About
In A Fox Tale, you will play as Eva as she embarks on her quest to discover if she is the last of her kind.
For the control mechanics, we dedicated a lot of time and effort to creating a physics system that makes traversing the changing environments feel smooth and responsive. You will run, jump, climb, dash and swing your way through the five biomes in the game, each of which introduces its own mechanics to the experience.
Each biome in A Fox Tale is split into small levels, allowing instant retries and little lost progress when coming up short on a jump or falling off a ledge into a pit of spikes.
FEATURES
Fast, responsive movement
Hundreds of handcrafted levels
Optional collectables and challenges
Instant re-spawning
Constantly evolving mechanics
For the level design, each level was initially hand drawn to find the best combinations of mechanics. From there, we build an outline in the game engine, playtest, improve it, and once we are happy, decorate the level and add it to the game. Here's an example of how a level started in the notebook, and how it looked when completed.

Like Celest but Foxes A Fox Tale is a really fun platformer, with snappy, responsive controls reminiscent of Celeste, with some very fun levels employing varied, layered gimmicks to keep up the variety. The game also has a very steady difficulty curve, with the game getting harder as you get better so the game never feels too easy, and if you want a bigger challenge the collectibles will fill that space, giving a much more precise challenge then the rest of the level. Overall, A Fox Tale is a very solid platformer, with good vibes, art, music, and gameplay and very much scratches that precision platforming itch. If you like Celeste, foxes, or just want a relaxed platforming game to spend some time with, give it a shot!
We wishlisted this all the way back in 2021, but then mostly forgot it existed and just kind of assumed it was never gonna come out. Fast forward to today, when it's in our steam wishlist as on sale? Wait, it actually released?? A couple months ago? Heck yeah! Played through the demo, immediately went and bought the game. It feels really good to play, the controls are tight, the level design is really good. It's tough, it does _not_ go easy on you, but NOT in an unfair way. It's more "yeah you got this! give it another go!" than "hahaha you wimp" or something. And that's before getting to the art. Wow, the ART. Literally everything about it is just so well done. The colors, the animations, the little sparklies, it's just beautiful. The first world's level select picture particularly wowed me, lovely purple hues and I really like how the purple tinted the fox there. The dialogue box portraits are also outstanding. But really yeah, the whole game is. You knocked it out of the park with this one. It was so worth the wait. -- Frost

The game is overall very nice, though a bit of my experience is muddied by the fact I've played other platformers with similar mechanics (Namely, Celeste), and had the expectation that some of the mechanics might be similar off of muscle memory (The purple dash-through blocks, for example). There are some parts of the game that I find very nice, like some of the gameplay aspects and the overarching story as well, as well as how some of the collectables work (Yin-Yangs, specifically). I find that some of the collectables are TOO in-your-face and along the main pathway, to a point where it becomes more of a distraction than a side-quest to collect them. While it is understandable to make it this way due to the limited layout of the game, it causes issues in later parts of the game where the UI for collecting the Star Bits will cover parts of the level (Ruins of Elio) and make it difficult to see where you are going. Overall? Game is enjoyable and I would recommend it for casual gameplay! :)
minor gameplay spoliers: this is an absolutely amazing game. the controls are simple and customizable, the music is great, and the art is absolutely beautiful. the movement is clean, and the levels, frustrating at times, are very, very well put together. 5 things to say though: 1. im a little upset that i cant have both joystick and d-pad set to movement. 2. i wish there was a quicker way to skip dialogue (the next three have a video attached) 3. the 3rd yingyang in leviathan laboratory is slightly glitchy. if you dash into the goop while standing on the ground, it doesnt let you collect it. you are required to jump first 4. you can very easily clip inside the blocks that move when you dash 5. im missing the achievement for all stars despite having them all. all levels say i have them all, but the overall file says 30/31 https://youtu.be/CkR0Tx1wI6Y
I hate to say it, but i think this game had been abandoned. What a shame; it had some good ideas.
A short, Celeste-style platformer with a sweet (if simplistic) story. As it involves a lot of diagonal-dashing, it uses analog stick controls and I'm not the biggest fan of that; in a precision platformer, I find that less precise. On account of that, I died more often due to [what felt like] input issues. The game also enjoys a good (and lengthy) Ori-style chase sequence; personally, I'm not a big fan of those either. Unless you get lucky and manage to do one in a few tries, each repetition just saps the sequence of whatever emotional power is intended and turns it into a slog. Nitpicks aside, A Fox Tale is polished and has some interesting level design/mechanics. It also contains a good soundtrack and decent artwork. So while I wouldn't exactly rave about it, I think it's pretty good.
Cool 2 hour platformer to get on sale
It's a really good platformer, something that's hard to find. The pacing is great and the controls are neat.
A very charming, short adventure! The controls feel precise and intuitive and there's a good variety in platforming mechanics to keep it fresh. Getting all the collectibles makes for a good extra challenge, and particularly some of the timed challenges require near perfection, both in terms of trajectory and execution! I played on keyboard only, and key configuration is fully customizable. I added my PC specs, because in the final area performance dropped, at the very end even to the point where I had to downgrade graphics quality to low. In previous areas I had zero performance issues though. Another small issue is that the area music sometimes stops looping, so you're playing in silence while it doesn't feel intentional. But all in all I greatly enjoyed the experience!
