It's difficult to recommend this not because I think it's too complex, too niche, or bad, but because I think it's very hard to describe why it's fun. The equivalent of Rimworld raids are never a threat, the resource management in terms of sustainability is super easy, and a fair bit of the gameplay is fast forwarding as inner disciples just cultivate. You know fast forwarding in Rimworld while somebody just researches, since we're on that topic? It's like that. But there's so much going on, so many numbers being thrown at you, and so many things that make you go "Huh? How's that work?" that you keep going. You even have a "Discuss" button where people leave comments that (I think) are supposed to be helpful but instead a bunch of 老外 are just as confused as you are. And while this is happening you're optimizing 风水 only to see that because you've done well channeling 气 a wall has come alive and waltzed off. And then 天命 strikes down one of your half-animal people because you didn't build them correctly in time. And you realize a corner of the map has a killer demon animal from 幽冥 that is now set loose. But then at some point you're so well-versed in this 屁话 that you're operating on its wavelength. Stuff like building a sect gate so negatively tuned that prospective disciples die the second they enter it so you can use their essence to fuel their cultivation becomes intuitive. And then when things become rote and you think you've seen it all you get stuff like new ways to ascend like Shendao or Physical cultivations and the process repeats. I guess the best way to put it since we're all like Rimworld this and that is that this game is sort of like Anomaly, but a whole game and set in 中国. Everything is cool the first time you see it and there's so much fun in learning how it works, but not a whole lot different ways things pan out once you've learned the systems. But man is it fun and ridiculous every stretch of the way. I really don't recommend you guide slave it and just learn from exposure and the in-game hints left by people. Consult one when you hit a wall, but try and be conservative because once you get things down to a science there's no wonder left. Time wasted on the clock writing this review: 38 min

This game will change your life if you let it. I wish I could say that you could go in blind, but you really can't if you're an English speaker. There are a ton of different kinds of cultivation with different rules, and the game doesn't hold your hand through any of it. You will fail; your sect will die many times before you grasp the best ways to ensure their survival. And you will want them to survive, because they are are adorable Chinese chibi-humans striving for immortality. They need warm and cool clothes for summer, meals, comfortable rooms--just like real people. (Rimworld comparisons are accurate, but I think this game is a bit less punishing.) If you get the wrong feng shui in a bedroom, the disciple assigned to it could die in the middle of the night. The Chinese five elements system, Daoism, and general magicy stuff is usually fun, but it can cause trouble for your tiny protagonists if you're not careful. This game has a little bit of everything and it can be overwhelming at first. In addition to caring for your own people, you need to manage relations with a dozen or so other sects, some of which are responsible for your own sect's poverty and precarious position on the world stage. If you try to play the game the developers intended, you'll need to follow a guide that's about 80 pages long. Fortunately, this lengthy quest is entirely optional. I only attempted it after I was familiar with most of the game's other mechanics. There's some cool stuff you get for completing the main storyline, but you can play indefinitely without touching that storyline and still have a ton of fun. Choice is king in this game. Want to wipe out the other sects? Go for it. Want to raise a dragon, or a phoenix, or an adorable dog? You can! (And all three at once with mods!) Want to rescue all the animals and turn them into your disciples? Totally achievable once you know what you're doing. Want to raise your enemies as zombie workers in your fields? For the low, low price of evil sect reputation points, you can. The game is also very moddable, so you can do things like marry and have children with those options downloaded. You can play this game exactly the way you want thanks to mods. There are tons of customization options like clothes and weapons available, and they look different. Your tiny cult members can be highly individualized and specialized in their tasks. I really enjoy that the game seems to be endless (my oldest cult has existed for 3000+ days). You can just chill in your little sect world with soothing music and epic weather (thunderstorms have dragons and are awesome!) and manage your cultivators' lives. You can also build some impressive structures and buildings for your sect. Part life sim, part magic school, part world sim, it really does have a little of everything, and the mechanics can be surprisingly deep. Buy it if you want to scratch a magical Sims itch, or if the research needed doesn't bother you. This is my second-favorite game of all time, and it is worth the effort to learn.
Amazing Cultivation Simulator takes you on a wonderful journey of micromanaging a mostly daoist sect of babies that will die of fright if the door of their room faces the wrong direction or someone drops a relic on the floor. You will interact with humans, monsters, bosses, and visitors from other sects who will give you a 1 star rating despite being assigned the nicest room in the sect, because they decided to stand next to a cowpat. You are supposed to eventually kill the other sects. I never got that far, but I can appreciate the sentiment. You get a pet dog who will defecate on people's beds unless you specifically discourage him from doing that. You also have the option of making him defecate exclusively on people's beds. Feces are a game mechanic. A surprising number of sect leaders seems to love dragon feces in most of my runs, which sucks because those things are pretty helpful if you let your cultivators meditate next to them. My rooster got a toothache once and there is a lively discourse over the fact that the English translation uses 'female bull' instead of cow. People can leave comments on objects which range in usefulness from full on guides, which you should read if you want to have any hope of not getting wiped out, to the aforementioned cow discourse. It's a Rimworld with a daoist cultivation theme. Don't let anyone shame you into not downloading the convenience mods. Or do. I probably wouldn't have sunk over 1200 hours (as of the time of writing this review) into this game without them. Take this as either a glowing recommendation or a stark warning.
I've never finished this game, I get bored after getting a few GC1 cultivators and just stop playing. But it seems like it's probably a good game.
Recommended, because this game delivers what it promises: A RimWorld-like base game, overlaid with all the classic xianxia tropes: cultivation, warring sects, inner and outer disciples, manuals describing powerful techniques, and popular Daoist-inspired mysticism. The RimWorld-like portions of the game are a bit basic. The work priority system is limited to "on" and "off", and you can't say "make timber from logs whenever I have less than 30 timber". But unlike some RimWorld knockoffs, you do need to pay attention to individual disciples, including the outer disciples who actually do the work. As a RimWorld-like game, it's a decent B-tier. Inner disciples require significant individualized attention, because they're your major weapons, your adventurers, and your magic crafters. The game mechanics support the literary tropes here: the main job of your inner disciples is to become ever more powerful. But xianxia is all about gaining power through esoteric knowledge. And this game really leans into "esoteric knowledge" mechanically: You will need to learn Daoist elementalist interactions. You will need to care about the feng shui of your bedrooms. You will be constantly searching for secret manuals and rare natural treasures. You will care about the cultivation potential of your recruits. You will search for advanced cultivation paths (and each path works differently). The game is full of subsystems and hidden knowledge. There are also some things to be aware of. Several of the tutorials have been broken for years. The English-language documentation and wikis only scratch the surface. There are some occasional bugs in actual game play. But overall, this is a positive review, because if you want a B-tier RimWorld base with xianxia tropes, and if you want to search for esoteric knowledge in order to gain ridiculous power, the game delivers. It's a very solid match between mechanics and tropes.
the wiki alone has so much depth that studying it would enable you to start gathering qi irl
