It's hard to believe the original Broken Reality came out all the way back in 2018, as soon as i saw it i knew it would be the type of game that i would love, and i did. It became something of an obsession of mine, and it's one of the few singleplayer linear games i've done multiple playthroughs of, sheerly for the joy of experiencing it again. It's a game that was with me through difficult times in my life, and even now it's surprising me in different ways. So when Broken Reality 2000 finally came out, needless to say but i was looking forwards to it. But after playing through it, even 100%ing the game, i can't help but feel that Broken Reality 2000 is just... Not nearly as unique or memorable as the original. Just to make sure it was not just nostalgia speaking i even replayed the original Broken Reality after completing 2000 to compare it, and while there are certainly some lingering issues with that original game, to me at least it still far outshines this as a sequel. First off, the story. While the original Broken Realitys story was never clear cut, you needed to do a bit of digging and interpretation to put together alot of it, the main theming was obvious. It is a story about letting go of the past. 2000s story, really does not do much, or really anything to change that up. In fact it shares alot of the same Characters and essentially the same plotline as the original. Is the game a sequel? A prequel? It is not really made clear. And while you can pick up some clues over the course of the game, it's even more bague then the original. According to one of the devs this is at least partially intentional, "it's up to you to decide!", essentially. But to me that's just not a satisfying answer. The endings between the two games is night and day to me as well, i will not spoiler things to much but BAE playing during the end sequence of the original game still lives in my mind even now. Second is the gameplay. And despite it taking me probably twice the time it took for me to beat the original game, 2000 feels it's half the game. This game has probably double the amount of areas as the original, each of which is then double the size of each of the originals regions. Despite that none of them feel quite as memorable. Most areas are so big that the game gives you an item that lets you move super fast halfway through it so you're not just walking around everywhere incredibly slowly, especially as the game expects you to move through the various regions of the game throughout it, compared to the first game where you can get almost everything done in a region as soon as you reach it. This game has you doing ALOT of fetch quests for NPCs, collect 3 bundles of dynamite, collect 3 keycodes, collect food for these people. And while yes there were a few quests like this in the original game it is ALOT more prevelent here. Third and arguably the most important in a game like this, music and graphic style. The original Broken Realitys style and music was unmatched, it truly felt like it near perfectly encapsulated the Vaporwave aesthetic it was going for. It had an incredible mixture of original music and songs from well known Vaporwave artist staples like death's dynamic shroud, BROKEN_CANYON and CYBEREALITY, each of which helped add to the themes and style the game was trying to convey. That combined with the incredible graphic style of the game, with each regions styling tying into the Vaporwave aesthetic and the digital stylisation made every area memorable and beautiful. 2000 however, with its seeming Y2K styling does not really land in the same way. Comparing areas like Grifton and GEOCITY or Domo Paridiso and Minami Beach, which in theory are very similar, two being cities and two being beaches respectively, the ones from the original game are so much better once you get a closer look. The more wonky and broken textures of the original Broken Reality, which often used real world images made heavily pixelated, more flat imaging and incorporating digital symbols and computer hardware into the world design really gave the idea that this game took place in an old and fading digital world far past its prime. Comparing that to 2000 with its much cleaner, sleeker texturing and softer edges, it doesn't give the same feeling of a digital world past its prime, it does not feel like a "Broken Reality", but rather a shiny clean new one. The music as well, for the life of me i cannot remember a single track from Broken Reality 2000, while many from the original still live in my mind. Kind of a combination of both story and style, this game feels uniquely bitter and spiteful in a way the original did not, it has many references to things like crypto, AI art, nfts, hustle culture, acab, alpha males, influencers, streaming and podcasters all of which feels out of place in what's meant to be a game about Y2K stuff, especially since half of them already feel outdated. The original game had plenty of references to memes and pop culture of the time but none of them tied into the actual story of the game as heavily nor did it feel as mean spirited as it often does here. In the end i cannot say i hate Broken Reality 2000, just that i feel i cannot love it in the same way i did the original. If you haven't played the first, go get it, give it a try, maybe if you REALLY love it, give this a go after. Otherwise i don't think i can really suggest this.

As great as the first one, achievements are a great addition. Hoverboard should be bound to shift instead of an item you have to select. 8/10
I loved it! The formula is more of the same Broken Reality, which is far from a bad thing. It's more of the same, expanded and better. It's a very intriguing adventure, with interesting lore, although very open ended. This might be a pro to some, a con to others; Matter of taste I guess; Particular merit needs to be given to the devs, they are constantly present in the feedback\bug threads, fixing any situation that gets pointed out in a matter of hours, in the first few hours the patching has been constant and precise. Bravo!
This is basically more of the same from the first Broken Reality game. I'd say I prefer the visual style, characters and story of the first game. The main highlights of this new Broken Reality 2000 are the new mechanics (such as the bow, hoverboard and the improved camera and katana) and the new locations to explore. There are also collectibles to unlock the true ending, and skins for your tools. I will mention that this game is very buggy. Sometimes you'll go throw walls, or sequence-break some parts. Or maybe you'll get stuck, and the "unstuck" button won't get you out. And the last area (
Cloud
) is extremely buggy and slow paced, and it has very frustrating puzzles and respawn points. But yeah, overall, it's a nice surreal 2000's inspired walking sim with some decent quests, puzzles and jokes. It has some downsides, but I liked most of my time with this game and its progression (the biggest exception was the last area).
I had an absolute blast playing this game! I feel like both the first game and this one hit different parts of the nostalgia spectrum, the gameplay loop is different between each one for sure but I think if you loved the first game you're gonna have a great time with this one too! They absolutely nailed the early 2000s vibe with this one, and if anything playing this game made me realize just how much nostalgia I really carry for the 2000s. I can't recommend this game enough, try it out and see!
The legendary sequel
Could use better signposting or at least an in-game hint system. Otherwise, a really enjoyable game that's far more expansive than I expected.
I really want to like this game, but it keeps randomly freezing on dialogue boxes. The first time it happened, I the game was freezing on a questgiver's dialogue, and I had to reinstall to fix it. I'll probably return to this after an update or bug patch, and give it a positive review... Right now, I'm not fond of the fact that I keep losing gametime to reloading saves.
As a big fan of the first game, I was super excited for the sequel and it definitely didn't disappoint! It's aesthetically stunning, and the level design is spectacular and the whole world feels a lot bigger than the first game. It was a shame not to have a map, however I understand that in areas that were intentionally maze-like it would have ruined the puzzle if it just told you where to go. Pros: -I adored the soundtrack and regularly get the music stuck in my head even days after finishing the game. -Was immediately excited to see the return of some characters from the original game -As a millennial, the museum and cinema areas both gave me such a great hit of nostalgia, and I also loved the frutiger aero theme of Nexus -Visual aesthetics and textures were, as always, phenomenal -I really enjoyed the ending sequences -I was glad to see more puzzles in this game than the last, even though some of them felt pretty difficult -There were more areas to explore than the first game, and they were much more detailed and had more varied mechanics than the first. -The new tools were REALLY fun and satisfying to use. -The quests were fun and gave me incentive to interactive with the world instead of just observing it. Cons: -It was sometimes unclear what the game wanted you to do, in particular because of some of the NPC dialogue being too vague/confusing (there's one particular area that I've seen a lot of players get stuck because of this) -On initial release there were some game breaking bugs that thankfully have been fixed. -Limited settings menu that is, to be fair, still being updated. But as someone who has already finished the game, it kinda sucked not being able to make mouse sensitivity any higher and it could have done with a setting to turn off bloom as that got a bit obnoxious in some parts. -Similarly, walking speed has apparently been fixed, but during my playthrough it was very slow so made the game tedious. There is a reason for this, as you are able to go faster later in the game, but boy it made those earlier sections a pain to get around. In general, I loved the game possibly even more than the first! It seemed a little more serious, but still didn't take itself TOO seriously and I got some good laughs out of it. I've seen a lot of people complain that the lore didn't quite track, however I didn't really pay much attention to the lore in the first game so it went over my head anyway and I didn't really mind. The amount of bugs/glitches in this game that are still getting fixed makes me think that maybe they should have cooked for a little longer before releasing, to make sure that the game was more fully formed (it's annoying as a Day One player to see bugs fixed after I already completed the game), however I was so excited for this game that I actually could not wait any longer for it to come out so I kind of wanted it sooner than later even with bugs lol. I highly recommend this game, and have been begging everyone I know to play it. You can get truly immersed in this game, and lost in the world in the best way, and it's the best visuals and level design I've seen in a game for a long time! You can tell the devs poured so much heart and soul into this game and it absolutely pays off.
