i have to say i absolutely loved this game on the switch, but i love it even more here. this game is like if Touhou and Thunder Force had a kid. this game also helps me pass time. music is awesome, especially in ignition mode. love the game, love the music, love the art and graphics. i highly recommend.

A love letter to horizontal shmups, especially Thunder Force V. It even has the composer from that game doing the music! This game is very difficult, sometimes absurdly so, but it's a whole lot of fun. This can be considered a positive or negative, but bosses can be Gunvolt-y in their design in that you will have to memorize STRINGS of attacks and navigate them perfectly if you want to survive.
I wanted to like this game. In the end it is just an average game. I think the biggest issue is the power ups for your weapons they are just plain and leave you wishing for more. The game really is not impressive in any way.
*Disclosure - I'm completely ignorant about the developer/publisher fiasco regarding the designers/composers not getting properly compensated for their work on the title, baring what little I've read here in reviews. This won't be covering that whatsoever.* Thunder-Force IV is my favorite side-scrolling/shump game of all time. It's an absolute masterpiece with some of the best gameplay, enemy design and *mind-blowing soundtrack* you'll ever experience. If you haven't played that game, or the franchise in general, what are you doing here?! GO PLAY IT NOW. While Devil Engine doesn't emulate this to perfection, it gets pretty damn close. This game is tough as NAILS but it's a labor of love, at least for me anyway. You'll slowly improve overtime, combat your shortcomings and see real progress. I've shelved it for a while but I'll be coming back and giving it another go. Also, apparently the team is working on an expansion?! Put it in my veins. --- Graphics - 9/10 (Absolutely gorgeous visual presentation. A modern take on the Thunder/Lightning Force series.) Gameplay - 9/10 (It's tough as nails but almost perfectly encapsulates what makes these games incredible, and again, if the central theme here hasn't hit home yet, this is the best love-letter to Thunder/Lightning Force yet.) Soundtrack - BANGER/10 (The OST is absolutely incredible. If you know, you know.) Controls - 9/10 (Controls are precise. It will take some getting use to constantly managing your speed as resource while you pilot but thats part of the challenge of these games.) Story - Who Cares? Replay Value - High Overall - 9.5/10 Worth every single red cent, regardless of sale pricing or not. ESP. if you're a fan of the Thunder/Lightning Force series. It's amazing. Heres hoping to the expansion getting released soon!
Absolutely terrific. One of the first shmups I played and it's one of my all time favorite. - The presentation and music are top notch, and it's boss designs are something you'll never see in any other game, which is the game's biggest strength. - Every stage also have their own gimmick, and some of them are great while others can be quite infuriating (i ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hate the spotlights in stage 5 omg, at least in ignition it's more bearable because you can destroy them on the second half of the stage). - There are only three ships (one is DLC exclusive), but all of them play drastically different from one another and completely change how you approach the game. While I can appreciate that aspect, I personally don't like it that much because if you wanna play another ship, you'll need to learn it's mechanics and completely change how you route the game. (i'll admit it's a skill issue on my part) - This game is hard. VERY HARD. Devil Engine doesn't pull any punches, and if you want to beat it, you'll have to gitgud. (literally) Also, gotta mention that while the store page has the "Bullet Hell" tag and the game may look like one, Devil Engine is not a bullet hell and it doesn't play like one. Yes, there are lots of bullets, but if you try to play Devil Engine like it's Mushihimesama or Touhou, you're not going to win no matter what. Your hurtbox isn't smaller than it looks because it's size is literally what you see on the screen. Every ship also has it's own defensive mechanic and it's completely up to you to decide how you utilize it. One last thing I wanted to say is: Give it a chance. And if you didn't like it, it's okay because it's going to take a lot of practice. And once it clicks, the game will become a lot more enjoyable/bearable. (i didn't like it either when i first started playing 3 years ago)
looking interesting but i cannot get into the core gameplay. You seem to need to know everything in advance seemingly. Also slight rip off of Thunderforce and Last Resort.
Nice shmup with some Akira / Last Resort influences but it would have been nice to have an " infinite credits " mode for thoses who just want to chill & enjoy the graphics / atmosphere while playing the game.
