This game rules. When I got it I assumed it would be just a fun tiny contained experience, I was kinda wrong! The depth being built into game feel so well structured and it keeps the fun of Spore's cell stage while doing it. Ive only seen one milestone reached after purchase but they literally accomplished 3x as much as they set out and have expanded to multicellular! Not only a gem in the rough for cheap, but this is a genuine passion project with a team that knows what feels good in these evolution sims.

Thrive is an ambitious evolutionary simulation that explores life from its earliest microscopic beginnings rather than treating evolution as a conventional upgrade system. Developed and published by Revolutionary Games Studio, it places players in control of a primitive organism living on an alien world where survival depends on acquiring resources, managing cellular processes, reproducing, and adapting to environmental pressures. The game remains in Early Access, so its grand vision is considerably larger than its currently finished content, but what is already available provides a fascinating mixture of biology, simulation, survival, and sandbox experimentation. The Microbe Stage forms the heart of the experience and is easily its most developed component. Players guide a microscopic organism through aquatic environments while searching for compounds necessary for energy, growth, and reproduction. Other organisms share the ecosystem, creating competition for resources while also functioning as potential predators or prey. The basic act of swimming around and collecting materials is approachable, but beneath that simple interaction lies a surprisingly elaborate biological simulation. Energy management is especially important because inefficient cellular designs can struggle even when they appear powerful on paper. The species editor gives Thrive much of its personality and strategic depth. Players can redesign their organism between generations using numerous cellular components with different biological purposes. Parts associated with energy production, photosynthesis, movement, defense, digestion, and offensive behavior allow radically different survival strategies. Building a faster predator is possible, but increased mobility and additional structures come with metabolic costs. Likewise, a heavily protected cell may survive attacks more effectively while sacrificing speed or efficiency. The strongest designs are therefore not necessarily the most complicated ones; they are the organisms best adapted to the conditions surrounding them. Different metabolic approaches make experimentation particularly rewarding. A species can develop around photosynthesis, predation, iron processing, hydrogen sulfide utilization, or combinations of several methods. This allows players to approach survival from very different directions instead of following one ideal evolutionary route. Endosymbiosis adds another intriguing layer by allowing relationships with other organisms to contribute to cellular development. Freebuild mode complements the main progression by providing greater freedom to test unusual biological designs without being constrained by the normal evolutionary process. The surrounding ecosystem is not static either. Other species can mutate and change as generations pass, meaning a harmless neighbor may eventually become a competitor or predator. Population statistics and related information help players understand whether their species is actually thriving beyond the survival of the individual organism currently under direct control. This broader perspective is important because Thrive is fundamentally concerned with species survival rather than simply keeping one creature alive. Environmental shifts can also disrupt established strategies, forcing players to reconsider designs that previously worked well. Environmental variety reinforces this emphasis on adaptation. Different regions offer distinct conditions, resources, temperatures, and ecological pressures, while larger events can dramatically affect the planet. Global cooling, impacts, and other changes can upset established ecosystems. A successful organism can suddenly find itself poorly suited to a transformed environment. This uncertainty prevents evolution from feeling like a straightforward march toward increasingly powerful upgrades and instead emphasizes specialization, compromise, and adaptation. Progression toward more complex life provides the game's broader objective. Players can eventually develop increasingly sophisticated cellular structures, become eukaryotic, form cell colonies, and move toward multicellular organisms. The Multicellular Stage introduces the concept of designing an organism from specialized cells, hinting at how much larger Thrive is intended to become. However, this is also where its Early Access nature becomes particularly noticeable. The Microbe Stage has substantial mechanical depth, while later stages are much less complete. The planned journey toward complex creatures, societies, technology, and eventually spacefaring civilizations should therefore be viewed as a long-term development goal rather than representative of the complete current experience. Visually, Thrive favors functional scientific clarity over elaborate spectacle. Its microscopic environments communicate compounds, organisms, cellular structures, and hazards effectively, while the editor presents a large amount of information without completely overwhelming the player. There is still a meaningful learning curve. Understanding metabolism, cellular components, environmental conditions, population behavior, and resource requirements takes time, particularly for players without a background in biology. The tutorial helps with the fundamentals, but experimentation and occasional failure remain important parts of learning the systems. Replayability is one of the game's stronger qualities because there is no requirement to evolve along precisely the same path each time. One playthrough might produce an aggressive predator, while another could focus on photosynthesis, defensive adaptations, unusual chemical resources, or metabolic efficiency. Dynamic competitors and environmental conditions further reduce the likelihood that every attempt will develop identically. Steam Workshop support also fits naturally with a simulation built around experimentation and community involvement. Steam Deck compatibility is officially categorized as Playable rather than fully Verified. Performance with the default graphics configuration is considered suitable, and the game can run successfully on SteamOS. However, handheld players should expect compromises. Some functionality is not fully accessible through the default controller configuration, touchscreen interaction or a community controller layout may occasionally be useful, and text entry can require manually opening the virtual keyboard. Some interface text may also appear small, while certain prompts can display keyboard, mouse, or non-Steam Deck controller icons. It is therefore functional on the Deck, but the experience is less seamless than a fully optimized handheld release. Overall, Thrive is already an unusually thoughtful simulation despite being far from realizing its complete vision. Its greatest achievement is making evolution feel like an ecological process governed by trade-offs rather than a linear sequence of improvements. The detailed Microbe Stage, extensive cellular customization, changing ecosystem, varied metabolic strategies, and emphasis on adaptation provide plenty for simulation enthusiasts to explore. Its main weakness is simply that its enormous promised scope extends well beyond what is currently finished. Judged on the playable experience rather than future ambitions, it remains a distinctive and intellectually engaging evolutionary sandbox with considerable potential. Rating: 8/10
