A Hat in Time

A Hat in Time base game is a fantastic combination between a cozy game and a platformer. It does have collection mechanics, but they are some of the most enjoyable I've encountered since each level is relatively small in scope. The game is incredibly charming. The art style is consistent and appealing, the humor is endearing, and it is a joy to play. If you like cozy games, this is an excellent one. All the better if you have someone to play cooperatively with. Be forewarned if you are a cozy game player & an achievement hunter one of the DLC's for this game is inclusive of a singleplayer only mode called "Death Wish" that abandons the cozy style of the game entirely and turns a ton of content into something that would be very difficult for the average cozy gamer. And there's a lot of that. I enjoy it quite a lot in terms of satisfaction of completing these challenges, but it brings out one of my complaints with A Hat in Time that normally wouldn't be noticed in the base game - it is honestly quite buggy in many ways. Hooks you are meant to grapple onto have strange angles and won't always let you attach even though the camera force-pans towards them, the camera can behave in really odd ways, you can get stuck out of bounds in some circumstances, there is some de-sync in some of the challenges. That being said, most of this will only ever be apparent in Death Wish and not in the main game because its cozy aspect and relative linearity make these issues not apparent. All this being said, this is probably on the top of my list for games I've enjoyed the most. Play it with your kid. Let your kid play. Play with your SO. Play yourself. It can be fun for anybody.

A really great platformer—one of the best I've ever played. I wish there were more like this.

Do I recommend this game? Peck yeah

I played this game a year after it came out on console. It was one of the only games I genuinely tried to 100% back in the day. Once I did I had waited years for the DLC to release on console and was overjoyed when it finally was. Bought and 100% both DLC the same day. When I was able to fix my PC it was one of the first games I had bought on Steam. It stayed there, collecting digital dust as I played the games I wasn't able to when I was just on console. Until recently, when I decided to let my nostalgia to take the wheel and I booted up the game. I felt like that person so many years ago again. I reexperienced what made me fall in love with this game again. So much so, that I bought the game for two of my other friends after I had fully completed the base game and the DLC just so I could play it with them, something I couldn't do on console. It may be a combination of bias and nostalgia, but for me this game was worth buying 4 times over. The platforming feels great, the characters are very charming, and you can feel the passion these devs put into their work. If you are a fan of 3D platformers I definitely recommend this game to you. I'm not saying this is the best thing to ever grace gaming, but if you want a goofy story of an alien kid with an affinity for absurd hats just trying to go home you should give this game a try.
