Endless Sky is a 2D space trading and combat game inspired by the classic Escape Velocity series. Work your way up from a relatively wimpy shuttle, cargo ship, or fighter, to a highly upgraded and customized flagship or to a massive fleet of warships or freighters.
Revenue comes from in-game items and microtransactions, which our price-based model doesn't estimate. The player count below is how many people own it, not what they spent.

About

Endless Sky is a 2D space trading and combat game inspired by the classic Escape Velocity series. Work your way up from a relatively wimpy shuttle, cargo ship, or fighter, to a highly upgraded and customized flagship. Grow your fleet while exploring an expansive galaxy with hundreds of systems. Earn money by carrying passengers or cargo, escorting convoys, bounty hunting, mining asteroids, or plundering and capturing enemy ships.

Enter the 31st century and choose from one of multiple starting locations and backgrounds where you set out on your own journey as the captain of a new ship. Take sides in a civil war, or ignore the story line and just enjoy exploring the galaxy at your own pace. The main story line alone takes about 8-16 hours to play through, with over a hundred hours worth of story content spread across the galaxy in the form of other story lines both big and small.

The game's content can be added to using the plugin system, which allows anyone with a text editor and a paint program to create new ships, weapons, missions, and more to the game. All of the game's content is built using the same system, so anything you see in the vanilla game can be done in a plugin. The capabilities of plugins are fully documented on our GitHub wiki.

Endless Sky is free, open source, and cross platform (Windows, Mac, and Linux). The game has been developed for over 10 years as a labor of love from hundreds of volunteer contributors. Updates occur regularly with three major updates every year. Over time, the game will continue to expand as contributors add new missions, story lines, alien species, places to explore, sound effects, artwork, gameplay mechanics, quality-of-life improvements, and more.

I have returned to this beautifully simple, yet intricate game, many times since... 2009, Holy Guacamole Batman! funny how it wasnt always on steam!!!
this game is just a fun way to kill time. You start with a small ship and can build to a huge fleet able to take over the worlds as you go. there are hidden areas that you can access, I will spill that you need to capture jump drives for you ships from one of the hidden races !!!! Have fun finding everything

as good as the game is, the mission to go back to Earth with the Eye of Horus is currently impossible since it gets instakilled the second I enter space
This is worth checking out for yourself as it is free, but bear in mind you're really getting a *free* single player game, and it is what it is. As it stands, the game is largely focused on merchant gameplay, with combat existing mostly as a threat to that gameplay rather than a viable avenue for it; While you have to maneuver and aim your ship, which becomes more and more difficult the larger your ships gets, enemies have auto-aim precision and maneuverability and they fly circles around you, and even in a heavy warship you will be relatively eaten up in a short amount of time by even a couple of ships. So, in sticks with the merchant gameplay, you're most balancing a small 'daily' payment against the revenue you bring in, something that will be relatively unimportant once you realize "rush deliveries" give you a ridiculously large payout with pretty much no downside. Yes, you have to 'get to the planet by a certain date', but really there's not much point to lingering between point A and B to begin with; You land at a planet every once in a while to refuel your ship, and even if you forget to do this in a system with no planets, there's almost always a friendly ship nearby to refuel you. So, at the end of the day, this is you click on systems, waiting for your ship to jump, land on planet, collect payment, find next efficient combination of jobs, rinse and repeat. There's nothing more for your to do than grind money to get a "better ship", but this is simply relative, as you'll get a larger ship with more cargo space and better defenses, but it will be slower and, while you'll make more money for each job since you have more space, it will just make you want to tear your hair out. This is a fun idea, there's just no substance once your figure out the gameplay loop.
Utterly unique and technically retro space combat exploration and resource management simulator. Explore the galaxy and finance a fleet of starships outfiting them with the finest equipment from the best outfitters you can find. Take sides in interstellar politics and use your influence to shape the economy and galaxy at large. The graphics and gameplay aren't for everyone, but the world-building and space-trucking are immaculate for this long lived and honoured title.
For a free game this is great.
Cool concept, fun gameplay. Me Likey.
Early game is a little tedious but it gets very fun. :)
