I don't know how much good a review does if you can't even buy it anymore but this really is one of the greatest single player FPS of all time. I would absolutely say on par with Half-Life 1. It is insane to me it doesn't get more recognition. I discovered it from a coincidence from a coincidence. I was mapping for Half-Life 1 and got a tutorial for mapping for UnrealEd (Unreal Editor, the map editor for this engine) so I got the first Unreal Tournament to map in. Then when I saw there was a singleplayer Unreal game that predated it, I bought it just because it looked cool. Little did I know this is actually one of the most seminal and historic FPS in video game history lol. It feels an entire step above Quake which predates it by only 2 years. Like as big a jump that Half-Life 1 seemed from Quake. Plus the vibes are super unique and alien. The monsters are pretty brutal honestly, although I did my first playthrough on the hardest difficulty (havent finished yet, to be clear) and maybe that speeds up projectile speed a lot. Because it is HARD to dodge. And just because I'm a nerd, I absolutely love this game engine. Something about the lighting specifically activates the warm comfy part of my brain that used to be activated in the early 2000s by Christmas lights. I really just enjoy being in this game because of that. It gives it a very comfy feel, the same feel that GoldSrc has for me.

Unreal is one of the most masterfully designed games of all time. Beating Half Life to the punch by a couple of months, Unreal was one of the first FPS games to use scripted set pieces for its storytelling. While not quite reaching the same frenetic and visceral pacing of Half Life, what Unreal has over it's future competitor is its gunplay and combat encounters. Every gun in this game is a blast to use and the enemies are designed to be forces to reckon with. Gone were the days of corridors filled with enemies to be exterminated, this and Half Life ushered in a design philosphy of tense white knuckle battles with enemies who are both challenging and fun to fight. I'd reasonably call Unreal a masterpiece and I'd recommend everyone play it. That is: if you were able to buy the damn game. You see, the days of Epic being a game developer who pushed the envelope with every title are long gone. We live in a dystopian hell world where, because of the company's unfathomable lucky break with Fortnite, they seem to be reluctant to let you actually acquire the games that made them into the company they are now. While this may not matter to some, Unreal and its spin off Unreal Tournament series are truly masterworks that withstand the test of time and deserved to be played and loved. Do yourself a favor and pirate a copy of these fantastic games, find a fan server for the Tournament entries, and get ready to exerience FPS nirvana.
Superb and unreal games. Even after 28 years, the music from *Unreal Gold* and *Unreal Tournament* stays with me. I also remember the stunning new graphics of that time: the emerald-green water, the blue-beam weapon, and the reflections on the walls. Delisting the *Unreal* game series was a crime. Note: The images on the game's page show graphics that look worse than what you actually see while playing. This isn't just nostalgia talking; I’ve played the game recently.
