Well made and everything just not my type of game.
Incredibly interesting V/N novel with Lovecraftian elements but really needs a flow chart for choices and maybe a section of the gallery with the info that you've collected from conversations with people like how the families work and who you collected the info from.
It's a short game, around 4 hours, that you can replay a bunch of times. But to what end? I didn't get any special vibes from this. Not lovecraftian. Not gothic fiction. Not murder mistery. The only thing you get is basically an atmosphere of a small-minded and spiteful nature. Most characters are bad. You can mess around trying to kill specific ones, but I suspect you have to replay / click through a lot of stuff repeatedly to get what you want. Some characters are decent, and ideally you would want to save them, but it's the same deal. Maybe I just had an unlucky playthrough, but nothing really happened. The somewhat intriguing plotlines all fell flat. I didn't learn about the entity they worshipped. I didn't get a chance to tell arrogant pricks apart from actually evil characters. You don't know what your choices will do. The characters don't have personalities that you can discern so you don't know what to say to them to build rapport. All in all, at a very heavily-discounted price, it's okay. I hope there is a more complete story in there if you take the time to play all the possible paths. I mean if you have a lifespan of at least 500 years.

An interesting game. It's not quite a time travel game but a game where your character remembers certain details from past playthroughs and this opens up your possibilities. Every day a 'spirit' or something offers you the chance to play through the day again. The idea of playing the game over again with new information (in character) opens up some interesting possibilities. The game has stylistic similarities to games like The Sexy Brutale where you know what's going to happen in the future and you take pains to thwart it. Or maybe you let it happen after all. There's a big roster of characters which might be considered kind of drawback because the game doesn't have enough time and material to flesh most of them out so they end up feeling mostly like window dressing. I feel like the biggest problem in the game is that there needed to be MORE of it, which from a certain perspective isn't the worst problem for the game to have. The game sets up what feeling like a very interesting world and what could be interesting characters but it doesn't seem to have enough time/material to properly develop and make use of them. I did enjoy playing through the game and I think it's worth a playthrough if you like dark VNs with a slight lovecraftian twist. The lovecraft theme is actually very slight. I think the game's premise shows some innovation and I'm curious what else this developer might produce.
Super fun game, and interesting world!
November 29 Edit: I worked with the devs to locate those rare moments where
dead
characters show up where they shouldn't. I still need to do a few more checks, but most, if not all, of these instances should have been rectified in the latest update! There is also a guide in development to detail how to get the four different endings, which should help people wanting a roadmap. Super happy about these changes! Original November 16 Review: As evidenced by my playtime, I have been thoroughly enjoying At Eve's Wake for longer than most. I'm a sucker for a good visual novel, and this one was an absolute blast. I don't want to give too much away because I honestly think it's better to go in completely blind like I did; however, what I will say is this:
If you like the idea of The Hunger Games combined with Knives Out and cosmic horror, then this game is for you!
Compliments: - The plot is loads of fun and interesting - High replay value - Solid game length, especially considering the replayability factor - Good music (I genuinely never got tired of it after 22 hours) - Nice art, both background and character - Good game mechanics (i.e., for personality and dialogue choices) - Your choices matter significantly Criticisms: - Desperately needs a skip-read-text button (my arm is actually aching from rapidly clicking to skip dialogue so many times and that is also half of the reason my playtime is so long) - Quite a few typos or mistakes where
dead characters appear in scenes that they should not be in or events that didn't happen in one replay are treated as if they did (i.e., a character who is alive can be talked about as if they are dead, etc.) and times when my actions were forgotten, leading me to have to do another playthrough to make my character remember them for the true ending to unlock
- Would love to see a roadmap implemented and for it to be made clearer when you're making a permanent choice that will, quite literally, prevent you from accessing certain quests or endings - Better save system (five save slots is simply not enough for a game like this) - Sometimes my actions don't seem to have made an effect when they should have - There are a lot of characters and I wish they were more fleshed out (I still have unanswered questions about some of them) Is it a perfect game? No. Does it need some serious tweaking in areas? Yes. Nevertheless, I had a really good time and it's something I could see myself coming back to revisit in the future despite how much time I've already invested into it.
Great game
I was reluctant to play it, expecting a usual detective whodunit thing. The demo showed I was wrong, this game is a thriller. The full game is glorious. There are plenty of subversions and plenty of decisions that aren't right or wrong. It tested my own convictions and left me pondering my actions. Highly recommend!
Really, really enjoyed "At Eve's Wake"! Keeping this review short because with this game in particular it is best to dive in "cold", without knowing too much.
