About
Chaos Warrior is a retro JRPG inspired by the NES era. Fight deadly monsters, explore dangerous locations, and gain the strength to become the hero that saves the world!
100 years ago, the Chaos Lord emerged and wrought death and destruction to all. A band of heroes rose and defeated the Chaos Lord, banishing him from this world with a magic crystal. Now the Chaos Lord has returned and it falls to you to defeat him once again. Finn, a young Knight of the Kingdom of Efenia, is tasked with collecting the Crests from each of the 3 Kingdoms in order to unlock the power to defeat the Chaos Lord.
Engage in traditional JRPG turn based combat as you explore the world, gaining levels, abilities, weapons, and armor in order to fight stronger monsters as you journey further in your quest. Along the way you'll meet new allies with unique abilities both in and out of combat and find optional side quests and dungeons.

Chaos Warrior is basically Dragon Quest with modern QoL like saving anywhere in town or the world map, auto-battle, better visibility on what equipment does, and very snappy menus and controls. Like Dragon Quest, it's grindy compared to other modern retro inspired RPG's, but the combat flows much faster and you have a good amount of options. There's also a good world map (in the menu, not available via a dedicated button), and a main quest guide that helps point you into the next main goal. There's no quest log like the classics for sidequests, so you will have to keep them in you memory. Combat has a number of options and skills, debuffs are really punishing when used against you, making Hero's Rings and other immunity items just among the best options to have unless you have a way to work around it. This is unfortunate as most of your accessories just can't be used because charm, blind, silence, and other debuffs are used very often. Since there's only a single accessory slot you're pretty much forced to use those immunity accessories through most of the bosses. Graphically it looks NES+, very similar to the NES classics but it doesn't seem to be limited to the NES's color restrictions. Sound and music are very solid, definitely NES feeling for the nostalgia. I ran it on a Linux desktop, and it didn't have SteamPlay set by default (and is a Windows game), I had to manually switch it to use Proton. Once I did so it ran fine. There are a few bugs though, some options don't stick between runs of the game, once all my options were reset but most of the time it was only the Full Screen option that was disabled. The other issue I had is the thief Wren's X-Cut ability would not function with memory cursor. All his other abilities worked with memory cursor, but when I last use X-Cut, the cursor is placed somewhere not visible and you just get an "unable to use" buzz. I had to move the D-pad to get the cursor to reappear and then manually select it again. No other character had any memory cursor bugs that I saw, and Wren's X-Cut is not learned until rather late in the game. 100% aside from the bonus dungeon took a bit over 9 hours, so it doesn't overstay its welcome. Overall a solid game outside of a few minor easily worked around bugs.

Pretty decent, a bit hard at the very end. Overall, an open love-letter and modern clone of early Dragon Warrior (1-4) and Final Fantasy games. Lots of subtle references. Overall solid, took around 12 hours for mastery.
It's a nice, fun little JRPG. Old school so if you don't like needing to grind a bit for gold and exp it might not be for you, but if you like older JRPGs - NES or SNES era - this one is definitely worth five dollars.
Doing my 99 grind then finished with it, excellent game. Would recommend trying it out if you enjoyed nes era jrpgs.
Don't know what's wrong with this game, but it sucked me in and didn't let go. Thank you for such a nostalgic pleasent journey with FF, DQ and PS vibe. I really enjoyed it and looking forward for new projects from you!
Solid, simple, retro JRPG with good quality of life features. You won't find anything very original here, but it's all done well. Definitely worth the asking price.
I did not play classic JRPGs like Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest growing up, so I do not have a nostalgic tie to the games that Chaos Warrior is an homage to. All that preamble to say that I really enjoyed this game purely on its own merits, although I will caveat that I am friends with the developer and so that will naturally introduce a little bias into my opinion (although if I didn't like the game I would have just not reviewed it). Its key appeal is in its charm - a throwback to simpler RPGs, NPCs and a world with JUST ENOUGH personality to give you something to connect to, and gameplay that isn't super sweaty about meticulous balance. It's not particularly deep and you don't have a ton of control over building your party (level ups increase stats automatically, for example) but the game's length ensures it stays entertaining and concludes before it starts to get old. There's plenty to explore and lots of powerful items to find, and the main quest is very easy to follow so it escapes that clunky inaccessibility that classic games often present to new or returning players and maintains solid momentum throughout. I cleared just about all the content in the game, and my final save clocked in around 12 hours, which included some idle time in menus and the like, and I was fairly overleveled and very powerful by the time I beat the final boss. For $5 it's a really hard bargain to top, so even if it turns out to be, say a 7/10 game for you personally, I think it's worth kicking the tires and I think there will be very few people who are interested in this game that aren't won over by it.
Perfectly fine short little jrpg, inspired by my estimation from DQ2/FF1/Lufia 2 and probably others. Not unique in any way, functionally doesn't have a story, has a few interesting ideas mechanically but overall doesn't do quite enough with them. Like Lufia 2, 90% of the game is spent in dungeons, which to be clear are not at all as good as Lufia 2. That being said maybe cause it's a random indie game I bought for $5 and not a game that was hyped up to me for years as "contender for the best snes rpg" so I came out of this feeling pretty similar to Lufia 2: really liked the monster sprites, had some interesting ideas, but overall mostly fine but forgettable. It doesn't overstay it's welcome, it's cheap, it's fairly fun, and you'd be supporting (as far as I can tell) a dev's first commercial release so if it seems interesting you might as well check it out yourself.
Great stuff! Exactly what you expect (in the positive sense).
Great and very fun game. Thanks for making it guys! If you like dragon warrior and early final fantasy this is a game you really should buy
