Wake is a bit of a perplexing game - a sound, interesting core idea wrapped in layers of unpleasant presentation, mind-boggling controls, and some of the most obtuse menu design I've seen in some time. The premise of the gameplay is interesting: you're trapped aboard a sinking vessel and must use a metroidvania-style map to navigate your way off the ship. Certain elements in each room are randomized to keep playthroughs unique. However, the default controls are head-scratchingly odd and the numerous post-processing filters make the entire game window look like it's experiencing some form of video driver corruption. I had multiple instances where a new menu/scene would just straight up fail to display and leave me at a black screen instead. It's a shame, because if even a few hours were spent cleaning up the presentation, menus, and controls, you'd probably have a pretty competent little game here. As it is, it's both hard to play and hard to recommend. Find more reviews and recommendations on my Steam Curator page, Indie Infinitesimal: https://store.steampowered.com/curator/41769714/
Wake is a junky retro pixel platformer with a really ugly filter over the fixed resolution graphics. The game options are terrible, the graphic assets are very low quality (despite this being some kind of remaster). The game picks up HOTAS controls and doesn't let you reconfigure them, so if you play flight sims, you can't play this. And I'm okay with that. $7 for retro pixel rubbish is too much to pay, and this is very low quality even compared to the thousands of shovelware pixel platformers out there.
Pure garbage.
Eyes full of soap when you look at this. Terrible control and irrational UX.
Tags: Platformer - Metroidvania Additional Tags: Delete Local Content & Remove from Library TLDR: Hard to navigate. Dark. Rooms fill in water which unlocks new screens. Quickly became a maze navigation game which I dislike. Lacked a plot hook or a good mechanic to keep game interesting. The game has a complicated control scheme that feels unsatisfying to use, the menus are laggy, the game does not fullscreen correctly and leaves windows toolbar at the bottom and windows cursor floating around, there is a crazy amount of grainyness to the visuals. This is more of a maze than a platformer, water fills up as whatever submarine thing you are in is capsizing, i guess, which makes it possible to reach certain areas that were innaccessible over time. The game gives a map but I couldnt makes heads or tails of what represented what and it did not help me with navigation. I could not open any containers even though I pressed all the controllers button and game tells me to open them. The game took a bunch of screenshots instead. Eventually I got in a place with hurts in it, and the game just flashed red light all over the screen I couldnt see anything anymore and I died. At that point I decided I had seen enough. Also I HATE MAZES, why does every uninspired hack has to build their lack of content around a maze. I am not a rat and you are not a scientist
This is an extraordinarily bad game. Like this developer's other contribution Lunnye Devitsy, it looks awful, plays awfully, and wastes the player's time with frustrating controls and obscure map design. You will live a slightly happier life if you never install this.
