It's alright but not great. It scrathes the Star Fox 64 itch alright, but needs some updates to fix some things. considering it shares many, MANY similarites to Star Fox I will be comparing them in some points. Pros: - It looks okay, nothing stellar but servicable - Like Star Fox it's fully voice acted - The Prowlers (This games Star Wolf stand in) are overall pretty cool - It's like $20. Pretty damn cheap for a alternative to Star Fox if you lack a nintendo console or avoid emulation. Cons: - Your allies die TOO DAMN FAST and most of the time they don't even tell you they're being attacked. 2-3 attacks from an enemy and they're toast meaning you need to babysit them more than in Star Fox. Up their hp a little please and have them signal for help some more. - UTTER LACK OF FLIPS and U-TURNS in free movement mode. Sure you turn significantly faster than StarFoxes Arwings but it really hollows out the whole dogfighting aspect in Free Movement mode which is one of the best things in Starfox and this. - Some stages are EXTREMELY cluttered making targeting and manuvuering a pain in the backside. Not to mention some are pretty much asset flips from Star Fox, which I do understand but some distinct level ideas would have been cool. I may have some hefty negatives but as I said it's a $20 non-nintendo alternative to Star Fox. A few patches to rebalance some things, Fix the dogfighting by adding flips and U-turns and perhaps adding a MP mode and this would be a pretty solid game. A cockpit view would be cool too.

I was hyped seeing an indie dev with a love for SF pick this up. Its hard to play those games on emulators, without strange controls. On a high-end rig, I got about 500FPS. on a weak APU it was struggling to push out 1080p @ 20fps. so any midrange/low-end GPU you'll be fine for 1080p60 play. I get the mixed reviews, in terms of hit-boxes/lazer distance, that is a challenge. Specially the charged up shot, you have to wait such a long time to fire, meanwhile you could have shot regular lazers at other enemies. the firing mechanism could be tightened with an update, and/or weapon upgrades (haven't gotten that far yet), only 4 levels deep. Overall, a beautiful game, hit the nostalgia spot, cheaper than going out to the movies, good for a few hours of fun.
I love this game so far and will come back to add more but there are some issues. This was clearly made for controler only, this is a problem for mouse and key board users as there are no sensitivity options which are sorely needed and keybinding options as for some people, some combinations just wont work. The stages feel too fast, I would prefer they were drawn out more (more distance) or slower to get through with more enemies then feeling squished together and having to rush. The 'all range mode' or whatever they call it in this game feels wrong somehow but I cant put my finger on it yet.
I wanted to like this game, and I really want to support the devs here. Firs thing first, the game is really beautiful, stylish, and I love the presentation and the characters. The branching levels make it great for replay value. My issue is that the hit boxes and range of your wepons removes a lot of the enjoyment and adds a lot of frustration. Often, there are too many enemies on screen, and you cannot seem to hit any because your laser can only travel so far. And since the game is primarily about shooting lasers and avoiding lasers, it seems that the odds are unfairly stacked against you as you can only do so much shooting and hit so many enemies. And when your pals need support, you have like very few seconds to maneouver around the terrain and get a lock on the enemy and hope you can actually reach them before your pal needs to exit the stage. Again, I want to love it, but as of this writing, it is frustrating to fight against the game.
It's Star Fox 64 with a fresh coat of paint, but also just a little bit worse on every angle. Still gets a thumbs up for me due to the entry price being low, but there's a bunch of tweaks needed to improve it. Range on the weapons is insanely short, and the boost / brake are anemic. Your allies are flying ships made out of paper mâché while hordes of enemies consistently flood the screen, firing at you before they're in range. Bosses either feel far too easy, or like you're dealing zero damage. Characterization is weak: Bosses are voiced well but not given names, your allies spout the same lines at the end of every mission, and the Star Wolf stand-ins are forgettable. However, most of these problems are fixable with a patch - and the core game here is as good as this game's spiritual predecessor has always been. The real disappointment is just that it's slightly worse all around, rather than improving on the original.
A serviceable homage to Star Fox 64, though not terribly original and feels undertuned in some places. I like the characters and the voice acting. The graphics can be quite pretty, very colorful cartoon cel-shaded visuals. And it does feel good to play once you get the hang of it. This game is quite noticeably harder than the game that inspired it. I have nothing against a challenge, but I do wonder how much of the challenge was deliberate on the designers' part vs. how much stuff was under-tuned. For example, your default basic blasters feel pathetically weak, even tiny mook enemies or item crates feel really tanky with these things. You have to fully upgrade your blasters in order to feel like you're doing noticeable damage against anything, and you're also able to lose these blasters if you take too many hits. So in most cases you're better off relying on your lock-on charge shots which are a separate button, and it feels like you basically have to be right up against an enemy's ass to lock onto it. Stages have separate completion objectives for medals and ribbons - medals are obtained by collecting four Donkey Kong Country-style letter medallions in the level whereas ribbons are obtained by shooting down the level's score quota. And you need to master bank-turning by rolling your ship in order to maneuver better. So those are things I can safely say are intentionally more challenging. But in addition to the weak default blasters there's also things like enemies being more tanky and persistently chasing you in all-range levels, and also having lasers that make you lose altitude which they are quite accurate with. On top of that you have no easy evasion maneuvers like somersaults or u-turns. And teammates don't really let you know when an enemy is chewing them up so they have a tendency to die rather quickly. The levels feel like they adhere to the source inspiration material of Star Fox 64 a bit too closely. You have a map with all the different levels and all the same story beats and level gimmicks happen on the exact same spots as they do in SF64, even including a rotating base mission and the introduction of a rival team (which occur on the same levels). Could've been a bit more imaginative in its presentation and story. But overall, it's decent, if a bit clunky. Get it if you like Star Fox and don't mind a harder game.
Wild Blue Skies is 100% a Star Fox 64 Clone in the best way. Being a veteran of the 64 era I felt right at home blasting my way through each level on my first play through. I feel like the negative reviews for this game are from people missing the point of this title. This is a great running game that is not trying to hide what it is and doing so for $15 on the PC. Can't really go wrong here. So for all the Nintendo diehards out there, please by all means spend the $450 for a Switch 2 and another $60 for the remake of Star Fox. I'll gladly spend the fraction of that and play this tile for the exact same game play. Now for the devs who read these reviews. This game is great, really nails the Star Fox 64 right on the nostalgia head. But I wish this game had three major features to really be able to stand as it's own title. (1) Co-op mission mode would be awesome! You already have a squad of (4) in each mission, I wish one NPC could be a playable character and be able to play online co-op or split screen with a friend. Would be something Star Fox has never done before and I think this would be a great title to make that happen. (2) Mission lengths are wayy to short. This was always my gripe with the OG Star Fox 64 as well. I just feel like the mission is over when it just starts getting good! (3) Multiplayer (Four Player Vs Mode). Arena Death Match just like the OG, and some other creative 4 player game modes would be great to see as well with this title.
I absolutely love how replayable Wild Blue Skies is! I jumped in thinking I could beat the game first playthrough or at least have checkpoints but nope. Makes me want to play over and over again just to beat the game on the easiest difficulty path haha! Reminds me of when I played Star fox/64 all those years ago, But for some reason feels more challenging/unforgiving? Like I had to relearn how your ship controls, map layout, how to take out each boss, find secret paths. Its amazing to have a very similar On-rail Arcady shooter that feels new to me! Also of course I absolutely adore all the characters/simple animations and voice lines! Definitely recommend, especially for the price!~
