Balatro

This was my introduction to the roguelike deckbuilder genre, drawn in by the interesting theme. It's poker, but also not at all. There are different kinds of cards and modifiers, and lots of different ones inside of those categories, adding a lot of variety to the game. This makes it a lot of fun to play and replay. The game also has a lot of different challenges to unlock cards and achievements, so those will keep you busy for a while.

After playing this game for a while I decided to hit up my local casino. It turns out that you can't bring cards made out of glass to a poker table, and you also can't bring a joker card and say your hand is multiplied by 1.5x. The owner of the casino called me a "crackhead" and said I could "never come back". I assume he's just new to the game of Poker so I'll just come back another day and tell him to check this game out. Overall it's a 10/10 from me, really addictive.

empecé bajando balatro porque vi un video random a las tres de la mañana y pensé "qué lindo, un juego de cartas con payasos y números, seguro me va a entretener un rato y después sigo con mi vida". lo descargué creyendo que iba a ser feliz. que iba a sentir esa satisfacción de armar combos, de ver números subir, de ganar una run de vez en cuando y sentir que por fin controlaba algo. que me iba a reír de los jokers raros y después cerrar el juego y seguir con lo mío. pero no. balatro no es un juego. es una trampa con estética de casino barato y música de feria. primero te engaña con la sencillez. "es solo poker con modificadores", te dice. y yo, iluso, le creí. arranqué una run. perdí. arranqué otra. perdí de nuevo. pero esta vez casi llegué al antepenúltimo boss. y ahí empezó la mentira más grande: "casi". ese "casi" es el gancho. el "casi" es lo que te hace abrir otra run. y otra. y otra. hasta que mirás el reloj y son las seis de la mañana y tenés clase a las siete y media y todavía estás pensando en si el blueprint copiaba el joker correcto o no. después llegaron los mods. cryptid. el pack de jokers absurdos. las seeds rotas. las runs de mil manos. y de golpe el juego base ya no alcanzaba. necesitaba más. más caos. más números que no tienen sentido. más formas de romper el juego hasta que deje de ser un juego y se convierta en una experiencia religiosa. pasé de "juego un ratito" a "necesito ver qué pasa si combino este joker con este otro y este otro y este otro". mi cerebro se reconfiguró. ahora cuando cierro los ojos veo cartas. cuando estoy en el bondi estoy calculando probabilidades. cuando estoy comiendo estoy pensando en si debería haber vendido ese joker o no. y lo peor es que a veces gano. gano una run imposible y siento esa descarga de dopamina que me hace creer que valió la pena. que todo el tiempo perdido, todas las noches sin dormir, todas las veces que dije "ya después de esta" y mentí, valieron la pena porque logré esa combinación perfecta. pero al día siguiente estoy de nuevo en el menú principal, mirando el botón de new run como un adicto mira el próximo cigarrillo. balatro no te hace feliz. te hace adicto a la posibilidad de ser feliz. te vende la ilusión de que en la próxima run va a estar esa combinación mágica que te va a dar la victoria definitiva. y cuando la conseguís, dura tres segundos. después el vacío vuelve. y el vacío pide otra run. ahora estoy atrapado. sé que estoy atrapado. sé que es una trampa. y aún así abro el juego. porque el "casi" sigue ahí. y el "casi" nunca se va.

The king of deck building roguelikes. At first glance, Balatro feels almost entirely RNG. Starting off as any poker game, that’s by design. After a handful of runs, you’ll understand that this game is rooted in rewarding purposeful decision-making. It's here the game begins to open up. In this game, you build an engine centered around discovering joker combinations and manipulating your deck. Your long term goal is to optimize your hand scoring by improving your deck, jokers, and economy. Each run is unique and the decisions you make in each run feel meaningful. You’ll decide things like if spending money one round is worth losing interest next round on potentially better options in the shop. Or which planet cards to prioritize, down to crafting your deck. Balatro has varying levels of difficulty in the form of stakes and types of decks, each with different rules and conditions that make the game challenging even after hundreds of hours. Another great benefit as a deckbuilder - it's incredibly easy to put this game down at any given moment. Being able to step away to change a diaper or be Dad was a huge plus for me. 10/10 - Looking forward to what LocalThunk has cooking in the next update. Earning C++ was a blast!
