so i love zero gravity racing games. three biggest ones being F-zero, Redout, and Sonic Riders. this game is pretty fun overall and is really well made. but i cant recommend it for a couple reasons.
The campaign is boring
with redout at least, there was some customization to be had with your vehicle. there were so many tracks to play and the difficulty was just enough for me to keep trying, getting faster and faster. this game doesn't have that though. most of the campaign is just 1 or 2 actual races and the rest being boring time trial challenges or survival mode. i think a better way to reinvent the campaign would be the F-zero/Sonic riders route where you would have different racers with personalities or names attached to a certain vehicle. maybe even a rival NPC that would outpace you sometimes. With the "ai adjusted difficulty" of every race (which is turned on automatically and you are not aware of it), basically every race is breeze and becomes the exact same outcome. Another side gripe is not being able to use workshop ships in campaign. this is more a personal gripe for me, but i'd think it would be more fun and break up the monotony of said campaign if we could use our workshop vehicles in it. It really says something to me when the custom singleplayer races seem to be way more fun than doing anything in the campaign.
Tutorial is lacking
i had a hard time even finding where the tutorial starts. apparently the tutorial level is just a infinite race zone and you wouldn't even know where the guide is until you went to the pause menu. the guide isn't even that helpful and some of the explanations of how the controls should work do not make a whole alot of sense. i learned alot better from just playing the game regularly and crashing over and over again than i did from anything in the tutorial. i got better relatively quickly, but it still feels like a pretty big oversight in game design.
No lobbies
really i think the main thing this game could do with is some kind of matchmaking or maybe public lobbies. i cant really convince my friends to drop $15 for a racing game from a niche subgenere (zerograv) when they got other stuff to play thats usually cheaper and/or has more replay value. What i think this game really needs is a 4-player pack thats like $20-$25 respectively. that would definitely convince people to get it and be able to play with their friends in online races, as couch co-op isnt really a huge thing on PC versus console and i would LOVE to play this game with my friends at some point. From a singleplayer perspective, i cannot recommend this game to people until they improve the campaign and make it more dynamic or interesting than just "challenges".

Not the game I'd expected it to be. The core mechanics of the game are fairly decent, but I was just not having fun with the main campaign. Those consist of too many time trials (in which you later need 4 solid decent laps to get gold) and 'zone' modes. The basic setup of each campaign is also a bit boring, consisting of 3 maps that you'll be playing over and over, untill you go to the next bracket. The ships handle well and most of the maps are decent or good (some maps have too many bumpy areas). The game fails in it's campaign setup and I didn't find the weapons to be very satisfying to use. Probably the best wipeout clone out there, but to me, every PS3-era wipeout game is much, much better than this game.
I never really knew what to think about the Wipeout games when I played them back in the day. It didn't quite have the approachability of other combat racers or the speed of other AG racers and it took a great deal longer to grab me the way other franchises did. I have been made a believer by BallisticNG. What was a style of game that I knew was good but didn't fully understand has been translated, perfected and polished into something so good that it stands on its own and will no doubt age into golden nostalgia as one of the greatest to ever do it. This game is fast, it's punchy, it's floaty and difficult to master but from my shaky beginnings to hearing the split announcer call a perfect lap I was hooked. I cannot begin to describe my lost love of lighting up an opponent with cannons or sending the perfect plasma burst across the track to eliminate an opponent you could never hope to catch on your flying skills alone. There is just so much attention to detail, blood, sweat and bullets that make this experience a precious splinter of time that is every bit as rewarding to learn and learn again as the inspirations that paved it's way to the top. An absolute triumph of AG racing that we're so lucky to have today.
Actually the best AG racer ever made. The gameplay transcends its Wipeout roots, and both the official and fanmade tracks and campaigns will keep you busy for a long while. Online is most active on Saturdays, check it out!
Best anti gravity racer since wipeout. Controls are perfect. I like how the game gives you options for a more ps1-looking retro style or a more clean modern one. I mostly play on the steam deck which works great, but had to move to a bigger TV for the faster speed classes (could just be my bad eyes).
Peak wipeout like experience. :)
Have had this game for a while now. Great fun when I first got it and periodically visit it from time to time. Love seeing the native content grow with time and the community even moreso. My only gripe is that the main campaign is focused around WipeOut 3 physics moreso than WipeOut HD physics - not to say it doesn't exist (I see you 2280 campaign). Would've loved to see a a more seamless campaign blend between the two physics modes. Not to worry though, that's merely a preference than a strike against this game. Does not stop me from getting hooked and tilted repeating certain races from the brutal AI in Expert mode (circa 2021-2022, idk if it has been updated then). Runs well on most systems I own (oldest one being a 4770 16GB + 2060) and Steam Deck. The physics itself is faster than the original WipeOut, so a 144Hz+ display is a boon to visual fidelity in faster game modes. Credits to VonSnake and the team, excellent game period. (Yes I know there's community content for 2280.)
This is weird one. its like a time machine. At times it gets so close to the original ps1 experience of playing WipEout, it tricks my mind. The way the ship moves, the very impressive set of visual options to emulate that typical psx look, the music, the attention to detail given to the whole graphic design... they all contribute to what must probably be the most nostalgic out-of-this-time game ever made. This experience can be augmented even, with the right mods. The game provides an robust and easy-to-use framework to integrate a large variety of new and altered content into the game Speaking of those mods. There is one crazy person contributing an insane amount of excellent custom tracks of which the quality is more than often barely discernable from the amazing tracks the devs have come up with. Just check the Workshop. It is absolutely nuts!
Do you like WipeOut? Here's WipeOut, but for PC. Includes PS1-reminiscent graphical options, leaderboards and mod support.
