Very nice, short dive into philosophy with a relatable story.
Well, wasn't that @#$%@$# depressing. Still, I loved this little 'game' for some reason. Really good voice acting. $2.50 is a bit much though. Better get it on sale.
Summary
A short narrative game exploring the philosophical concept of thing-in-itself represented using relationships. Pros + Interesting + Great presentation
Overview
Thing-in-Itself is a short narrative game focusing on the philosophical concept by Kant called thing-in-itself as the name of the game suggests and explores this concept deeper using relationships to represent the idea. The game does a pretty good job of explaining the concept of thing-in-itself along with its presentation using relationships as the medium, showing just how difficult it is for people to truly understand each other as we perceive things very differently to one another. It is very dialogue heavy as a narrative game and there are multiple choices in dialogues while you are also able to follow or ignore what you're meant to do to an extent or you won't be able to progress, though it wouldn't change the ending and only change conversations slightly. Achievements aren't difficult to complete, just check what you need to do and a few playthroughs may be needed to get them all. I really enjoyed this game, I think it definitely served it's purpose of being thought provoking, even as it did leave me with more questions than answers - though that's typical for a philosophical game :) In terms of reflecting the concept of a thing-in-itself, against the dynamic of a relationship, of understanding someone else? and the negotiation of the fact? if that interests you even just a little, i'd definitely recommend giving the game a whirl, a lovely short game that i think is worth the try :)
The game is great if you want a short game to just tag along in the story, (truly a piece of art,) - I think its safe to say, The game truly is A THING IN ITSELF...
Thing-in-itself is a short game about love abruptly going sour. The voice acting is very good and carries most of the emotional weight. The game’s central philosophy is a little frustrating though. It’s normal for relationships to run their course. However, just assuming you, your thoughts, and your feelings cannot be accurately perceived is unfair to everyone in your life’s orbit. It felt like the game’s story exists entirely because of lack of communication. But feeling that frustration about a sad and stressful situation also proves the game is successful to some extent. Thing-in-itself is a difficult game to recommend, but I respect its ability to prime emotion in such a short period of time.
Great concept and great voice acting, but it ended literally when the first interesting thing occurred.
