This game is great. Some bits and pieces of the writing might feel pretty outdated, but all in all it is a great game. Throne of Bhaal sucks though.
Hard to start with this one without knowing the first game — and importing your character from BG1 honestly feels like a proper sequel instead of a new save file pretending to be one. Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition is faster, denser and way more eventful. Instead of wandering empty wilderness, you’re constantly running into quests, conspiracies, liches living in basements (as one does) and problems that escalate from “rats in the house” to “political crisis and possible apocalypse”. Locations and enemies are far more varied, and the story — especially Irenicus — is still considered one of the best RPG antagonists. Combat becomes much more tactical too: buffs, dispels and pre-fight preparation are basically half the gameplay. If you don’t pause, you die. Simple medieval science. + fantastic story and villain + huge variety of quests, enemies and locations + importing your character from BG1 + deep, very tactical combat − class balance issues in late game / Throne of Bhaal
