This Game Insists on Itself It is quite astounding what lengths I had to go to just to make this game playable. Let me paint you a picture: Settings & Controls: -Widescreen support is nonexistent. I had to install Python and community-made software, deal with errors, and follow a lengthy tutorial just to make this game display properly in widescreen. There is no developer fix. -Once the widescreen issue was fixed, I encountered the next problem: playing with a keyboard and mouse is horrible. I initially decided to give AC7 a shot after Project Wingman introduced me to arcade jet games and left me wanting more. Project Wingman has great keyboard-and-mouse support, and playing with these peripherals feels satisfying and smooth. “So play with a controller?” Perhaps, but manually tracking your target with a controller is sluggish—even if you manage to bind the right stick so that it controls the camera or your head inside the cockpit. Tracking a target will never feel as good as it does in Project Wingman. Besides, using a controller feels horrible when you want to use your guns for once instead of just spamming missiles. Also, being forced to play a certain way does not make a good impression for a gam So, yet again, I decided to install third-party software to make the mouse-and-keyboard controls feel as close to Project Wingman as possible. After some fiddling, I managed to get fairly close, but the cockpit camera remains restricted. You cannot look upward properly, and it automatically resets itself to the centre of the cockpit when you stop moving it. Furthermore, the speed and general feeling of moving the cockpit camera to track other aircraft do not feel natural. It is as though AC7 wants you to use its automatic target-tracking feature, which, to me, feels both restrictive and braindead. First, you are locked onto a single target. Second, what happens when I need to switch targets in the middle of combat? I have to press a key and hope it jumps to the target I actually want, while the camera snaps around so quickly that it can become disorienting. Also, because the camera is fixed behind your aircraft in third person and centred forward in first person, you cannot look behind yourself unless you press and hold another key. In the middle of a dogfight, that can cost you half a second and force you to remove one of your fingers from the aircraft controls just to look around. That applies to the standard bindings, not the custom ones I created to resemble Project Wingman. On top of that, if you want to bind anything to additional mouse buttons, such as Mouse 4 or Mouse 5, the game refuses to recognise them properly. Once again, you need third-party software to make basic controls work. Overall, the control design is bad and stuck in the past of old Ace Combat games. I assume they have barely changed anything since the first generation of AC console games. -Good luck finding an FOV slider. Both the first- and third-person FOV are horrendous and remind me of games from the early 2000s, when developers wanted you to see as little as possible to compensate for hardware limitations. This game is stuck there too. In first person, it feels as though the pilot has stretched his neck so far forward that you can only see a few buttons and the front section of the aircraft. In third person, the camera sits so close behind the plane that you can barely see what is in front of you because the aircraft fills the entire screen. An FOV mod fixed this, but even Project Wingman has an FOV slider. -The game looks ugly. Even though it was built in Unreal Engine 4 and the aircraft models look great, especially during cinematics, the developers ruined the visuals by applying filters to “create an atmosphere” in almost every mission. -The HUD is enormous and takes up most of the screen. -Forget about trying to get into gun-to-gun dogfights. Aircraft are tiny and barely hittable. Mods have to do the work so that you do not end up using missiles exclusively. Project Wingman did this a thousand times better. Now that we have covered the controls and visuals, we come to the worst thing this game has to offer: the campaign narrative. Campaign/Narrative: -For the first time in my life, I had to mute the dialogue audio in the settings. I am not against radio chatter in games. I like the radio chatter in Project Wingman, including the occasional glazing of my character for being so awesome and the small amount of corny dialogue. AC7, however, becomes so obnoxious with its radio chatter that it is downright distracting. Both the delivery and the actual content of the lines are so completely out of this world that I sometimes question whether real people wrote the dialogue. The dialogue is either ridiculously over the top, with someone desperately trying to hammer home a message, or deliberately rage-inducing. Most of all, it is unbearably cheesy. I do not care whether that is the “essence” of what Ace Combat games have always been. I would rather play COD BO8 with its garbage campaign than listen to this dialogue while fighting a dozen jets. -There are unrelated, cringeworthy cutscenes involving the Scrap Queen that have nothing to do with what your character is experiencing.# -The story as a whole makes no sense. If I had to sum it up, I would say that AC7 and its story insist on themselves. The developers want you to care about their narrative so badly, and they try their absolute hardest to force you to feel something about their messaging: “War is bad.” “Please look at these unrelated cutscenes that are supposed to build the world.” “Please care about these characters.” “Please feel like a complete nutjob during the first part of the game because you were framed for shooting down the—what—president?” I only know these things because I later watched a YouTube video explaining the story. I could not be arsed to sit through it myself. The campaign world also feels completely unrealistic and cartoonish. It feels as though I am playing an anime that happens to feature realistic aircraft. As I said, for the first time in my life, I had to mute the dialogue audio so that I could play the game in peace without constantly being reminded of its ^^^^ narrative. -The characters are all bland, stereotypical, or ridiculously over the top. No human being feels real. I would say the silent protagonist displays more humanity than every speaking character in this game about a world at war. -I do have to admit that the campaign missions themselves are fun. They offer good variety and some cool set pieces and gameplay twists. -The aircraft combat feels fun once the settings have been adjusted and you can ignore the sluggish camera movement—as well as the fact that you need to apply a dozen fixes just to make the game feel remotely as smooth as Project Wingman. If I had to sum up the entire game, I would say that it only continues to exist because there is no real alternative yet. The only proper arcade jet games are Ace Combat and, thankfully, Project Wingman. If Ace Combat had actual competition—and hopefully the developers of Project Wingman make another game—nobody would care about AC. It feels stuck in the past, desperately trying to milk as much nostalgia as possible without making any meaningful attempt to move forward or innovate. The control settings are clunky and sluggish. The story has to be muted. You need mods and third-party software to stop the game from feeling as though it belongs in the past. They are lucky that AC7 has more overall production value and visual fidelity than Project Wingman. Otherwise, Project Wingman would blow it out of the water. Then again, Project Wingman was made by only a handful of developers, yet they still knew how to construct a storyline that could at least be taken seriously and create characters you could care about without shoving a picture of them in your face every time they spoke. I am going back to Project Wingman.

Stick with Trigger and you'll make it
It's not Ace Combat Zero but still awesome, lots of fun and stuff to unlock.
Average japanese game port - no graphics options, changing the controls options doesn't work for mouse at all, and even though I don't have any controllers connected to the computer the game is showing xbox one and PS5 prompts, at the same time, interchangeably.
