About

Five years ago, The Viscount and its crew set sail through The Pale Passage in search of absolute magnetic South. The ship and its crew were tragically lost to the ice, never to be seen again. Her sister ship, The Temperance shall follow in her path, hoping to find answers where The Viscount failed.

A polar exploration game set in an unforgiving frozen wasteland where you embark on a treacherous voyage across the ice and through the Pale Beyond. It’s a stunning yet harsh landscape that can change at any moment.
Every decision matters and the ice doesn’t care.
As the expedition unfolds and the Polar Winter approaches, every decision you make will have a meaningful impact on the story as you navigate your way across the ice.

You didn’t ask to lead this expedition, but here you are. Stuck in the ice, Captain missing, miles from civilisation. Someone has to take charge.
Manage your meagre resources, balance safety and morale, make the hard calls, and head in the only direction you can - through The Pale Beyond.
Keeping the crew (and sled dogs) safe, fed, and warm during the expedition is imperative. Surviving the ice will matter little in the face of a mutiny. Every vote will count. So keep the crew on your side.

Featuring original musical compositions, shanties and accordion tunes that will dynamically evolve alongside your journey.

Saltstone Studios is located in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Their first game was The Pale Beyond, a story-driven survival management game.
The team is interested in exploring novel systems-based narrative games that combine the kind of deep choice and consequence narratives you find in interactive fiction, with extensive systems more common from other genres - all designed to bring in-depth worlds and characters to life.
Each title draws direct influences from the complex history of Ireland and Britain, with extensive literary and historical research. Every pixel, sentence, and musical note, is hand crafted in house with care and attention.

Неожиданно хорошо. Механики интересные, есть над чем подумать, атмосфера имеется. Как фанат фростпанка, одобряю.
A solid game, simple gameplay but great visuals, sound and story. Big recommandation to anyone into ressource management in a short story environment. I bought this game on sale for 3 $ but I truly believe it's worth 25$ just as much.
A fun graphic novel / choose your own adventure / light management sim. I saw most of what I needed to, and got a result for all the major characters I was happy with on the first playthrough, but it was a very enjoyable 7 hours.

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 25 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 10 places towards #1, and the 2,413 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

A moving, interesting, and worthwhile story.
Masterpiece. I can't explain how much this game has done to me and how empty i feel after finishing it. i completely 100% advise you to play it. if you really love Disco Elysium, play this masterpiece and you will thank me for it.
Steam refuses to honor my $4 refund request because it's been 15 days instead of 14.
É tipo frostpunk na água. Muito legal. viciei facil. Nunca tinha ouvido falar desse jogo mas me apaixonei pelos personagens, as várias escolhas, diálogos, a arte... Muito bom. EDIT: EU NAO ACREDITO.............................. TO CHORANDO MUITO. NAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO QUEM ESCREVEU ISSO? NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAO. Eu fiz de tudo pra salvar os... vocês sabem.
Overall
I thoroughly enjoyed the game and it captured my attention from start to finish. I reccommend this game if you enjoy story driven, tell-tale-esque games, where choices impact the ending as well as want something not too heavy and consuming.
Story
I enjoyed the story and personally I found it captivating, although more different events to shake up the story further would be welcome, as after you complete the whole story, the replay value feels lackluster, as you begin to realize some events are scripted and serve as certain chokepoints which you cannot deviate too far from at all, but in the end it gives enough variety so that choices do feel meaningful and change the story quite a lot, especially during the first blind playthrough, which I heavily recommend.
Game mechanics
The game mechanics are solid, the inspiration from frostpunk 2 and frostpunk games in general is felt. The mechanics are rather simple and not as deep as those games, or other similiar style games in general, although I would argue this plays in the game's favour, as the systems are fairly well balanced and make it interesting enough to play, but not intimidating enough to drop.
Difficulty
Not too complicated so it doesn't evoke the feel of an overwhelming city builder or tycoon type game, but not too simple so you don't feel like the game is actively trying to poke fun of the player and the whole „choices matter“ mechanic by presenting „Bad choice“ and „Good choice“ while giving you enough resources to do either.
Graphics and sound design
The graphics are pretty to look at, while also serving their purpose - establishing characters and their seperating traits. The soundtrack is decent, very beautiful sometimes and even reminds me of Disco elysium at times. Though what is heavily missed from the game is full voicing, that is an area in which the game offers nothing.
Comparison
I perceive heavy notes and inspiration from Frospunk 2, Disco Elysium, so If you enjoyed those games, you will, more likely than not, enjoy this one and vice versa. Other close comparisons would be Pentiment and Road 96, they are similiar in their focus on characters and the „choices matter“ mechanic. While I wouldn't deem it a direct copy of any game, this game feels like if frostpunk 2 and disco elysium had a child.
Final notes
The game feels complete, has interesting game mechanics that mix well with it's focus on characters, has beautiful graphic design, a quite interesting story, sometimes has nice soundtrack pieces and overall is a finished product, with a few things that would improve the experience missing (voice acting, depth of choices and scenarios, depth of the loyalty system) but do not take away from this beautiful game. 8/10.
PROS

Good story
Good game mechanics
Decent difficulty
Beautiful graphics
Decent sound design

CONS

Lacks voice acting
Lacks depth of choice
Loyalty system is too simple at times

8/10
I admit I was frustrated with some of the choices, but all in all, I loved this game.
