200 years have since passed, and the continent’s current greatest superpower, the Kingdom of Solginat, has grown into a disquieting presence. In response, the rulers of various nations, spearheaded by the queen of Mysteine—a realm that carries on Lunadea’s will—gather together to issue a formal denunciation…

After playing though the campaign once, I can fully say this is not near as polished, nor as fun as the other two games in this series. The computer AI grows in power very fast, which wouldn't be a problem, but it doesn't matter if you kill their units, and it you cannot capture their monsters. It simplifies combat and removes a very fun facet of strategy that used to define the series. You used to know what units the enemy had, and make plans for how to deal with them. Now since it doesn't matter, every enemy army is just.. samey. Your options for character development have also been reduced, you might have the choice between one or two different classes, but not switching classes to learn more skills no creative growth. Monsters are more limited with fewer choices, and their leveling paths are reduced as well. The graphics are just fine, nothing to write home about overall but they works for the game. I could go more into detail but the short version is this game is disappointing and has lost a lot of the heart of what made me love the Brigandine games, which is the deeper strategy.

Cant recommend it in its current state. I see it as pure down grade to Runesria other than the Rally System. Some maps are just straight up a pain to play in and the enemy wont engage with me until I'm past their Area of Influence so they can gang up on that Unit, it just isn't interesting or interactive until the brawl starts and even then, it feels as though we are not playing on equal playing ground even 2 levels apart from each other and their Monsters just are tankier and or do more damage, just like Runesria sniping the Rune Knight is just the way to go. I hope there is continuous support, this came out half baked and i wish it wasn't. For additional Context i have only played mission mode and not the story other than the first 2 on the demo which lead to me disliking the story mode feeling. I played as Garnet for these hours, conquered her bottom of the map, lost no battles and played on normal mode. I'm not great at Brigandine as a series I'm more of a Fire Emblem person but i just cant vibe with the enemy Ai from this experience.
Most these negative reviews are bitter old guys mad that games evolve. Its a Good game, not great. Fun af tho
It's... fine. It's not an exceptional tactics game, but it's nowhere near as bad as people are making it out to be. Playing on Hard, I'd even say this is probably the best the series has ever been mechanically even if the whole package feels worse than prior games. Brigandine has historically been one of the most snowbally tactics series out there, since your forces continue to grow in strength, but all of an enemy's good monsters get killed off or stolen after a couple of battles and they're forced to throw level 1s at you as you roll over the rest of their territory. Whether you liked the series because of all the one-sided curbstomping power fantasy or liked it despite that will probably have a large impact on how much you get out of this game. All characters and monsters in this start the game at level 1, aside from the big bad and 1-2 distant rival factions that start at level 10/15, and enemies passively gain XP every turn. The end result is that enemies are actually capable of keeping up with the player, and I haven't had a single completely one-sided throwaway fight yet on Hard even though that's kind of the norm for the rest of the series. You will eventually be fighting entire teams of promoted monsters, which never really happened before outside of scripted bosses. The AI is pretty bad (Though IMO, not really worse than usual), so it's possible the entire game is full of trivial nothing fights on Normal, but Hard feels pretty good to me. The one thing the AI is actually decent at is finding unexpected lines to focus down a unit, so you can't really get complacent. Rally is a great, versatile mechanic. Rally for a specific passive, or to reposition monsters, or to rescue low HP monsters, or to get more use out of caster monsters once they're out of MP. Probably more use cases that I can't think of at the moment, but it's very cool and adds a lot to the game. The new battle maps are a mixed bag. At best, they add a bunch of obstacles and chokepoints that genuinely can have an affect on how battles play out. At worst, they have you spawn miles away from the enemy or awkwardly split up your units so that you need to spend half a dozen turns repositioning while the enemy passively waits around as usual. It's not a bad idea, but it's not a great implementation. I like the whole base development/merc hiring econ layer, even if it's pretty simple. Previous games had pretty close to nothing going on in the strategic layer, so it's a nice change of pace. Hire mercs to run quests to get materials for base upgrades to get their campaign-wide bonuses. Material requirements give a reason to target/protect specific cities beyond just conquering everything in your path, and money is tight enough that there's a decent balancing act between hiring quest mercs/hiring very expensive unique leaders/summoning monsters/equipping units. They absolutely need to patch in the ability to automatically repeat quests though. I don't mind the more guided structure of story mode or the sometimes weird goals of mission mode, but I think it would improve the game if there was a basic sandbox mode where you could pick any faction and just have the goal of conquering every city with no time limit, since that's what a lot of people seem to want from the series. Yes, I would like more monsters and classes. Yes, I would like more branching monster/class promotion lines. Yes, I wish unique leaders had unique models. Yes, I would like a larger map. This is clearly a low-budget game, but they should have reduced costs by reusing Runersia assets and building on them rather than throwing it all away and creating a new smaller set of assets that arguably look worse. The cutscenes look awful and are so offputting that outright removing them would actually improve the game's presentation. It is absolutely overpriced, and is especially obvious when it released the day before Zero Company for the same price. I'm still having fun, and the game is asking more from me than the series ever has before, including when I played Grand Edition in Japanese without being able to read most of it. But it's very much a "one step forward, two steps back" kind of game. It's not going to win you over if you weren't a fan of previous games, but it might be worth a look (on sale) if you liked the older ones but were still critical of certain aspects.
Brigandine Abyss — Bridging the Divide

The Core Issue
If you were to ask me where Brigandine Abyss went wrong, I would not tell you that it is the graphics, the smaller map, or the new, more modern features. Yes, these things matter to each of us to different degrees, but I don't think any of them make or break the game. I think where Brigandine Abyss fails is that, fundamentally, it is a new take on the Brigandine formula. It changes some things and modernizes others. I have played Brigandine since I was a kid. I played Forsena, Grand Edition, and Runersia, and I dedicated countless hours to each of them. So for me, not only was it expected that things would change somewhat, but it was actually refreshing. However, my read on the situation is that a lot of buyers simply wanted more Brigandine in the same form as before. That was bound to cause some friction.
So, Is It Brigandine?
At its core, yes. It is Brigandine 100%. Despite what you might hear in some of the negative reviews, the content is there. Some of it has been streamlined, some of it has been modernized, and some of it could probably use a bit more polish. But the game is here, and it is there to be played and—gasp—enjoyed. And, in my opinion, it has been a lot of fun. Onto the review…
The Elephant in the Room: Price
The biggest elephant in the room with this title is, I believe, the asking price. It is $60–70* USD, which is simply way, way too much given that it is a downgrade from Runersia in a few aspects. I will not lie, the asking price seems inadequate, all things considered. I think they could get away with $40 at most, which is what I paid thanks to regional pricing.
The gameplay
As we've discussed, Abyss offers a new take on the Brigandine formula. In my eyes, this is a step in the right direction. Having played all the other games, I simply did not want another carbon copy of the same formula. I believe Sid Meier's famous "rule of thirds" is a good standard to aim for when making sequels: roughly one-third of the content stays the same, one-third is improved, and one-third is new. Does Brigandine Abyss follow this rule, or did they overstep? I would say that they have largely followed the formula that gave us six great Civilization games. However, I also believe that some of the changes they made, which they consider improvements or streamlining, may not be seen as improvements by part of the player base. At the same time, there are other aspects that need quality-of-life changes before they can really be considered worthwhile.
So what exactly does Abyss change?
First is the map. There are 28 nodes, and all playable factions start with a single one. The map is considerably smaller. There are more unique characters, yes, but a lot of players will miss having more room to maneuver and develop their territory. Elements matter much more now, arguably a little too much, and so does encirclement. Light has been made stronger against Dark, with the caveat that it is weak to all three base elements, while Dark is strong against all three. Encirclement now provides additional damage, accuracy, and critical-hit chance. These changes make the early game somewhat awkward, especially given that you are initially limited to three troops per castle. You may simply not have the appropriate elemental matchups to take certain territories without getting into a difficult fight. Knights can now command up to five monsters, and you can recruit generic knights for gold. Cross-classing knights is no longer a thing. Castles can be upgraded using materials, and a lot of the needless opacity surrounding quests has been removed. Quests can now provide materials and equippable items. Once you have acquired an item through questing, you can also purchase additional copies from the market. However, the sheer number of quest locations, combined with the affinities you need to match, can be a little overwhelming at the moment. Monsters no longer have an upkeep cost, and there is no mana currency. Gold is the only currency. In combat, troops no longer move as individual groups. Instead, an entire side takes its turn before the opposing side moves, more like many other modern strategy games. Knights can also go on training missions, with the amount of experience they receive scaling with the current season. This makes maintaining properly leveled reserves and bringing new troops up to speed easier than it has ever been. There is also a new system called Rally. Knights can "rally" a monster, temporarily removing it from the battlefield in exchange for a particular buff depending on the monster.
The Good...
The difficulty is very well done. Hard mode is very, very hard, and you can no longer simply steamroll everything during the first few hours of the game. The new layers of terrain, movement types, elemental affinities, encirclement, and Rally make combat considerably more interesting than you might expect at first. You might find yourself recruiting specific monsters to prepare for a particular fight, looking for powerful monster/knight combinations because of the Rally system, or securing high ground so you can drop down on enemies below. The maps are immensely more varied, and most of them have different quirks or features based on the region they represent. The needless obscurity surrounding the quest system is gone. Training and keeping reserves properly leveled is now easier than ever. The AI can now put up a fight instead of being relegated to sending out armies of level 1 monsters while waiting for their inevitable demise after you take a few territories.
And The Bad…
Questing Can Be Overly Complicated. As it stands right now, the questing system is arguably a little too complex. You have to match knights, affinities, and monsters to get better results, and certain items you might need may only be accessible from specific parts of the map. You Can No Longer Cross-Class Knights. Honestly, since Runersia, cross-classing was largely accessory, only really being done with a few select knights for a power boost. Since regular knights had become so much better and more effective in their base classes, it simply wasn't really worth the effort. For some people, the graphics are inferior to Runersia. A few monster variants and special evolutions are missing, and we have not really gotten an equivalent amount of new content to compensate for them. There are some notable quality-of-life features missing. For example, you cannot create equipment presets, which makes managing equipment considerably more tedious than it needs to be. There is currently a time limit in Story Mode that cannot be removed or modified. There is no customization for game modes yet, either. There is quite a bit of micromanagement in the strategy layer if you want to play optimally. There are no real improvements to the AI compared to previous entries. Maneuvering on the map can take a bit of time, given the bigger maps and their quirks.
Closing Thoughts
Frankly, dear reader, to me at least, Brigandine: Abyss has been the most fun time I've had playing a Brigandine game. I love its new systems, I love the complexity and possibilities, and I love figuring out all the new stuff and failing in the process. If I wanted another runersia, I would simply play runersia. And make no mistake: they did not pull a Darkest Dungeon II or anything of the sort. This is not a spin-off or a bad sequel. This is Brigandine. The essence of the game is still here, and it largely follows the same formula we all love. What Abyss doesn't do is take the exact same thing for the fourth time in a row and repackage it for you. That would be boring. It modernizes some things, streamlines others, and improves the rest. but at its core it is the same. If you can acknowledge and accept that, I think it is worth it.
