Witching Hour is solo developer Vincent Lade’s latest release, a story-driven horror about witchcraft and the occult. Unfortunately, this has to be my least favourite amongst the developer’s projects. It is riddled with bugs, odd camera angles, strange unrealistic dialogue, unbelievable characters and horrific character models and shading. I quite liked Vincent’s other titles such as Deathbloom chapter 1 & 2, but sadly, this was an immense letdown, and I cannot recommend it. Pros

Different endings
Interesting premise for the story
Cons

Awful character models and shading
Bizarre camera angles during cutscenes
Dialogue is unrealistic and almost comical
Performance issues, stuttering & frame rate drops

Story
A family of two young sisters and their father move out to Hollow Hills, a rural and abandoned township far from civilisation. Playing as the eldest sister, players learn about the town’s history of witchcraft and the occult by exploring the few locations nearby. The source of the town’s affliction, Lucilla, soon becomes clear. This horror story runs alongside interactions with the family. The father is burdened by sickness and the 8-year-old sister is careless, but begins acting strangely in the new house. Your interactions with your family all impact the final ending. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2836880049 I do not have any issues with the story itself. I liked how it is centred around the comfort of your own home and family members. It is nothing super complex, but had enough mystery involved to keep me curious. The characters themselves though, that is another story.
Gameplay
Gameplay is the usual shtick with horror games. Explore different areas and complete puzzles. Although, the interactions with family members and different endings make it a little bit distinct. Yet, Witching Hour manages these concepts very poorly, creating an unpolished and almost laughable mess. The Bad Unfortunately, there is a lot wrong here that it deserves its own sub header. I understand this is an Indie project by a solo developer and do not expect AAA standards, but this is just too scuffed to be passable. During cutscenes, the camera angle is fixated at the worst possible angle, such as the characters feet or their back. Showing nothing of substance despite a normal conversation happening in the background. Graphics are of a unique style, but shading is horrific. Characters that are lying down appear to be levitating on objects, facial expressions are nonsensical and characters hand movements do not match up with the task they are doing. Not only this, but the lighting for the game is splotchy and areas right in front of my face, I cannot see unless I am almost touching it. I also became physically stuck many times, after exploring off-track. This forced me to restart from the last autosave (no manual save option). I also quit at the beginning of the basement level and when I restarted it, my lantern was nowhere to be found. Despite there being a dozen or so other lanterns lying around, I could not pick any of them up and therefore I had lost my light source for the remainder of the game. This halted my progress, unless I walked around in complete darkness. Continuing on, at one point, a character follows closely behind you and she mimics your every move. Turn around and she is standing right on your behind with the same dull expression that never changes. This was perhaps the scariest moment in the game, alongside the fathers extremely creepy expression and unmatched animations. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2837796904 The characters themselves cannot redeem their buggy exterior as they are just as bad. The family speaks to each other in such a bland way it does not seem realistic, certainly not for a family. Furthermore, their behaviour is just odd. They move into a house with a CHAIN LOCKED door with a CRUCIFIX on it and think nothing of it, even when the chains slowly start breaking off after they experience haunting events. There are no comments besides huh, that’s interesting. Or when the protagonist walks into a house with a creepy doll with a blood-soaked mask, it’s just… ignored? Puzzles Puzzles are generally simple, but feasible. Explore an area, read a clue, go back and use this clue to work out a combination and so forth. The trouble is actually using the mouse to complete the puzzles. Indeed, this was the most complex part. If you press escape, shift tab or alt tab during the middle of a puzzle, the cursor disappears, and the puzzle icon (the eye) lingers forever. If escape is pressed again, the game is not paused, as the character can still move around with the menu screen up. After this happened a few times, I figured out you can just repeatedly click escape, exit the puzzle, look away and then try again and the cursor is back. But…. There are more issues. The cursor does not always match up with the hotspot in the puzzle, such as in jigsaws puzzles. There were many times I knew a puzzle belonged in a certain spot, but it would not stick, not because I was wrong, but because I had to find the hotspot the game allowed me to place it. This made a 10-piece jigsaw puzzle somewhat excruciating.
Visuals & Sound
As previously explained, the gothic style is distinct, but the shading issues are horrifically bad. The game suffers from immense lighting problems, awful character models and questionable camera angles. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2836880243 The sound is better, voice acting is average but the dialogue itself undermines any work the voice actors may have put in.
Technical & Stats

This game was played using keyboard & mouse and with the following PC specs.: Intel i5-9400 2.9 GHz 16GB RAM GeForce RTX 2060 6GB 2560x1440 resolution HDD Windows 10
Playtime: 3.5-5 hours. Controller Recommended? No Replayability value: Supposedly, to retrieve all endings. Performance issues: Yes, constant stuttering and frame rate drops when entering a new area
Conclusion
Putting my thoughts into written text, it has become apparent to me just how many problems there are in Witching Hour. Despite my review being heavily on the negative side, I know the developer can and has done better, as seen in his previous games. With an abundance of issues in the core foundations of gameplay, visual design, characters and performance, I simply cannot recommend it.
I have played quite a few Vincent Lade games, and I am never disappointed. This time around, he takes a different approach, a longer journey, lots of puzzles, and a completely new art style. Here is my honest review: The story is well done, thought out, and interesting. I think the voice acting is OK. Some times it is great, and other times, a bit weak. But that does not take away from the story, just a small, "I wish the voice acting were a bit better" thing. Throughout the journey, you will unravel a cool story, that starts a bit slow in Chapter 1, but Chapter 2 and on, really start to move and kept me hooked the entire time. I was so stuck in, that I had to quit a one point to get some sleep, and I didn't want to stop. I wanted to see what would happen at the end based on my choices. There are 5 ENDINGS! You are going to fun across a lot of puzzles, some extremely simple, and some frustrating at times. My only advice, is to try everything. I ran into one puzzle that I knew the answer to, but the game did not explain how to properly engage with the code lock. So I thought I was doing something wrong, and spent and hour looking for another solution. I finally went back frustrated, tried some different buttons, and had the answer the entire time. That was my 1 and only really frustrating puzzle. Again, not because it was difficult, I just didn't understand what it wanted me to do to interact with the box and lock, After this though, it was smooth sailing! I made game changing choices and went back and got 2 of 5 endings. Once you finish the game, you can go back to different times in the game, you can change your choices and try to get different endings. I like that Vincent does not make you play through the entire game again if you don't want to! All in all, the graphics are great, sounds are on point, the story is compelling and interesting. Yes there are going to be some puzzles that frustrate you, and maybe you are like me and wish he had access to AAA acting, but this is a single Indie Developer pumping out impressive games and an affordable price. If you like horror, puzzles, and a chance for some good replayability, then I would definitely recommend that you jump in and give this one a go. If you take away that extra hour on my playthrough, I would expect you to hit about 5.5 hours to complete, maybe 5 if you figure things out quickly. 6+ if you struggle a bit. Give this game some love!
I wish I knew that partial controller support meant no controller support whatsoever.
With 5 possible endings, your first playthrough is only the beginning! I love all of Vincent's games. The sound design is hauntingly beautiful, the ambiance is Gothic & the controls are easy to use. I was entranced with the story and wanted more. The story had funny moments, heartbreaking moments and well timed moments of horror. Jumpscares weren't too overdone and were well placed. The tension toward the end built up and never stopped. I highly reccomend Witching Hour if you're looking for an visually pleasing game with a great story and challenging puzzles. The best from Vincent Lade so far!
Follow "First Person Exploration and Puzzle Games" for more games like this!
A walking simulator horror game about a family who moves into a haunted home. The game has a number of issues, the most glaring of which is that it's just not fun. Most of the time is spent during the day doing menial chores and extremely simple puzzles. And when the story does progress, it's boring and insubstantial. Other issues: • The game has poor performance, especially in the outdoor areas where my FPS dropped to < 20 (running an RTX 2080 Super) • There's heavy fog and low contrast, making everything hard to see • Almost all of the cutscenes show the back of everyone's heads, presumably to avoid having to learn how to animate talking • At one point my character got stuck on a small incline (think "street curb") and I had to restart from the last checkpoint • The "horror" so far has just been a handful of jump scares • The game takes up a ton of space for a non-AAA title (~30 GB) On the plus side, the game has a full story (which is more than can be said about most horror games), with fully voiced dialog. I really tried to get into this one, but I just couldn't bring myself to finish it. It's not terrible - I wish Steam had a 'neutral' rating because that's what this deserves. However, since it doesn't, I went with "not recommended" because I think only hardcore horror fans will enjoy it.
Though the game is it's developer's most ambitious project yet, I encountered several bugs that were almost game breaking. The game itself is fun with good puzzles and a nice atmosphere. Some pretty good jump scares too. But the game crashed on me and then reloaded me without my lantern making a large section almost unplayable due to how dark it was. The game's ending also bugged out on me and overall a enjoyable game got kinda ruined by some pretty severe bugs. This game would be worth it if it got another update or two.

Also Savegame neu laden.
ENG VER : Another great game from this developer. Interesting story, I hope it will be continued in the future. The visuals are good, but sometimes the game optimization is a bit worse. At times, FPS can drop dramatically in some locations. However, this is not a big disadvantage. I suspect that the Unity engine itself is also somewhat to blame.
