About

Five years ago, The Viscount and its crew set sail through The Pale Passage in search of absolute magnetic South. The ship and its crew were tragically lost to the ice, never to be seen again. Her sister ship, The Temperance shall follow in her path, hoping to find answers where The Viscount failed.

A polar exploration game set in an unforgiving frozen wasteland where you embark on a treacherous voyage across the ice and through the Pale Beyond. It’s a stunning yet harsh landscape that can change at any moment.
Every decision matters and the ice doesn’t care.
As the expedition unfolds and the Polar Winter approaches, every decision you make will have a meaningful impact on the story as you navigate your way across the ice.

You didn’t ask to lead this expedition, but here you are. Stuck in the ice, Captain missing, miles from civilisation. Someone has to take charge.
Manage your meagre resources, balance safety and morale, make the hard calls, and head in the only direction you can - through The Pale Beyond.
Keeping the crew (and sled dogs) safe, fed, and warm during the expedition is imperative. Surviving the ice will matter little in the face of a mutiny. Every vote will count. So keep the crew on your side.

Saltstone Studios is located in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Their first game was The Pale Beyond, a story-driven survival management game.
The team is interested in exploring novel systems-based narrative games that combine the kind of deep choice and consequence narratives you find in interactive fiction, with extensive systems more common from other genres - all designed to bring in-depth worlds and characters to life.
Each title draws direct influences from the complex history of Ireland and Britain, with extensive literary and historical research. Every pixel, sentence, and musical note, is hand crafted in house with care and attention.

An incredible game, bought it on sale on a whim as I thought the art was cool. Never thought I'd fall in love with the game, the art style and the crew. Would recommend to anyone who love incredible characters, a harrowing story which can genuinely change in massive ways from your decisions and art and scenes you can't help but screen shot.
Captain has a frozen arse Hard as rock, no thawing soon Never tells which way is south Hardly tells their arse from mouth They never had a notion for taking our command Send us to the hells for biscuits We eat out of their hands We eat out of their hands Captain Hunt, could take a ship Further than his fingertip Captain Shaw can't move a pace What a waste of hauling space They never had a notion for taking our command Send us to the hells for biscuits We eat out of their hands We eat out of their hands!

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,400 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

This was such a beautiful adventure! I was so deep into the story, I finished the whole game within 3 days or so. You will love this game, if you love adventure and action - it's a dialogue-heavy visual novel with the thrill of discovery (with the elements of resource managment and planning, so it may feel a little overwhelming, but I always say there are wrong choices...). The plotline is engaging and full of twists, the characters and their dailogues are very well-planned, the music is very good, too. Overall, it's very immersive. I just can't wait for the next announced game by this studio! Seeing the story through to the end felt more satisfying than many movies... Sidenote: I am personally not a fan of very difficult and punishing time and resource managment games (the likes of Pathologic), and this game was not it, so don't worry if that's an issue for you. I didn't find the managment here too hard (also, just try to enjoy the experience, and don't let any 'bad choices' ruin your fun, haha) If I could point out just one minor flaw it would be that
talking with every loyal crew member TWICE (pre- and post-final decision) right before the actual epilogue felt too long and unnecessary
, despite that this game was 10/10 for me.
An excellent survival game with a really gripping story and narrative. And hey, I always love Frosty Hells.
Exactly the game I was looking for, I love the concept of getting to know crew members and forming bonds with them, and the events of the story were human and realistic. I hope there were more games like this, truly a gem I would recommend anytime. I usually don't replay games, even my favourites, but this might be an exception since I'm really really curious about all the other possible outcomes. Give it a chance and you won't regret it!
This was a fun survival experience. There is a trippy ending if you make the right choices. Even that is subjective.
Amazing Atmosphere, great Story over all. Allthough the ending feels kind of clumsy, The Pale Beyond is clearly a project, which people poured lots of love in. The Character-Sprites are beautiful, the maps feel crisp and really well decorated. The UI breaks more than it works usually, but after the 10th time it doesn't break your immersion anymore ( you could frame it, that the cold makes your characters fingers unreliable). The Dialogue feels a bit heavy handed, but it's usually quite charming. The "moral" choices you make usually consist of good, comically evil and a bad compromise. Often the repercussions of your actions hit you right away, but every so often there comes a moment, where a trivial choice you made like 2 hours ago, comes to bite you in the ass. Overall i can recommend this game, if you like resource management and the fantasy of leading a group of survivors through crisis. (Also watch HBO's "the Terror", it's great)
