The Message from Deep Space

Game with a very interesting premise regarding making first contact with an alien species. Definitely not for everybody though...I'm about 110 levels through it right now and for sure this game is something that's very much geared towards people with strong STEM knowledge. Just to get this far I've had to recall a bunch of high school math, and it's been a LONG time since then :) It's a challenge, but I'm glad a game like this exists. If you fall into the target demographic for this game, you'll find this a very enjoyable and rewarding experience.

Just what my autistic ass needed

It's good. It's another "learn this language from context" game. So this review has neigh zero spoilers, feel free to just stop reading at the point you are either sold or put off. To compare: It's more difficult than Chants of the Sanaar, It's as about as difficult as Heaven's Vault, but mostly because it has math in there too. For a while we did get worried if the game gets into language proper over math, but it does, so don't worry too much about that. Content length wise, I have not finished the game at the time of this review, though I think I am well past the halfway point. I'd recommend playing this with multiple people, not too many, just 2-4ish. (I'm specifically doing 1 other person with drop-in/out friends occasionally.) With a operator streaming, and your fellow translators helping in whatever way they see fit. Or just be in the same room. Just make sure someone has a calculator ready.

love this game warning: there's a hard wall of math/geometry/logic etc before you get to the language stuff, if you just want language translation stuff go play chants of senaar instead (respectful) (not everyone cheers when geometry comes up, which is fair) (and chants is a sick game too) also this game is wayyyyyy longer than i expected? which is good and bad? pro: i suspected this was a one-evening sort of game, then act 1 ended which took me a while to get through, then i glanced at the achievements list and saw how many acts there were and was delighted there was so much more ahead. con: don't want to spoil with specific numbers but the last few acts (apart from the last one) really drag, just feel like the pacing slowed to a crawl there. that was also where i started to feel what i'm calling Golden Idol Syndrome, where i know what i'm meant to say but i don't know the dang words the game wants. but the 'this is dragging' feeling comes in really late, promise hard recommend if you're down for science. <3 the ending

I enjoyed my time with The Message From Deep Space. I happen to have degrees in mathematics and linguistics, so this premise for a game is so perfect that it almost feels targeted to snipe specifically me. Knowledge of those and other topics will serve you well in the game, but I think you will be fine without them. The game has some hint features you can turn on if you are having trouble with messages. I like language games a lot, and I find that ones with free-text conversational formats (like this one) tend to devolve into "guess what I'm thinking" simulators, which usually turns me off of them. In this particular case, I think terrific care has been taken to minimize that. Only toward the very end of the game did I encounter an issue with it, and it was only a handful of messages.
