About

Expeditions: Samurai is an expansive roleplaying game set in our world during real historical events, with an intricate, branching story and a vibrant cast of characters. At every turn, you will be faced with life-or-death choices that will challenge your resolve.
Create the character you want to be and choose your own path through history. Even the smallest of your decisions can have far-reaching consequences for yourself, your crew, and - in many cases - the people of Japan.

In the year 1600, the navigator William Adams arrived in Japan. He would soon become the first European granted the title of "Samurai".
In Expeditions: Samurai, William Adams never leaves England; you will beat Adams to the punch and sail to Japan aboard the Dutch frigate De Albatros.
You arrive in Japan as the newly elected leader of a motley crew of privateers and are quickly swept up in an ongoing civil war that is nearing its climax. Navigate the politics, intrigue, and drama of feudal Japan as you and your crew catch the attention of powerful warlords whose struggle will determine the future of the nation.

Every crewmate has their own story to uncover - if you manage to earn their trust. Build your relationship with each companion into a meaningful friendship, a lifelong rivalry, or possibly even a new love.

Outnumbered but never outgunned, engage your enemies on your own terms in a fast and freeing turn-based combat system where movement, attacks, and interruptions can all play out simultaneously.
Use stealth and clever gadgets to toy with your opponents. Split up your team to position them in real-time and set up devastating ambushes. Utilize a vast array of weapons and abilities to maintain the upper hand - from mainstays of the pirate arsenal to iconic Japanese weapons.
Craft your own items and experiment with different loadouts to survive deadly and diverse enemies.

For the first time ever in an Expeditions game, experience the tense combat and deeply branching narrative of Expeditions: Samurai in drop-in/drop-out co-op. Play in single-player as your own Captain Flynn, or invite your friend and play as a pair of twins.
In co-op, talking to characters at the same time lets you wrestle for control of important decisions or compete for a companion's affections. Coordinate sneak attacks or clever combat maneuvers; throw a distracting firecracker at just the right time to let your partner sneak past a sentry, or execute a flawlessly timed double stealth takedown.
Only buy the Early Access if you are passionate about supporting the studio
Alright, so I really really loved Rome. 3 playthroughs, even at max difficulty, and this game has the spirit and core of Rome within it. I think releasing this game into early access was an astronomical mistake, because the game releases in march 2027 and there is tons of polish left, but the core of the game is ready to go, and if you've played Rome you see where the polish will come. 19 hours, no crashes. (awesome! but there are definitely some UI bugs) I'm going to avoid critiquing the UI because they say its WIP, but it desperately needs help. The styling of the UI is amazing, but actually using the UI is a constant battle. There is a lot of circulating community feedback at the moment so if they follow through on the community suggestions and their likely internal upgrades planned, the UI will be flawlessly clean to use. I think the controller support for UI at the moment is getting in the way of the MnK UI usage. The UI styling itself is very good, but missing lots of quick and easy ways to able to learn what words mean. There are a healthy variety of weapon traits and weapon rolls already, and their grouped traits make sense compared to the more random chaos of Rome. Great improvement that seems to be based on community feedback. My main gripe is honestly with the Class, Attribute, Traits, and Skills system. If you've played Rome you can forget everything you know when it comes to building characters. Class Your class skill tree should be fully visible at the start as its rather small (compensated by skill system) This acts more as a foundation to build your character around, rather than the defining pillar Attribute This is a system that feels like it might catch most players off guard. It functions like a DnD/BG3 Attribute system of Strength, Wisdom, Charisma, etc. Here it is only 4 categories, and the points are fixed after character creation, with no way to change them outside of unique items buffing those attributes points. This is fine at a design level, but the game does not do a very good job telling you this decision is so final. Traits The trait system is an absolute min-max game, these are 12 traits that allow characters to do certain actions. Unfortunately, the player is heavily restricted because the only options that make sense for yourself (MC) to pick are the dialogue ones, however you have tons of flexibility with your companions to choose how you want to spec them. The reason i say the dialogue ones only make sense for the MC is because only the MC can start dialogue with other people in the world, this leads to you being heavily rewarded for focusing your dialogue traits. This does not force your character into a support role in combat by any means, only combat skill it nerfs is the points available for surprise attacks, but there are 2-3 companions that are all already greatly suited to be able to be spec'd into surprise attacks because of their traits/perks. Skills This is where the new system honestly shines, you can transform any character into any sort of vision you have for them? stealthy tanks? very possible. You can equip anyone with just about any perks, the only real restriction to the design growth is that many skills are locked behind certain Trait thresholds. However even though the MC is pushed towards dialogue skill tree. There are some very nice combat perks that aren't just support perks within the skill tree, locked behind these dialogue perks. There is no easy way currently to see what Trait upgrades would unlock what skills without navigating the skill "tree" the skill tree is also definitely not a tree as all skills are unlocked based on traits and main level, very very few are unlocked based on having to have one of the previous skills. Something that shows what your Trait upgrades will unlock for skills would be very useful though. All in all its a system that is honestly beautifully designed, but severely hindered by its UI decisions, so if they improve the UI explanations, it will genuinely be so much more approachable. I think I have 2 hours just piecing together the skills to traits to plan builds in the future. So please, dont buy this game, go play expeditions Rome, and come play this when it releases. As for the "woke" and "artstyle" comments. I didn't feel the "wokeness" or "whitewashing" the historical basis for the character and all the other europeans in japan genuinely exists and expedition games are always about coming to a new land. Sure your character can be gay or bi in romance choices, but it doesn't force it down your throat just leaves the door open, and some companions will reject your advances and others wont, bravo realistic, nothing fancy there and certainly no jarring dinner conversations of "im non-binary" or the like. The artstyle certainly isn't Rome's, but it can certainly helps with performance if the team is constrained by budget and can't afford the time it takes to optimize insanely high resolution textures and models. Honestly with how high-poly the rest of the world appears, I think genuinely the artstyle wouldn't be so complained about if they made the characters had a few more polygons in their heads. The devs sadly took horrible screenshots for the preview posts and don't express the full range of emotions expressed by the characters in dialogue.

Unhappy because I've completed the early access. Happy because I've really been enjoying it so far. This is my first time playing an of the expedition series. I'm enjoy the story, enjoying the fights, enjoying all of it. The only bug I encountered was a companion falling through to under a building during a fight and having to reload afterwards as they were trapped when the battle happened. This only occured once. I'm looking forward to the full release and have bought the other expedition games to try.
My honest opinion 7.8/10 (great so far!) Story, combat, and movement Story: Great story telling especially “choice matters” dialogue to improve relationships plus knowing point you add in your skill matter! The only thing I found interesting and confusing was side characters have those options also. Not sure why when for me they can’t be use to chat with NPC vendor for better price or service.7/10 Combat: good especially knowing there is permanent death option making combat and strategy important. I haven’t made it far into the game but looking forward to more combat.9/10 Movement- Movement in the game is great aside from jumping aspect I found myself in combat knowing I could jump/climb over a wall but did not found any button or feature that allow me to do so (I could be not looking more closely) but overall great! 10/10 Great game looking forward to playing more!!
Bon courage!
Disregard the "Girlboss" ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ everyone is spamming about, the following are what needs to be fixed while on EA: * Racial Diversity: from the Character Creation's available skin color schemes, it seems the following races are Northern/European, Southern/African and Middle/Spanish. Yet in one of the early dialouges in the Kurokawa village, it seems you're default an Englishman, at least if the "Flynn" character is default in Netherlands, have some kind of half - ancestry something in the dialouge so it made-sense. * Remove the weird Modern humour, the "Dad" joke doesn't quite fit that one scene, but it might just be my personal preference, humour is great in Rome, here at Samurai, it was a bit weird-ish. * I don't know if it just me but there's some kind of weird film-grain, that it sometimes appear to blurry visually, I had my settings on Ultra/High mix and have a consistent 60 FPS but there's like a grainy filter. All in all, it was a great experience. Oh balance the combat too, Skill Efficiency to damage is OP.
I really loved the game until now. This being Early Access there were a bunch of small things that I would love to see improve though. But nothing major. I also played solo, might check out the co-op mode when the game comes out in 1.0. I also expected a more combat heavy game but it seems like their is quite a lot of exploring and dialogue as well. Not that I’m complaining, the story seems good for now. The game already looks and sounds good. I was surprised to see all the dialogue already voice acted.
What I liked
- Combat: For now the combat has been simple enough. But it looks like it can get quite deep. I like that the different classes have vastly different systems for their special abilities. - Story: I like the story so far. It has some real tough choices with some actual consequences. It will be fun to run through it a second time and see what is different. - Voice Acting: Thank god. Finally a game I play that takes voice acting seriously in making at least an effort in making the voices sound local. I have been playing too many games recently that don’t care about this at all. It’s refreshing to play a game where not everyone has a british/american accent. The Dutch accents/names in this game are on point. That’s more than what Amsterdam 1666 can say. Traditional Japanise Art: I love the traditional japanese art pieces for the main menu and some other part of the game. Reality sets the time period and setting. - Doesn’t take itself too seriously: The first thing I noticed when playing the game is that most of the tooltips in the options menu have little jokes. I love it when a game doesn’t take itself too serious and just has fun with things.
What I didn’t like
- Froze after game over: I wanted to see what would happen if I came out in the hostage situation on the deck during the start of the game. It resulted in a game over. But when I wanted to load the last save the game froze. It worked again after I closed the game. This was the only time the game froze though, have not had any issues with that again. The game seems pretty stable. - Stealth area unclear: I accidently walked into a protected area in the game. I was expecting to get stopped by the guards but it just immediately went to combat. It would be nice to clarify this. - No Settings during Dialogue: I wanted to close the game or at least lower the volume during dialogue but there is no way to open the menu until I was out of dialogue again. - Starting Text: The text at the start of the game went too fast for me. I wish I would just be able to click to continue it. - Water texture: The water doesn’t look great in the opening part of the game. Hopefully they can improve it. - Closing windows with the same button you open it: I was missing this option for the link menu, which you use to split up your characters. If I open it with G I also expect to be able to close it with G. - Quick save indicator: I was missing an indicator that I quick saved.
This is a promising Expeditions game, but it needs work. If you liked the expeditions series then you should be happy that the continuity devs at Campfire Cabal have rescued it from the cluster NFT that was the explosion of the old studio. However the game is clearly lower budget than Rome was, with stylised graphics trying to cover up the difference and some rough edges in terms of UI and mechanics. It's currently very cheap on sale for what will be a 40 hour + good Expeditions RPG, so if you are a fan of the series you could preorder it now and wait for launch and you probably won't be disappointed. It's what I did with BG3!
Very interesting premise and setting where the PC is thrown into the unknown and must adapt. This provides a great setting for the player to experience everything at the same time. The game-play so far is a mix of CRPG (Expeditions: Viking/Expeditions: Rome) and Shadow Tactics and it seems to work really well because it provides more options to handle situations and not just pure combat. I am looking forward to the full release of the game The good: -Setting and story -Classes/skills and loot, seems to have cool synergy for interesting builds Companions are interesting and varied The bad: -Encountered many bugs but so far no game breaking bugs -Skills need to be used by the controlled character. For example if one companion has lock pick then I need to select that character to use the skill. It would be great if when I click a chest or door the right character would use the skill automatically -Seem to get extreme lag when opening doors
I'm leaving this a positive review because, having played the previous three installments several times and seeing the bones of something comparable here, I really do think this will ultimately be another great installment in the series. Time at review is about how long it took me to finish the Act 1 content currently available at time of review, though I did rush some things so if you take your time you will likely get more out of it, albeit not much. The dialogue is a bit clunky, the UI needs polishing, and there need to be more customization options for characters. Voice acting and writing is decent. The stealth system shows promise but there need to be some pretty big tweaks and nerfs to ranged weapons in this mode. Having said all of that, the devs (as of review time) have gone out of their way to address these complaints raised by others and have already made progress in fixing some of them. These are all things that can and are being improved in early access. If you're going to get it during the EA period, I would recommend you get it on sale and wait until very close to full release to risk the full price.
