Angel Essence

Angel Essence is a great 3D platformer with plenty of mobility options. The main path through each area is largely linear, but there are plenty of side paths with secrets to discover and the game is extremely flexible in regards to the order in which you visit areas and acquire mandatory and optional upgrades. Nearly every upgrade significantly increases your movement capabilities and several upgrades have more utility than is initially apparent, encouraging players to experiment and discover the full extend of the options available to them. Progression in general feels great and by the end of the game you can casually fling yourself rapidly across areas which originally felt far more challenging to safely navigate. Simply reaching the end of the game provides a decent, satisfying challenging, but you can sink plenty of hours into using late-game upgrades to find often extremely well-hidden secrets and to take on many significantly more difficult optional challenges. Angel Essence's freeform approach to mobility and general progression makes it a fantastic game for speedrunners and completionists alike. The only area where I feel Angel Essence is lacking is in its combat. The enemies are interesting to look at, but they are consistently nonthreatening. Other than in a certain optional area, enemy attacks cannot harm the player and instead take away some of the resource used as currency, which is a decision I don't have any issue with since the platforming is the focus here. However, enemy attacks are generally so easy to avoid and remove such a small amount of currency that the combat system as a whole ends up feeling completely trivial (other than in the case of an optional boss). This is by no means a dealbreaker since combat is far from this game's focus, but I did sometimes find myself wondering why combat existed at all in the first place.

Fun stuff! It certainly wears its inspiration on its sleeve -- which inspires certain expectations, and, in my case, let to a bit of frustration with the wall-kick... However, after a while of seeing the new ideas and mechanics this game implements and getting used to everything (mainly, the idea that, just because it does something different from Psudoregalia, doesn't mean it's bad), I quite enjoyed it! It gives you a TON of mobility right off the bat, which allows for some real fun sequence breaks ([spoiler]in my case, I got the dash before the wall run[/spoiler]) and a lot of freedom to explore. All of the upgrades I found were impactful and worked synergistically with each other. By the endgame I felt like I was playing a Sonic game more than a 3D platformer. There's also a lot of cool tech to discover, which the game (to my knowledge) doesn't explicitly tell you. My only real gripe with the game is the lack of an input buffer. You NEED to be touching the ground for your jump press to count, which can be a bit frustrating (especially with [spoiler]chaining plummet jumps[/spoiler]). A couple-frame buffer would improve the game a ton, imo. In short, if you enjoyed Psudoregalia and are looking for something to scratch that itch, this is definitely up there. Just keep an open mind that it doesn't play exactly the same.

very fun little game, runs great on deck. can be stretched out over several play sessions or beaten in one sitting if you rush hard. i'll be coming back to play it because the movement is fun. like Pseudoregalia, whose Dev is in the special thanks at the credits.

Fun game, the allowance for sequence breaking is fun to play with. The controls do get a bit complicated, but once you start engaging with them, it makes sense. Yep! Yep!
