About
Several hundred years ago, a cataclysmic catastrophe nearly ripped your galaxy apart - an impassable ring of torn hyperspace fabric appeared in the center of the galaxy, which normal hyperspace engines can’t overcome.
Since this Event nobody has managed to get near the central regions of the galaxy. All you know is that the Event also spawned multiple untraversable hyperspace rifts throughout the entire galaxy and that a strange race of aliens, the Xsotan, has appeared in the center. It looks like these aliens have found a way to cross over the torn hyperspace fabric, but so far nobody has managed to establish contact with them.
There are also rumors about a strange new metal called ‘Avorion’ which has appeared in the center of the galaxy around the same time as the Xsotan have arrived. Apparently, the aliens use this material to build their ships.
Start out as a nobody at the edge and work your way to the center of a galaxy that gets more dangerous, but also more rewarding the closer you get to its core. Avorion takes sandbox aspects from games like X or Freelancer, throws in co-op multiplayer and lets you build your own ships. It features ships made of freely scalable blocks that can be procedurally generated and that break into pieces where they're hit in space fights.
Equip your ship with chainguns, lasers and other weaponry to take on your enemies and enjoy the sight of completely destructible ships breaking at the exact points where you hit them.
Defend your allies from pirates, hunt down enemies for coin or even participate in wars between entire factions. Once you’re victorious, collect loot from defeated foes which you can use to upgrade your ship: new turrets with special abilities like autofire or repair beams, or system upgrades that allow you to install even more weapons. Build hangars and command squads of fighters in your battles or destroy enemy freighters to steal their cargo.
Fly through beautiful nebulas and dense asteroid fields in search of hidden treasures and meet the many factions that populate and control their portion of the galaxy. Each faction has its own characteristics, such as peaceful, intelligent or aggressive, and its ships and stations have a distinct look.
Explore the galaxy at your own pace to find valuable goods in old ship wrecks, undiscovered asteroid fields rich in resources, gigantic asteroids which you can claim for yourself, or clues about what happened during the Event a few centuries back.
There are no limits to the size or complexity of your ship besides your resources. But there is also a creative mode where you can just build to your heart’s content. You're not bound to the standard voxel style and while building an awesome ship in Avorion you won't get lost in lots and lots of micro-management.
You can focus on building a great-looking ship, without having to worry about making it work. But always keep an eye on your ship’s maneuverability and energy requirements. Adjust your ship perfectly to its operational purpose: everything from light and agile explorers to heavily armored battleships with strong shields.
And why build only one ship? Hire captains to fly your ships for you, manage your crews, weapons, hangars and fighters and build your own fleet of spaceships!
Extend your ship with a cargo bay, find profitable deals and haul over a hundred trading goods across the galaxy to make a profit and buy your way up the food chain. Constructing a fleet of specialized transport ships with lots of cargo space will help you build up a trading corporation.
Extend your influence in the galaxy by founding asteroid mines and factories that attract NPC traders who will buy and sell their goods at your establishments. Install trading systems that detect trading routes and supply and demand over multiple sectors and become the richest commander in the galaxy!
Or maybe you're sick of being the good guy? Just raid freighters, smuggle illegal goods, or become a headhunter.
You don't have to face all of these challenges alone! Avorion features co-op multiplayer, so team up with your friends to build stations together and destroy pirates and enemy factions!
Everybody needs a copilot, and you can fly ships together, with one of you doing the steering and the other one taking care of firing weapons. Work with each other to extend your influence in the galaxy and build your own empire.
Or, you know, blow your friends apart. It's a sandbox, you can do whatever you want!
In Avorion you choose your personal playstyle. Haul cargo, find profitable trading routes and found factories. Or maybe you're sick of being the good guy? Build your own battleship, equip it with powerful weaponry and blow away your enemies. Be the aggressor that starts wars with entire factions, raid freighters, smuggle illegal goods and scavenge old wreckages. Find your way to the center of a galaxy that gets more hostile, but also more rewarding the closer you get to its core.

Great concept, poor execution. Playing in normal single player mode, you run into all sorts of pirate or enemy factions that have a magical "block" that stops you from being able to warp away when in serious danger. Lazy development. Also, progression to higher tiers is blocked by stupid missions or random encounters. Final boss is boring and anti-climactic. The game has a really good core behind it but the issues i mentioned drag it down too far to be considered a great game. The grind is also way too tedious. Unfortunately there is no real skill, it's all about having a bigger ship than your enemies based on how much your grind for it. I'd rather eat horse meat medium rare.

I always come back to this game when the library dries out. With decent size of community made mods, QOL mods and vice versa, it will enhance and enrich the sandbox experience. If you want to have a "X"-sort-of experience, there is also an overhaul mod "Expended Avorion" for you try. Otherwise, this is one of the lasting sandbox game I ever had. You can further enrich your encounters with "Faction Packs" where NPCs will use those community made ships within that pack. There is no planetary landings, what a shame. We got giant asteroids tho. This game is playable with friends, the host may need to have a stronger rig or a server if playing with a larger group (5+).

Honestly, building ships in this game feels like crack. Most of my playtime has likely been sunk into building and that really shows. Of course there are multiple ways of playing the game: Bounty hunting, trading or mining your way through the galaxy are all fully valid ways of playing and allows you to play just how you like. Builders beware, you might get stuck like I now am; Building ships with thousands of individual blocks over the course of multiple days, fixating over the smallest of details that might not even be visible in the finished product. If building isn't something that interests you however but you still want a good looking ship, there is a solution! The workshop is filled with incredible builders creating awe inspiring ships readily available for use at any stage of the game, whether that be for early game or late game. If games with dynamic, seemingly living worlds where you can have an effect on your surroundings interest you then this is a game i recommend highly. Despite having a lower end computer, the game handles quite well. After longer periods in the same area with numerous ships all exceeding 7 k blocks, some even reaching 15 k there is a noticeable drop in performance. This is only a behavior I've noticed in my sandbox save file due to having a parade of giant ships so hopefully it won't be an issue for anyone else as they play the campaign. A simple shut down of the game then loading it up again always rectifies the issue. Honestly can't recommend the game enough for the people interested in this genre! Give it a shot, please. It deserves a far greater amount of love than it is currently receiving from the broader gaming world! If you ever decide to give it a shot, remember: It takes time to really become "Good" at the game, especially when it comes to building, and you must allow yourself patience and time to get into the swing of things.
Avorion, by far way better and deeper than no man sky would ever be able to get. But still, this still feels like a early acces game and it is not, it is fully released and updates are slow and far in between. At first as said by far it is the best space simulator but after a while you gonna reach the bussy places. Everything is bound to RAM so if you in a bussy part of the universe when they use seperate drones to mine. Some pirate fleet popping in and you be rubber banding like crazy because the game tries to eat up 16GB RAM at once. It is a real bummer that you capped out on 4 to 6 ships because otherwise you can't play and that all because AI uses or drones to mine or drones to attack, one ship + 10 drones = 11 ships in RAM. Terrible optimization The further you go the worse it gets, after defeating the end boss which is just get more dps than he does damage to you, it only gets worse with the 30+ ships attack forces that also spawn in summoners which in turn spawn in even more. Huge ships that JUMP?!?! WTF IS FUN ABOUT THAT?!? After the end boss you only be running on 1 to 3 fps and crashes are regular. If I knew this all I would have never bought this trash. Ship building is the same, building does not work and is all blocky. And the end all your ships look like flat pancakes who are barely moveable.
Developer - you've done a great job, of course. I bought the game a long time ago, like 4 years back. I can see the game is interesting, but back then it was a rough draft. I supported you and bought the game. I was incredibly surprised by its changes and how much it has improved. However, after a 4-year break, I didn't understand a lot of the mechanics and tried to figure them out through trial and error, deliberately avoiding external resources and guides. I was interested in trying for myself. And everything was cool, the game is interesting, especially once you get the hang of the shipbuilding menu. But ♥♥♥♥, man, what a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ pig you are. Holy ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥. This is where I stop my playthrough. How the ♥♥♥♥ could you put "Rift Research Stations" and "Rifts" in the game, and show those subsystem rewards at the rift stations that make you ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ drool, and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ nowhere write that this is only available in a DLC? You have no ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ idea how much time I spent in the game clicking around trying to figure out how to get in there. It's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I played through the entire game thinking that at the end they'd give me a teleport or maybe a technology or material would unlock. I watched videos, of which there aren't many for this game. And in the videos, people have a mission board, but I don't. For the longest time, I couldn't figure out why I didn't have a mission board. I even used an AI to search for information on this problem. And only on the 12th prompt with DeepSeek did I see the answer I was looking for. No DLC, therefore no mission board, and the rift is closed for me. WHAT THE ♥♥♥♥. Was it really so difficult to make this more obvious? I mean, on those smuggler missions, it clearly says that some DLC is needed. And that's exactly why I didn't think the rifts needed one—because the game didn't give me a hint, I just downloaded the game from my library and started playing. After all this searching and the cold response from the AI telling me it's my own fault—I have no more desire to play this game. GG.
This is an amazing game made by a single awesome developer just making something he wants to play. I highly recommend it.
