About
Chaos Warrior is a retro JRPG inspired by the NES era. Fight deadly monsters, explore dangerous locations, and gain the strength to become the hero that saves the world!
100 years ago, the Chaos Lord emerged and wrought death and destruction to all. A band of heroes rose and defeated the Chaos Lord, banishing him from this world with a magic crystal. Now the Chaos Lord has returned and it falls to you to defeat him once again. Finn, a young Knight of the Kingdom of Efenia, is tasked with collecting the Crests from each of the 3 Kingdoms in order to unlock the power to defeat the Chaos Lord.
Engage in traditional JRPG turn based combat as you explore the world, gaining levels, abilities, weapons, and armor in order to fight stronger monsters as you journey further in your quest. Along the way you'll meet new allies with unique abilities both in and out of combat and find optional side quests and dungeons.

This was an easy buy at $5. It's cheaper than a cup of coffee. I've not played long but I wanted to share my thoughts. Right out of the gate it wears its influence on its sleeve. This is very obviously a Dragon Warrior-esque game, which is great. Combat is fast and clean with an Auto attack feature. If you rummage around the opening castle you'll find a warp flute which is handy. Staying at an inn is faster than Dragon Quest 1, which I appreciate. What isn't great: The font. It's really bad. An "L" looks like a number 1. The music is very tinny which can be grating, but once turned down isn't that bad. All in all, so far, I'm glad I took a "risk" and bought the game, because it's cheaper than coffee.
Great game. The developer of this game is a pretty prolific map designer in the classic Doom scene, but I was looking at this game on its own terms. It's pretty good for those that want a simple adventure akin to the early DQ games, but there is actual main character interaction and dialogue, which is quite funny and cute. Only gripes are minor stuff that could be QOL adds in the future, so if anyone wants to play a cute simple RPG, grab it.

Super fun retro JRPG. Has a lot of polish and a surprisingly decent amount of detail and QoL features. It's not quite as punishing as actual retro JRPGs - e.g. you lose half your gold when you get defeated, but you can go back to pick it up. There's also nothing stopping you just save scumming, as you can save any time outside of battle or dungeons. Music is very catchy and well done. Battles are simple but move at a nice pace - you can make the text logs during battle go slower or faster in the settings too. There's no character creation or class changing, but you recruit three other party members with their own pre-set class and special class 'command' they can use during battle, e.g. White Magic, or Thievery. The dev is also super responsive and helpful on the Steam forums. Honestly, for under 5 quid, it's a steal and you can't go wrong. Highly recommend if you like old-school JRPGs.
It's formulaic and perfunctory in the extreme, but for a matinee price you're getting a matinee experience, no less formulaic and perfunctory than the forgettable yet pleasant midsummer movies of yore. While there are quite a few I'd recommend ahead of this one, I also wouldn't warn anyone away from the title.
An ancient evil was sealed away by past heroes and it's been 100 years and now you have to defeat it! I'm here for it. Plays like original Dragon Warrior/Quest games 1-3 with some annoyances removed. A shared inventory. Saving anywhere in town or world map. If you wipe you drop your gold and can go get it instead of it being lost forever. A fast travel system. That kind of thing. No skill points. Your heroes get abilities at pre defined level ups. Grinding is at a minimum. I just actively tried to grind around the 3rd town and my levels skyrocketed from 10 to 14 in probably 10 to 15 minutes. For fun I tried to sequence break by going to a town way out of order and was rewarded with getting armor that made a character practically invincible for a couple of dungeons and going. As God intended. 10/10 No Steam Cloud as of this review. I play on multiple PCs so that's a huge drag.
What a fun game! Despite a few small bugs that cropped up, this is an accessible, engaging 8-bit style RPG that successfully captures so much of what's fun about classic Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. The visuals and music are great, the character interactions are fun, and the gameplay is snappy, and just deep enough to get you really hooked. I ended up doing a pretty low level run, and it made the whole experience tons of fun. I can't think of a better RPG you can get for five bucks. A must play for fans of 8-bit RPGs!
This should be studied by anyone interested in creating their own old school JRPG. Masterclass fundamentals.
I like this game, I have a bit more to go, but it's been great! Bite sized adventure segments, grind spots, town interactions. This game is respecting the ♥♥♥♥ out of my time and I'm grateful for that. It's exactly the kinda thing I've been looking for. A modern Dragon Quest classic. For the price, it's an absolute steal.
Really fun little RPG. Something you can definitely beat in a weekend if you have enough gumption for that kinda thing. If you enjoy classic Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, you're pretty much guaranteed to like this. While Chaos Warrior plays it very safe in terms of the plot and setting, there's enough spins on the formula (stat increase potions, the key system, etc.) and much-appreciated QOL features to make it a worthwhile purchase for anyone who likes NES RPGs. You can buy this game for the price of a decent coffee. Just do it!
A neat little throwback to the Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior) games on the NES - with a lot less of the archaic game design of the 1980s. For $5, it's honestly a steal.
