I love Cave Story. One of the best indie games of all time, no question. All made by one dude. Great level design, characters, story, and peak soundtrack. You'll definitely like it if Metroidvanias are your thing. Also solid platforming to be had. There’s also the original version you can get off their website for free. I personally prefer this Steam version as it just makes life easier, and I prefer the 3DS remastered soundtrack. This is a strong buy, but only do it when it's on sale.
major cave story update before halo infinite's story gets resolved

proibido ter uma historia numa caverna
I have no idea how many hours between the different versions of Cave Story I've played. Think it all started with the WiiWare version. Amazing game to come back to and play through over and over.
es literal UNO de los primeros indies en la historia de los videojuegos y tiene una historia y gameplay god, 101203012/10 una joya
Update: As of 12Apr2026 a new massive patch was teased. I played it using the beta password and after using SAM to re-lock the achievement it unlocked instantly upon my first kill. ---- Getting 100% was impossible without external software, but then a patch dropped, and now it's possible!!!!. approximate amount of time to 100%: 25+ hours (many more without guides and other help) Estimated achievement difficulty: 10/10 Minimum number of playthroughs needed: 3+ (likely more) Multiplayer achievements: No. Missable achievements: Yes!!! Multiple. Grinding Achievements: No. Tho you will repeat sections a lot. DLC-Only achievements: No. Time-gated achievements: Yes!!! 2 achievements for playing on specific dates (can change PC date) Speed-run achievements: Yes!!!. 14+ of the most difficult achievements are speed-run. RNG-achievements: No. Does difficulty affect achievements: Yes!!!! Easy, normal, and Hard (one hit KO) achievements. Unobtainable/glitched achievements: Maybe.. * Point of no return: Multiple stages but you can eventually return (up until the last stage). Is there a guide: The ones on steam by El Juancho and BC helped a bit tho incomplete. Most guides are incomplete due to multiple versions of the game. The wiki helps for endings and locations. First achievement unlock: 1 minute in once you get the first gun from the chest. Notes: * Difficulty is insane for the worst of the achievements and requires multiple finger grinding retries. * [strike]As of a 2025 patch an achievement has been broken and unobtainable. The only way to obtain it is with SAM. [/strike] On 12 April 2026 A patch was pushed that likely fixes this (Needs testing with new account to make sure but it's enough for me) * Higher difficulties unlock the achievements for the ones below. * Knowing what very specific actions you have to take for the best ending requires a guide and is super-easy to miss. * If you play the game on easy and medium it's quite enjoyable. On Hard it starts fun and turns into Dark souls with un-skippable 2 minute dialogues after every death... MIND... NUMBING. You will get it eventually, but it turns into super-meat-boy without the quality of life. * Keyboard macro/Turbo controller is useful for the speedruns. Cute story even tho a bit nonsensical, Interesting weapon upgrade mechanics but... Unobtainable achievement not fixed for 2+ years was the ultimate screw-U to the players. Even though it was fixed the game is still an extremely difficult endeavor so only start it if you are 100% ready for the punishment. My recommendation is to play the version online and skip this one. Not recommended.
can't exit full screen and zoomed in so much can't see the game
it's fun
Cave Story is a gem. Even in its rough and uncut state, it dazzles and surprises you with its heft and weight. This is an intermediate "cutting" of the base gem, and it certainly enhances the original's beauty and charm in many ways, while adding boosts to replay value and some nice, well, quality of life improvements over the freeware original. Certain additions/changes can be questioned, but the overall experience is in no way diminished in this port. Make sure you get all the endings!
I love the game, but I wholeheartedly hate Last Cave. 10/10, I hope spikes cease to exist. Edit: I'd like to state that the OTHER SPIKE FILLED AREA that leads to the True Final Boss gave me PTSD and I haven't touched the game in a while thanks to it, thanks devs, my hatred for spikes has been successfully increased a 1000x more now :D
