graphics and 32g of Ram I am pretty sure it is not the computer. Even though you can play a bigger universe and more races , you really can't unless you are reading a book while you wait for the game to cycle. I actually have the original game and thought of loading it to check it out. It is pretty much the same and I don't recall it being so slow. I don't remember all the mechanics of the original but in this version if you have a ship yard you must build be building something constantly. Same with the planets. You can turn the planets over to the AI, but then you stil have to monitor what they do or they will mess it up for you. I can live with most of it but the S L O WWWWWW times the longer you play just really kills the deal for me. Maybe it is me but I found it more of the same and after all these years pretty disappointing.
It's good for the nostalgia factor, if you played the old games, this one is pretty much exactly the same. It's easy to jump back into, but not very deep and satisfying overall. After 100 hours it just made me want to play Stellaris. The best feature by far is the AI assisted faction creation. You just type a quick sentence describing your made up civilization, and the AI picks the traits, comes up with a play style, and writes a script to role play when you interact with them.
i would reccomend the high seas for anything stardock related
Not a lot of fun, Gal Civ III was better. The different civs feel almost identical to each other.
