Balatro

I understand the Jokers. I understand the multipliers. I understand that if I combine enough ridiculous cards, planets, enhancements, editions, and deeply irresponsible financial decisions, the number on the screen becomes very large. I still do not understand poker. Balatro is a game about carefully building a deck, creating powerful synergies, stacking every possible advantage in your favor, and then watching RNG look directly at your strategy and say: “No.” You can have the perfect Joker setup. You can upgrade the exact hands you want. You can manipulate the deck until it is barely recognizable as playing cards. Then the game deals you absolute garbage and calmly asks why you failed to plan better. The core loop is incredibly addictive. Every run creates that dangerous feeling that the next combination will finally break the game wide open. One more unlock. One more Joker. One more attempt. Then you hit the wall. And once you hit it, Balatro starts to feel less like progression and more like repeatedly applying for permission to get lucky. It is technically a roguelike, but the long-term progression mostly consists of unlocking more things that might appear in future runs. You are not necessarily becoming stronger. You are expanding the catalog of objects RNG can choose not to give you. Most of the unlocks feel negligible, and eventually the game stops rewarding persistence and starts testing how many times you are willing to rebuild the same machine before chance kicks it down again. Still, it is dangerously good at making failure feel temporary. You lose. You stare at the menu. You tell yourself the run was ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Then you immediately start another one because this time you definitely understand poker. 8/10. Would create a mathematically beautiful deck and lose to a pair again. And don’t let Balatro distract you from the fact that in 1998, The Undertaker threw Mankind off Hell in a Cell, and he plummeted 16 feet through an announcer’s table.
