About
GOOD NEWS EVERYONE: By purchasing the game, you actually get two games now: 1) The original The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, 2) The Unreal Engine 4 remaster called The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Redux. Please see The Astronauts website for details.
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a first-person story-driven mystery game that focuses entirely on exploration and discovery. It contains no combat or explosions of any kind. If our game leaves any scars, we hope you won’t be able to see them.
You play the game as Paul Prospero, an occult-minded detective who receives a disturbing letter from Ethan Carter. Realizing the boy is in grave danger, Paul arrives at Ethan’s home of Red Creek Valley, where things turn out to be even worse than he imagined. Ethan has vanished in the wake of a brutal murder, which Paul quickly discerns might not be the only local murder worth looking into.
Inspired by the weird fiction (and other tales of the macabre) from the early twentieth century, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter aims to significantly evolve immersive storytelling in games. While it features a private detective and quite a few mental challenges, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is not an especially puzzle-ridden game. Our focus is on atmosphere, mood, and the essential humanity of our characters.
Still, the discoveries won’t happen on their own, or without your help. Using both Paul’s supernatural skill of being able to communicate with the dead, and your own powers of observation, you will discover the mystery behind a trail of corpses, the roots of a dark ancient force lurking in Red Creek Valley, and the fate of a missing boy.
Explore and interact with the beautiful yet ominous world of Red Creek Valley, which was created with the use of revolutionary photogrammetry technology that allows for nearly photorealistic environments.
Communicate with the dead and see how they died in order to gather clues that help you piece together the truth behind Ethan’s disappearance -- and the fate of his family.
Experience, in non-linear fashion, a story that combines the pleasures of pulp, private eye, and horror fiction, all of it inspired by writers such as Raymond Chandler, Algernon Blackwood, Stefan Grabinski, and H. P. Lovecraft.
Conduct the investigation on your own terms and at your own pace. Although there are a few scary bits in the game, players will have no need for sedatives. Our game is less about terror and more about clammy unease.

Experienced through the Redux version: The game has some promising components, however ultimately falls a bit flat. Starting with the story, it does some interesting things in its depiction of grief, and its non-linear progression is very unique albeit I do believe it could've been structured better to avoid the look-in-every-corner-design, that inevitably happens as you miss one crucial piece of the puzzle. The visuals are stunning, they really make me wish more developers focused on art direction over "cutting edge" graphics (UE5 slop). That being said, I think my biggest gripe was just how lackluster the voice performances and dialogue writing was, which pretty much snubs any tension and emotional investment. Overall maybe worth a look if you like walking-sim games but it is far from the best out there. 5.5/10
A 4/5 hour long narrative murder mystery experience for two quid. Why not? Is what I thought when buying this game and I sure am glad that I did. My expectations for the game were on the floor and avoiding hyperbolic statements like “This is my most favouritist bestest game ever!” I would encourage anyone on the fence to give it a go. Immerse yourself in a good story set in a visual and audio masterclass. There is no mechanical skill ceiling for you to get to grips with in this game. If you come into it armed with the ability to press wasd whilst using your mouse to look around and potentially also click (Warning – You may have to do all these things simultaneously!) then you can manage. I can happily report that I only experienced one bug and zero crashes during my completion of the game. The bug issue arose because I was failing a puzzle so badly the game couldn’t comprehend my gormlessness and tried to help me. The plot was interesting throughout and made me want to get to the end by any means necessary (more on this later). The few minutes after finishing the game I was a little confused, even a little unsatisfied if I’m honest. But once I had processed and understood the ending I was contented and even empathetic towards the characters I’d spent the last two afternoons with. The story has twists of narrative and jolts of the bizarre but it’ll all make sense in the end. The visuals are fab! I was always stopping to take in the view, racking up 57 screenshots in just 5 hours of playtime. For all you maths nerds that is a screenshot every 5 and a half minutes… I think. It was a pleasure to spend time in the eerie wooded mountains, with their patchwork of lakes, cloisters of civilisation and the ever present amber duskball in the sky. The soundscape was the most impactful part of the game for me. The music builds suspense and prolongs tension. I often had goosebumps when I was close to the next plot point. The ambient noise as well is perfect and the game did manage to pull me into it’s world. If you don’t like puzzles, don’t play this game. Duh. There are two types, firstly the murders which felt like the main plot beats during the game. They’re stimulating yet horrifying, giving a window in to the very people you will have to watch die. Very fun to solve the murders and things are easily missed so stay vigilant! The other type of puzzles are the “stories”. The stories are odd, I had no clue why they were in the game until the very end. So stick with the outlandishness and wait for it to make sense later. The stories range in their oddity, some made me marvel, some made me scared and one of them was frustrating as hell. You’ll see what I mean. Lastly, I have to credit steam user Mike who made this fantastic comprehensive steam guide https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=373569878 on how to complete all the puzzles in the game. I couldn’t have finished the game without his help. Go as far as you can on your own and then use Mike’s bountiful wisdom to tie it all together. Good luck finding Ethan.
Для этой игры явно нужно особое настроение. Как только накрыло внезапное желание созерцать и погружаться в события, сразу решила её пройти. С польской озвучкой очень приятно было проходить.
Although the graphics are amazing, I must admit that I find the game insipid. It couldn't sustain my interest that I decided not to finish it. Sorry folks. Just not for me.
Reminded me of What Remains of Edith Finch. good puzzles, good music and atmosphere
In one hour of my playthrough i managed to: - be obducted by alien spaceship after chasing an astronaut in a forest - find out about some an evil demon - listen to the most cliche pseudophilosophical monologue I've ever heard - skip tutorial, which was so hidden it almost seemed like the developers didn't want me to understand the mechanics The plot didn't grab my interest at all, so I decided to drop it. I really wish it was a more linear walking simulator, because the world is utterly stunning. Unfortunately, The Astronauts decided to add annoying "detective mode" and generic enviormental puzzles. I think it's a game "you're supposed to like" as a open-minded player, but in reality it falls short when compared to great walking simulators such as Dear Esther, Hellblade, or even games as simple as Shelter. Steam didn't let me review the Redux version, since my very short playtime.
