Great concept, shallow execution

6,5/10

Introduction
Democracy 4 has a fascinating premise: it hands you the keys to a nation and lets you manage budgets, laws, and crises. Your first playthrough is really enjoyable, and the intuitive interface makes it easy to take full control right from the start. However, the game definitely hits a wall in the long run.
PROS

Clean, intuitive UI: Managing dozens of overlapping data points never feels overwhelming or cluttered.
Incredible freedom: You can shape your country how you want thanks to a good amount of options.

CONS

Way too predictable: The consequences of your actions feel purely mathematical and linear. It completely lacks the chaos, friction, and sheer unpredictability of real-world politics.
Unrealistic economics: The game hits you with a hard, artificial ceiling on economic growth. In long-term campaigns, trying to outgrow your debt-to-GDP ratio is impossible. Instead, the game forces you into a corner where your only choices are making savage spending cuts or absolutely tax-murdering your citizens. Because of this, massive real-world investments like R&D, tech, and free trade feel completely pointless in long-run playthroughs.

FINAL THOUGHTS & EVALUATION
It’s a perfect ideological sandbox if you just want to see what happens when you implement radical, real-world theories, but don't go into this expecting a hyper-accurate macroeconomic simulator. Highly recommended if you just want to mess around for a couple of runs, but I'd definitely grab it on sale and skip any expectations of deep, long-term campaigns.

Unfortunately, I cannot recommend Democracy 4, at least not at full price. You could grab it in a sale for €5, though. The gameplay is simple: increase your GDP → the country keeps getting better. The gameplay loop ends after one session (which you can finish in 2–4 hours), and the core mechanics stay the same throughout. There are hardly any narrative elements, which is fine in principle, but the events are repetitive. Personally, after one round, I had no interest in playing another session because the content simply doesn’t offer more. There’s no real depth; it’s extremely simple. Anyone hoping to tackle complex legislation, roleplay diplomatically, or conquer the world militarily is completely out of place here.
Don't buy it.At the end of the game you will find that there is a cap on GDP,which is very funny and ridiculous
no matter what my intent going into the game it will end up being a utopian socialist nation with a base on mars and free bottom surgery.
Played France. Damn socialists control everything. No private economy. Still losing money. Started by cutting everything i could find. Ended up losing the election first three times. Decided this time to remove all limits on tobacco consumption while doing everything else the same. Won election by a landslide. 10/10 realistic French experience.
kinda frustraiting and uneventful af. I don't see any depth about the systems this game has to offer. Simulation and sandbox games are known to have weak lategame - this title, I would say, doesn't have even mid-game. The main issue as I see is that Democracy handles theme of politics in unserious way. I would see an appeal in this being spreadsheet-type simulator, but setting just doesn't do justice to the theme of politics. There are political compass, world-leader quoutes, but gameplay and genre does the opposite of telling any particular message of power dynamics or economics (or maybe just does it in a very absurd way, I dunno what is worse). It would be good feeling like hell yeah you made a goverment of you dream or just anything funny, but game doesn't reward you at all with that and any kind of emotional impact. And I try to see it through 'clicker' game optics - game just lacks any type of content and progression And the worst about all this - when game definetely at its best as 'spreadsheet' simulator - balance just completely sucks ass and doesn't make much sense. OFC you can make it harder yourself, but I don't understand where you can fiund beauty instead of simply torturing yourself with bland cognitive exercise. Also no decent statistical and informational tools to see what you've actually done to brag about your progress. The closes thing to this project is online pop-psychological test most of people were completing when they were teen - like 'Who are you from Avengers' or 'What kind of politic you are'. Basically you know what each answer gives points to and you just try to achieve this goal i dunno i frustated af 3.5/10
Yes. I do want to carbon tax Canada for 100% while doing everything in my power to get Canadians to use more carbon. These spaceprograms and secret police aren't going to pay for themselves
>economy in shambles >global recession >cut taxes >increase productivity >gdp growing >unemployment down >lost in biggest US landslide ever because i cut welfare
