I know that I tag this as not recommended, but game Devs please dont take this as discouragement. To be blunt: this is NOT a game. It is a concept with working art. The idea is good. There is not a lot of options for western survival with co op. I really, really do hope this game goes somewhere and does not get abandoned like my first love, Outlaws of the old West. Hence why I am not asking for refunds for the 2 game purchases I made. I hope my money goes to furthering the development. Now as to why I say do not spend money unless you really want to support the devs in the current stage of the game. It is almost impossible to play. The graphics will pulse between full screen and this torn/1/4 view. Super annoying. The horse steering is basically WWI tank with nothing short of a 6 mile turning radius and getting stuck on a pebble. Yet somehow if you dont keep the horse perfectly straight while running it will turn on a dime? There is only 1 quest at this time that takes 5-6 minutes (when not glitching). The building process is um... "there". In general there is just a LOT of jank. I know this can be worked out over time, but after playing for a couple hours I feel like I can definitively say this should not have been released to the general public at this time.

Western Rye — The Good, The Bad & The Ugly Early Access Review in Progress — 2.7 Hours Western Rye is being developed by two brothers without external funding, and there is no mistaking that this is Early Access. I am keeping that firmly in mind, but Early Access does not mean everything gets a free pass. I am judging the game for what it is right now, and this review will change as I spend more time with it. I am also keeping this spoiler-free. THE GOOD The world grabbed me immediately. The Monument Valley-inspired landscape, ranches, settlements, livestock, weather, music, and architecture create a convincing Western atmosphere. More importantly, I actually want to explore it. I keep seeing things in the distance and wondering whether I can get there. It does not feel like a generic survival game with cowboy hats added afterward. Horseback riding has also been better than I expected. I had seen complaints about the controls, but normal riding and turning feel smooth and responsive. Terrain traversal has some problems, but the basic riding feels good. The writing may be my biggest surprise. Characters have distinct personalities rather than feeling like human-shaped quest markers, and dialogue lets me be curious, cooperative, skeptical, or confrontational instead of giving me three versions of "yes." Without spoiling anything, I already want to know more about this world. The homestead is where the game really clicked. I wanted a ranch instead of the usual survival-game box, and the modular building system let me make one. Wall previews showing INSIDE and OUTSIDE are particularly useful, and there are enough pieces available that my design keeps evolving as I build. Gathering also ties nicely into survival. While looking for lumber I found juniper berries for food and water and juniper bark for water purification. I like leaving for one resource and returning having accomplished several things. THE BAD The UI needs work. Light text can disappear against the bright environment, dialogue placement is awkward on ultrawide, searched objects can retain their search indicators, and sometimes the interface glitches badly enough that I simply have to wait for it to become usable again. There are several smaller QoL problems too. The opening cinematic cannot currently be skipped when relaunching, and there is no obvious Continue or Load option. "Start Single Player" correctly resumed my save, but did cause a brief moment of panic. Crafting needs batch controls. Eighteen foundations require eighteen clicks of Craft Item, and chopping requires an individual click for every hatchet swing. Neither adds difficulty, just repetitive input. Harvesting also needs better feedback. Loose wood, scrub, skeletal trees, and even some normal-looking trees cannot be harvested. I hit one tree around thirty times before accepting that it apparently had diplomatic immunity. Building placement has the same communication problem. An invalid piece turns red but does not explain whether terrain, obstruction, support, or something else is preventing placement. Horseback riding is good until small pieces of terrain completely stop the horse, and I have not found a conventional jump. There is also no pause in single player, and looting opens a full-screen inventory while the world continues around me. Melee is currently the weakest core mechanic. Punches feel slow, axe swings imprecise, and hits lack convincing sound, reaction, and weight. THE UGLY I experienced severe graphical corruption on Epic settings during a weather change, with large portions of the screen stretching and smearing badly enough to interfere with play. Switching to High immediately stopped the worst of it, although I have seen some flashing since. I cannot say exactly which setting caused it. More concerningly, the game later reverted itself back to Epic after I had deliberately changed it to High. I have changed it again and will see whether it persists. I also had three demolished foundations fall through the terrain and disappear. Foundations are supposed to become recoverable items when demolished, and I have successfully recovered others, so this bug directly cost me resources. THE DERP Character creation initially confused me because the main menu is also essentially the character creator and multiplayer lobby. I expected Start Single Player to take me into character creation before realizing I was already standing in it. It works fine once understood, but could be communicated better. WHERE I AM AFTER 2.7 HOURS If I listed all of the problems without context, I could probably make Western Rye sound terrible. The UI is rough, melee needs work, crafting involves too much clicking, I have encountered graphical problems, settings have not always saved, and the ground has literally eaten pieces of my house. The problem with that conclusion is that I am having a tremendous amount of fun. I want to explore the world. I want to learn more about the characters. I like riding around, and I went out for enough wood to build a basic house only to spend a large part of the session designing a two-story Western ranch because I cared what it looked like. The problems need work, but right now they feel like problems getting in the way of a game I enjoy rather than reasons I do not enjoy the game. At only 2.7 hours, this is nowhere near a final verdict. Anyone buying now should understand that the Early Access label is very real. If bugs, unfinished interfaces, and missing QoL features bother you, I would wait. For me, I do not regret buying it this early. It is rough, unfinished, occasionally frustrating, surprisingly charming, and so far I am having a great time. The house is not finished. Neither is the game. But the foundation is dead on.
Take my early thoughts with a grain of salt, I am an overly positive person when it comes to early access! I will try to be honest without being brutal, because I like the foundation a lot here! So already played a couple hours, and actually did release a video for it on youtube if you want to check it out. Shameless plug: https://youtu.be/vq-LZn1qJWQ I love early access games, this one is definitely early access. The western setting is done well, the player movement is decent, the enemies are a your typical early access zombies, and the building is your typical building mechanic, build the item, place it on your hotbar and place the item. The placement is ok, but there are some strange clipping and rotation issues. The Good: -Atmosphere and music is good, feels like a western adventure! -A bit of story, that seems interesting. Zombies, nefarious humans, and some mystery. -You can build your own base, get animals, fish, hunt, and fight zombies. -Interesting map and built world, and the map seems large! The needs work: -Movement needs a bit of refinement, the melee combat is a bit clunky, but works ok. -The world looks cool, but does seem a bit hollow, buildings seem like a decent placed shell, but has no depth or weight to it (if that makes sense) -character creator needed, there are some light customization options, but could use a touch up and a few more options. -missions are a bit vague, the first building mission says build 16 pieces, but not which ones, then build 8 more, but no clue which ones, and finally place the items.... I placed all the items and could not finish the base so I made a really makeshift ugly base as I frantically placed items hoping it would work. It also did not tell you how much wood to gather the second time. -Could use a quick tutorial before sending you to your first mission and fight.
This game is honestly unplayable right now. The controls barely work, and there are basic interactions that simply don't function. For example, if my friend picks something up, I can't even pick it up afterward myself. Myself and three friends all bought this game specifically so we could play together, and we can't even do that because the game is so broken. What's the point of buying a multiplayer game if you can't actually play it with your friends? We tried to make it work, but there are so many bugs and broken mechanics that it's more frustrating than fun. This game needs some serious fixing before it's worth recommending to anyone. We cant even set our controls to anything other than what they have available. The devs have 2 hours to fix these problems or myself and my friends will be getting refunds. Save your money until the developers actually fix the game.
Sadly I don't recommend this game, The game concept is fine and it felt ok but things that were redflag right from the start. 1 . The tutorial/quests text you can hardly read there needs to be a backsplash for the text so people whom have eye sight issue can read the text. 2 . The placement of weapons, When holding pistols and rilfes it just looks weird/strange and cheap. 3 . Riding a Horse I couldn't even turn the thing (not sure if this was a bug or is just a me issue but it just wouldn't turn, I tried other horses and same thing) 4 . The Npc text boxes seem cheap and nasty no thought or love put into them, like an old style paper backsplash to make you feel like your in a western would have been good. I know this is EA, and I understand this is indie devs, and I'm normally happy to spend money to support indie devs but I have been burnt way to many times, and this screams one of those times, I hope to god I'm wrong and all this is fixed, because the concept of the game feels good but it just doesn't feel good enough for me to buy and keep.
Cool concept, I just don’t believe it’s worth the price yet. Right from the start, the game has you look for a hatchet, which was surprisingly difficult to find. The looting system definitely needs some polishing—a buddy and I ran around for a dumb amount of time just trying to find this one item. That being said, the visuals, movement, and combat are all very appealing. At times, it almost gave me a Red Dead Redemption feel, and I really have to applaud the game for that. My biggest issue is that after completing objectives, you’re often still left feeling confused and unrewarded. There’s definitely potential here, but I think the game needs more time and polish before it feels worth the current price. I’ll be keeping an eye on it and hoping things continue to improve. I genuinely wish the developers and the game the best of luck!
A very short review - the game is in the worst possible state. It's a joke. I played like 5 min and textures went crazy. I couldn't quit because the quit is on credits. Kids playing with unreal engine. I've done better games while learning 3d engines. I'm requesting a refund. This kind of game should not be allowed to be sold.
I've played a lot of Early Access games and I know there are issues going in so let me word this in a way thats helpful for the Dev's and anyone wanting to try the game. Pros: Crafting is very deep. You start with your own homestead and horse. Gun play is fun, guns are decent enough. Horses are very pretty and handle well. Building is easy and resource friendly. Farming is nice and cooking is good. The towns look real , buildings look very period. Landscape looks awesome, mining seems fun as well. CONS: Altho the story line seems fun there is no clean way to return to a spot once you die.NEEDS A DEATH MARKET ON THE MAP. LOOT BAGS DO NOT RESPAWN, if you die you drop everything you have with no way to get it back. Need a death marker ON THE GROUND to say "HEY...HERE IS YOUR STUFF" There is not clear way to know what you need to complete crafting quest. Game needs more explanation of how to get items. You need nails? The store has them but wait...you cant buy them ! How do i craft them? no one knows. Game is good but game needs work. Not worth the price AT THIS TIME ! I have high hopes that they will address these issues , today I cant recommend this game to a friend until the above issues have been at least made better. I like the game , its not worth what i paid. I would gladly change my recommend to yes once they fix these issues :)
Played for an Hour and i enjoyed myself. Rough around the edges, yes but it is in early access and i hope the devs continue updating the game. (to the devss) please do not let the negative reviews keep you from flourishing.
This game is unenjoyable at this stage. I love survival games, I was really intriged by the theme, I know it's very early access, but holy ... other devs did so much better in releasing their game into early access. The combat is made terribly. When you die you lose everything (!!!) and your stuff from the inventory and the toolbar is nowhere to find. Even your bag for expanding your inventory is gone. Your guns are gone. Everything is just gone! Multiplayer is crashing all the time in midgame. I died, my girls game crashed. So no chance for the riviving, nothing! There is no feedback button or form or anything. Also the loading times are ridiculous. By the time of loading the game like 3 times because of the crashes, and just try it out a little bit, the two hours for refunding are over.
