Really enjoyed the visuals and the story. A little short, get it on sale.
For whatever reason I thought this was a VR game when I bought it. That was my fault. But I like to support small devs so figured I would give this a shot regardless. I've only played maybe one first person game on a flat screen in the past ten years, so it could just be that, but the controls in this felt very.. off. I used a dual shock style controller. For some reason you can't re-bind the buttons. And the default config never clicked for me throughout my playthrough. It didn't help that there seemed to be way more buttons than even necessary for a game that consists of walking and talking. All in all, Firewatch just feels janky. It doesn't help that the world is absolutely full of invisible walls. These walls funnel you through the extremely linear path that you're supposed to take. I understand why they did that, but you get hung on on all kinds of invisible objects at every turn. I've gotten stuck on rocks, trees and at a few points started floating backwards. And this leads to why I'm not recommending this. There really is no actual game here. You have zero choices to make in regards to anything. Sure there are some dialog picks but they have no real effect on anything. Maybe they mention the type of dog you owned or something but it's all meaningless. You have no problems to solve, no real directions to choose, nothing meaningful to collect (maybe there's an achievement for picking up books?).. this really could have been an animated short. You could watch someone else play through this on youtube and get the exact same experience. Actually that would be better since you wouldn't be the one getting frustrated. All you do is walk the path, which triggers story elements, which are almost entirely sound bytes. Occasionally you have to press A to do an animation to get over a log or something. That's it, that's the "game". Another reviewer mentioned how misunderstood the writing is in regards to dementia and I couldn't agree more. I don't want to spoil the plot or get personal in a game review but I'll just say I didn't really appreciate some of it. I wanted to love this. The voice acting is superb! The visuals are nice. The story builds up ok but eventually falls flat. And that's it. There was exactly one moment where I got a little excited but then I remembered there was no reason to actually run because I knew nothing would actually happen if I didn't. Nothing ever happens in Firewatch until you trigger the next bit of the story. But maybe, just maybe, that's what you're after.
