I am a fan of RPGs, and I do not doubt there is a great game here. However, many elements failed to maintain my interest. I enjoyed Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, but by the time I reached this, much of the novelty had worn off. A significant portion of the experience feels dated. Many systems are inherited directly from older D&D rules, and they often come across as unintuitive or poorly communicated. Gameplay, at times, feels like a slog. Spell design is particularly uneven. Some spells feel almost useless, while others are essential, creating a lack of balance that limits meaningful experimentation. For much of the game, my mages contributed very little outside of maintaining long-duration buffs. I also found myself wishing for more creative uses of abilities, such as environmental interactions or puzzle-solving. This imbalance extends across classes, where the difference between effective and ineffective choices is not clearly conveyed. The interface adds to the friction. It feels outdated and often works against the player rather than supporting them. Combined with the visual presentation, the overall experience can feel more dated than other games of a similar era. There are clear strengths in the writing. Some companion moments are excellent and hint at a deeper narrative quality. However, the main antagonist felt distant and somewhat one-dimensional during my time with the game, which made it harder to stay invested. I wish the Enhanced Editions had done more to modernize these systems. What this experience ultimately left me hoping for is a full remake that brings these ideas forward with modern design sensibilities, similar to what games like Pillars of Eternity achieved. At the end of the day, I would only recommend it to players with a strong appreciation for classic CRPGs. Despite my interest in the genre, my patience ran out before the game could fully win me over.
