Won't You Be My Laser? is a quirky indie puzzle game developed and published by Chequered Ink Ltd., a studio known for creating compact experiences built around clever mechanics and distinctive themes. At first glance, the game appears to be a simple retro-inspired puzzle title, but beneath its colorful presentation lies a surprisingly engaging challenge centered on timing, observation, and strategic movement. Wrapped in an energetic 1980s-inspired aesthetic, the game embraces neon colors, playful humor, and a lighthearted atmosphere that gives it a unique identity among small-scale puzzle releases. The core gameplay revolves around navigating a series of increasingly complex levels while avoiding deadly laser-guided turrets. Every stage functions as a self-contained puzzle where players must carefully study enemy sightlines, identify safe routes, and manipulate objects within the environment to survive. Crates play a particularly important role, as they can be pushed into strategic positions to block lasers and create temporary paths through otherwise dangerous areas. While the controls remain simple and easy to understand, the solutions often require thoughtful planning and experimentation, especially as new obstacles and hazards are introduced throughout the campaign. One of the game's greatest strengths is how it develops its central mechanic without overcomplicating it. Rather than constantly introducing entirely new systems, the game focuses on extracting maximum value from its laser-avoidance concept. Later levels demand more precise timing, better spatial awareness, and a deeper understanding of how environmental elements interact. This gradual increase in difficulty creates a satisfying learning curve that encourages players to think carefully about every move. Success rarely comes from quick reflexes alone; instead, it depends on reading the level design and understanding how to manipulate each situation to your advantage. The retro presentation contributes significantly to the game's charm. The visuals are bright, colorful, and intentionally exaggerated, capturing the playful spirit of classic arcade culture. Humorous references and over-the-top dialogue reinforce the nostalgic theme without becoming intrusive. The game never takes itself too seriously, and this self-aware attitude helps maintain a fun and approachable tone throughout the experience. Even when puzzles become challenging, the lighthearted presentation prevents frustration from overshadowing the enjoyment of solving each stage. Replayability is enhanced through collectible items and a performance-based rating system. Players are encouraged not only to complete levels but also to optimize their runs by collecting everything available and finishing stages as efficiently as possible. This additional layer of challenge adds value for completionists and puzzle enthusiasts who enjoy refining their strategies. Levels that initially seem straightforward can reveal new optimization opportunities during repeat playthroughs, making the pursuit of perfect scores a rewarding objective. Despite its strengths, Won't You Be My Laser? is a relatively modest production. The game contains a limited number of levels and can be completed in a fairly short amount of time by experienced puzzle players. Those looking for an extensive campaign or a deep narrative experience may find its scope somewhat restricted. Additionally, because nearly every challenge is built around the same central mechanic, enjoyment largely depends on how much a player appreciates line-of-sight puzzles and methodical problem-solving. Fortunately, the level design remains creative enough to keep the concept interesting for most of the journey. The game's accessibility is another positive aspect. Its straightforward controls, clear visual communication, and low system requirements make it easy to pick up and enjoy. There are no unnecessary complications, allowing players to focus entirely on the puzzle-solving experience. This simplicity works in the game's favor, creating a focused experience that understands its strengths and avoids unnecessary distractions. Ultimately, Won't You Be My Laser? succeeds as a charming and cleverly designed indie puzzle game. It combines strategic laser-dodging mechanics, environmental manipulation, collectible objectives, and a humorous retro aesthetic into a cohesive package that remains entertaining from beginning to end. While its short length and limited scope prevent it from reaching the heights of larger puzzle classics, it delivers exactly what it promises: a fun, challenging, and personality-filled adventure that rewards careful thinking and efficient play. For fans of compact puzzle experiences with a nostalgic flair, it is an enjoyable title that offers solid value and plenty of satisfying moments. Rating: 7/10

A fine game for a buck. I was able to finish all of the levels on WASD though I imagine a contoller would be better. My biggest gripe is (and typically I don't care one lick about achievements) is that you can only get cheevo credit for perfecting a level. I'd have just added one in that said "hey, you beat every level". Overall it was a fine way to spend half an hour, maybe more like an hour if you want to perfect most of the levels.
