As much as i liked the first game, and as much as i loved Tangle Tower (despite its kinda messy ending), this game is without question the best one. Literally everything about it works for me. 10/10

Three full releases in, Detective Grimoire has taken shape as a notable detective game franchise. I certainly wouldn't be upset if SFB Games focused their attention solely on this series! Mermaid Mask is a solid and assured step up from 2019's Tangle Tower - a bit bigger in story, a bit more polish in presentation, a bit more flash in the clues and mechanics - that is certainly worth the wait in any case. While the game's central mystery is wonderfully crafted, the real star of the show is the overall direction: a whimsical, unique art style that stands out from the crowd, atmosphere oozing from every plate of the submarine's ramshackle hull, and excellent sound design and voice acting - I really don't laugh at video game writing, and I speed through voice lines because I can read faster, but Mermaid Mask had me hanging on every goofy, melodramatic word. If I had one qualm, it's that as this series develops, the bigger stories need more robust mechanics to keep up. With dozens of clues scattered around the ship, hundreds upon hundreds of potential voice lines to listen to, and a sometimes tenuous relationship between what clue you've just found and what the game needs you to do next, the poor single hint button is under a lot of strain. Giving Grimoire a persistent task list, or a more integrated way to know if you've found all the clues in a given room, or more specific hints on offer could all add a smoothness and let detectives focus on solving the mystery instead of solving the designer's intention. Strategies from other games (like Ace Attorney removing used-up items from your inventory between chapters) wouldn't go amiss here. But hopefully that's just a growing pain that Detective Grimoire will overcome as he builds his legacy as a standout sleuth protagonist, one case at a time.

I liked the characters more in Tangle Tower but the sequel was still just as amazing. They did a better job with the ending too. Really hoping they make another sequel

I feel fortunate to have had steam recommend me this game - unbelievably charming and a joy to play from start to finish. the puzzles are fun and interesting, the story and characters are well-written, the voice acting and music are both great, and the art ties it all together. can't say enough good things about this game. looking forward to playing more from this studio.

A wonderful leap forward in narrative, design, and execution from Tangle Tower. It was exciting to see how the team has honed in their craft. Every conversation point is well written and the game is without any generic statements or wasted space. The chemistry between the two detectives is great and makes for a fun journey while solving the mystery. The Mystery this time is the biggest level up since Tangle Tower. That game had a great mystery box, that was unfortunately lackluster once opened. The premise to the murder this time is a wonderful closed mystery room that actually delivers and a superbly crafted and well delivered resolution that exceeds expectations as a murder-mystery narrative.
