About

Five years ago, The Viscount and its crew set sail through The Pale Passage in search of absolute magnetic South. The ship and its crew were tragically lost to the ice, never to be seen again. Her sister ship, The Temperance shall follow in her path, hoping to find answers where The Viscount failed.

A polar exploration game set in an unforgiving frozen wasteland where you embark on a treacherous voyage across the ice and through the Pale Beyond. It’s a stunning yet harsh landscape that can change at any moment.
Every decision matters and the ice doesn’t care.
As the expedition unfolds and the Polar Winter approaches, every decision you make will have a meaningful impact on the story as you navigate your way across the ice.

You didn’t ask to lead this expedition, but here you are. Stuck in the ice, Captain missing, miles from civilisation. Someone has to take charge.
Manage your meagre resources, balance safety and morale, make the hard calls, and head in the only direction you can - through The Pale Beyond.
Keeping the crew (and sled dogs) safe, fed, and warm during the expedition is imperative. Surviving the ice will matter little in the face of a mutiny. Every vote will count. So keep the crew on your side.

Saltstone Studios is located in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Their first game was The Pale Beyond, a story-driven survival management game.
The team is interested in exploring novel systems-based narrative games that combine the kind of deep choice and consequence narratives you find in interactive fiction, with extensive systems more common from other genres - all designed to bring in-depth worlds and characters to life.
Each title draws direct influences from the complex history of Ireland and Britain, with extensive literary and historical research. Every pixel, sentence, and musical note, is hand crafted in house with care and attention.

I loved the dense narrative, the game very much felt like an interactive version of the great series "The Terror", including great characters & writing and a ever growing sense of danger while the story is unfolding. I liked how much care was given the game; some decisions really matter, and even small decisions lead to different outcomes.
Wonderfully Sentimental
I really enjoyed The Pale Beyond. The story kept me interested, the art style fits the cold and isolated setting well, and the music adds to the atmosphere. The characters also grow on you over time, partly because you decide how to interact with them. You can support their opinions and needs, go against them, or choose something in between. I only played through the story once, but I can imagine different choices leading to quite different outcomes. I’m not going to lie: I was more interested in following the story than dealing with the survival management side of the game. It can be pretty unforgiving, sometimes forcing you to replay one or multiple weeks. Whenever that happened, I edited my save file so I could survive and continue the story. If the management aspect sounds intimidating, don’t let it stop you. After all, You choose how you want to experience a game. I’d recommend The Pale Beyond even if you’re mainly interested in the story. The survival management is definitely part of the experience, but for me, the characters, story and journey through this frozen world were the main reason to keep playing. save file edit guide: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2939369295

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,400 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

It's a really cool game. I loved the vibe, the worldbuilding, the art used in the game as well as the character design, I also found the story really engaging and the gameplay was a lot of fun. The problems that I encountered were not game-breaking but still I think the developers would do well to address: the tutorial is not long enough, the functioning of some mechanics can be counterintuitive (for example providing adequate heat won't assure you against freezing becoming frostbite) and is discovered by playing around and reloading, moreover I think that you don't really have a lot of time to hang around and become attached to your crew. I understand that the game wants you to care for your men and that it also tries to play into the idea that they are normal sailors that keep to themselves but the final result is meh, you get more attached to the other leaders of the ship with whom you spend more time but there is only an handful of occasions to speak to the others, making their possible death kind of not a big deal outside of the fact you have less people to do the various jobs. Overall I would still give it an 8/10
So cool. Artwork is great, gameplay is fun and stressful, in a good way.
There has become such a plethora of options to pick from for video games that it can be hard to stand out, feel unique, or even look like something you should spend your time on. Narrative games always seem to fly under the radar, yet, time and again, they're filled with such depth and warmth. The Pale Beyond is likely now one of my new favorite games. Simple mechanics, with gorgeous artwork and breath taking scores, allow you to focus on the story. Every choice matters in a way I don't think I've ever experienced. It is at its core a survival game, but unlike most modern versions, it reminds me of The Oregon Trail. The main premise for both is that you have to manage your resources to get the characters to their goal. That is where I'd end my comparison of the two. The time love and dedication I could feel from every aspect of this game is why it is one of my new favorites. From taking the time to hand draw all of these element while also weaving in so many real world experiences. Phenomenal! One comment I saw in the community page was that this pregnant woman was mad at the developers for making her cry this much. Now I am a sap tree, I cry at everything so that is my baseline. I assume games will make me cry. Because I know how much I cry and how pregnancy brain makes one cry at EVERYTHING I thought nothing of it. I should have THOUGHT something of it. I won't spoil what it is that made me cry (I don't know if it was the same for this pregnant woman) but I will say be prepared. It's towards the end of your voyage. You think that you are through the worst of it. You aren't. After this event happened, I went to see other peoples reactions. Many people said they dropped the game at that point (which I totally understand). Yet what made me love this moment ignoring how it gutted me was because it was clear the developers had made this scene with so much reverence. That is my final point, this story was intentional, always. The foreshadowing was everywhere, but in a way the feels natural and adds so much depth and weight to both the story and the characters [One complaint is that the map function are a little janky on MacOS, definitely still playable just use your arrow keys and zoom when the map won't move right] TLDR: Buy the game, its beautiful, you WILL cry :)
Worth your time.
I totally get the reviews about the weird UI (playing on a Mac there were a number of annoying things, like zooming and panning being difficult) but wow. This game is easily in my top 5. A beautiful, unique, cinematic, complex, well-written, and extremely moving experience. You really have to pay attention to, understand, and get to know the nuances of each character to earn their loyalty, and although I definitely cheated 4 or 5 times and went back to redo weeks where I accidentally killed everyone (lol), once I got the hang of the interface around week 7 it was a 2-day binge to completion.
Very good game worthy of your time.
