About

Five years ago, The Viscount and its crew set sail through The Pale Passage in search of absolute magnetic South. The ship and its crew were tragically lost to the ice, never to be seen again. Her sister ship, The Temperance shall follow in her path, hoping to find answers where The Viscount failed.

A polar exploration game set in an unforgiving frozen wasteland where you embark on a treacherous voyage across the ice and through the Pale Beyond. It’s a stunning yet harsh landscape that can change at any moment.
Every decision matters and the ice doesn’t care.
As the expedition unfolds and the Polar Winter approaches, every decision you make will have a meaningful impact on the story as you navigate your way across the ice.

You didn’t ask to lead this expedition, but here you are. Stuck in the ice, Captain missing, miles from civilisation. Someone has to take charge.
Manage your meagre resources, balance safety and morale, make the hard calls, and head in the only direction you can - through The Pale Beyond.
Keeping the crew (and sled dogs) safe, fed, and warm during the expedition is imperative. Surviving the ice will matter little in the face of a mutiny. Every vote will count. So keep the crew on your side.

Featuring original musical compositions, shanties and accordion tunes that will dynamically evolve alongside your journey.

Really good game with enjoyable characters and interesting decisions to make that affects your progress. The story borrows heavily from Shackleton’s expedition but is unique enough to to feel like a different experience. You’ll have fun.
I found out about this game through a video and didn't have high hopes, got it simply out of curiosity. It was interesting enough at first, yet I dropped it for weeks early on. Recently I decided to 100% and came back and ohh I was for a surprise. Game totally worth a try if you ask me, story and twists are interesting, characters are compelling and possible replayability after you " finish ". I just wish you had more " input " in purple line( spoilers, so will not say more to it), felt a bit as missed opportunity, but that would be a whole different game then.

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 25 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 10 places towards #1, and the 2,413 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

The Pale Beyond is an arduous journey in which survival and achieving your goals, as well as your sanity and humanity depend entirely on your decisions.
Story
You play as Robin Shaw and sign on as First Officer for an Arctic expedition that promises to be unfathomably tough. However, vast wealth and glory also await. The setting is somewhat historical, blended with a touch of mystery and fiction. Over the course of the game, you get to know the crew and their quirks, having to react to dangers and various situations to pull through safely. The characters are exceptionally well written, and exploring the motivations and peculiarities of individual members is a true pleasure. The expedition itself proves to be incredibly thrilling, driving you forward right up until the end credits roll...
Gameplay
The game primarily consists of making decisions during discussions and managing resources. In many conversations, requests and demands are brought to you that you must navigate with bravour, or fail trying. You need to defuse conflicts and exercise intuition to avoid potential strokes of fate. Furthermore, you must manage food rationing alongside the research and exploration of the ice. A lot is unclear at the beginning, compounded by a rather tough difficulty curve. Until you realize that you need to exploit the game systems to a degree to deal properly with hunger and cold, you might find yourself restarting a few times. All in all, however, it feels very cohesive and integrates seamlessly into the overall gameplay loop.
Visuals
The Pale Beyond comes with a beautiful art style: half comic book, half historical documentary painting. This is paired with punchy, albeit simple, effects and animations that add that extra flair to many situations. The characters are all portrayed brilliantly, and both the environment and equipment are lovingly visualized. After a while, you can't imagine it looking any other way and become completely immersed. Fantastic!
Audio
The audio design for this adventure is another successful part. There is no voice acting for the characters. However, many events are accompanied by very fitting musical tracks, at times soothing, at times melancholic, and at times invigorating to fully immerse you in the moment and take you on an emotional journey. In some places, stunning vistas are paired wonderfully with the soundtrack, inviting you to dream. Marvelous!
Summary
The game delivers a fantastically told adventure that sparks genuine interest in historical polar expeditions and their grueling journeys. The characters and narrative are excellent, complemented by a gorgeous art style and a fantastic soundtrack. The mechanics are easy to grasp, though it takes a little time to learn how to apply and/or bend them to reach a successful outcome. All in all, it was a fantastic journey that I highly recommend. Especially when on sale! It took me roughly 12 to 13 hours to complete the playthrough. Excellent writing and a satisfying core gameplay loop that reinforces the theme of leadership; balancing opinion and survival via the main mechanics. The art style and music are very good, making it easy to fall into this alternate history setting. If I had to say one bad thing it's that there were some minor pacing issues around the end that made things a little abrupt at the end. I also didn't like the mechanic that was introduced at the end of the game; it felt like a poor time for this and the entire mechanic suits a certain style of player.
This game is insane, i have never before played a game that has made me experience such emotion. 10/10 will replay.
I my z tatusiem i moim dziadkiem Piłsudskim żeśmy płynęli na statkach. Taaak Panie redaktorze.
The Pale Beyond is an exceptional little choose-your-own-adventure game with some resource management. The gameplay aspect is well-tailored, even if not particularly inspired. I felt consistently on edge while only having to manage a few crises resulting from my own mistakes. However, I also found it subtly easy: once you understand the flow of managing ailments while still pushing for more resources, the "game" part of The Pale Beyond became pretty simple. If the game was any longer it may have overstayed its welcome, but it does a great job adding the needed sense of pressure to your narrative decisions. The art is obviously beautiful, it adds a lot to each character. The music isn't anything exceptional, but it does add to the mood well and is not an afterthought. Those narrative decisions, and the crew you journey with, is what stands out. The writing is very good. I felt like Robin Shaw was a character, even though they were my Shaw, and every character felt very human despite everyone still having to be centralized around a few core personality traits. Still, there were frequent enough wrinkles to each character that kept me from feeling like any of the relationship building was robotic, and overall game of keeping the crew trusting of you while picking your times to defy each crew member felt rewarding. What The Pale Beyond does best is the pathos of each member: while most of them are somewhat well-tread themes, they all felt very embodied, almost never overstated, and all the while compelling. I very earnestly felt attached to near everyone in the crew. I devoured the game in just 4 or so days because of it. My only two gripes is that there the UI is somewhat buggy and also just generally not very user-friendly even when working as intended, and that there are not enough save options. There are points where you may think the game has established a checkpoint, only to realize that it did not because you technically haven't ended the week yet, and will rewind you 20-30 minutes worth of dialogue. There is a Lot of dialogue, so having to restart a week can be frustrating, even though clicking through dialogue you have already read is pretty fast. Fair warning: emotionally, the game is tough. It doesn't pull punches and isn't trying to hide that. Stuff will go wrong and you will feel bad at points playing. Animals and people can and will die. Characters often don't act rationally and can be frustrating. If you don't like these things in narrative games, you won't like The Pale Beyond. It's mostly what the game is. If you are down for that, it's a real treat.
