Weapons have a pretty good feel to it which surprised me in a positive way! Most weapons have multiple ammo types and they differ from each other in ways, that allows for multiple playstyles and personal preferense. It is also pretty fun to customise your drillship and the enemies are interesting. And in runs on Linux :3 All in all, for that price point, definitively recommend! Nyuu <3
honestly the game just needs better design, like mate i go to break the 2nd "laser" and i got assulted by i cant even count how many tanks any enemies that shred my armor like its paper, the difficulty in this game is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ absurd and the devs need to learn how to make a balanced game, throwing around 10 "heavy" full auto robots at someone when they have 3 tank backups covered in guns, then on top of that because of the maps layout only the on the left side front compartment can actually fight back meaning 90% of my defences only seem to work after the entire first compartment is destroyed, lovely game fix your ♥♥♥♥ devs

It took me and my friend a while until we learned the ropes, but now i can say it's a beautiful game with a very unique aesthetic and great progression! Excited to finish the story.
On the Discord and Announcements the devs show off the fantastic things they are totally going to put in the game... someday. Nothing added to what we can play since December 2024. Before that, July. The stars of those updates were a new enemy type and decorative interior furniture. The new island and vehicles teased since 2023 are not in the playable game. How is it aside from slow update progress? Dull. The volcanic eruptions that force you to submerge the ship or have it destroyed happen on an annoyingly short cycle. While submerged, only the guy in the pilot seat has anything to do, and that's just moving an icon around a map to gobble up more resources. The gameplay is ok, but gets repetitive and unfulfilling.
There's not many steampunk themed games as ambitious and immersive out there, so after reading the interesting "drillship" idea of this one, I decided to jump into it. And after literally devouring it in 24 hours played in less than a week, I have to say that I'm definitely satisfied with my experience. This is an early access indie game, and a quite ambitious one, so of course there's some jankiness to expect. But despite of its few minor annoyances (like destroying an enemy drillship, and just when I was going to scavenge the remains another one spawned in place, erasing all the loot, like, wtf), this is a pretty solid game that managed to keep me really hooked. The execution of the idea (managing, improving and expanding a drillship, equipping it with weapons and diverse modules to unlock better equipment, plus being able to reach further underground) is really well done. Even the enemies (steampunk/teslapunk robots) ended having more personality than I anticipated (what's going on with the tanks sounds lmao), and their variety actually felt well thought of. You can end up with a really long drillship full of heavy weaponry, or go with a more compact one with fewer but strategically located efficient weapons. Of course, greedy me, finished the game with a moving fortress, and it was really awesome. Combat is nothing especially complicated, but again, this game excels with its simple approach: different kinds of enemy specializations, different types of actual steampunk and teslapunk looking weapons with a few ammo variations to let you approach every combat situation as you consider (though in the late game there's only one viable way to destroy tesla towers, that block every single incoming projectile except bullets), and there's some real satisfaction in breaching into an enemy drillship, be it force-bruting your way into it via demolishing its defenses, or sneaking into it and destroying it from the inside. Pretty epic, I must say. Personally, the only negative point I can see is how exploration feels bland and boring, since the island repeats the very same formula for the different zones, just changing resources and the level of abandoned tech you need to advance. The "hidden" loot in abandoned villages and places is pretty simple and uninspired, just breaching into a building's cellar, then finding the same crates with one or two useful thingies. And the landscape doesn't offer anything special either. But yeah, that's about it, and considering how well developed the main mechanics and ideas of the game are, I'm not even complaining about this part to be honest. Devs focused their efforts in the main formula, and it feels awesome. Some parts of the game feel "rustic", but that reminds me of some old indie legends like Mount & Blade: Warband, where everything was as janky as one could imagine, but the main idea, atmosphere, and the core gameplay formula were just glorious. It's kind of similar here with Volcanoids. So, yeah, I totally recommend this game. And personally, I'll be following this dev team from now on, because having a good original idea, then executing it well and with good taste, aren't two things we see everyday nowadays unfortunately. Plus sign me in for any immersive steampunk game, anytime. This makes me think about how fun would be to play a game like this one, but managing a ship, a submarine, or even a flying machine in a similar way. Well done, Volcanoid team.
You know how a lot of games always have a great concept on paper, but when developed they always have some flaw about them that really hinders the enjoyment? Something weird about the controls, a buggy physics engine, terrible writing or DLCs no communications from the devs etc? Volcanoids is a game that somehow manages to be a great concept, and execute this concept just about flawlessly without any of the usual issues you might expect it to have. Sure, it might take a bit to get the hang of things, but there is an in-depth tutorial, an in-game guidebook with information, adjustable difficulty settings, you name it! The developers (as of 2025) are also actively sharing their progress on new updates publicly, and involve the community with suggestions. Overall, this is a great game that offers about 12 hours of gameplay during your first run through the story so far (AS OF 2025, SUBJECT TO CHANGE) with enticing mechanics, good gunplay and a lot of drillship customization!
Not abandoned, despite what people are claiming.
no update since 2024.
This has potential but falls flat, its game play isn't balanced, inventory is too small (36 slots), item stacking amount sucks, Armor breaks so fast its barely useful, combat is boring, repetitive, and frustrating. You only have 36 inventory spots that are not separate from your hot bar and usable items including ammo form stacks that don't hold enough. If you are raiding anything 2 star and higher, you have to have no less then 20 grenades, that's four slots gone. Bringing armor that breaks every few shots? Well it stacks to 5 so hopefully you wont get shot too much because health kits also only stacks to 5. The game dose provide a really cool spread of weapons, too bad you cant bring more then 3 along or else them and the ammo will fill up your inventory. This is my biggest gripe, whenever I decide to commit a drill raid, I have to spend 10 minutes crafting everything i need to kill it based on what type it is to then walk over and dodge bullets while throwing grenades until I'm out of them. The whole time I'm being lazer beamed by the never ending droves of bots (this isn't so bad at the start but gets bad post lazer 1). The Ai is bad, combat is bad, game loop is bad, and the world is very empty. IDK anything about these developers but this game is a great concept but horrible execution, its in beta/ early access?? not finished is the point. I hope the game gets better going forward but I don't expect anything above ok. at the time of this review not work the price.
DO NOT BUY. Abandoned trash in EA since forever
