This is the best opening arc in trails for me so many unexpected thing happened. The cast is great. The new combat and orbment system is good too The only downsize is the lack of voice acting. Especially for the MC
New arc, new setting, new characters, new engine. Falcom introduces the new era of Trails games in Calvard. Like its predecessors, we in for a slow start. This game brings us around the big cities of Calvard with stops to the nation's outskirts. Focused on Van Arkride and its episodic-like characters joining the party. There is a lot of banter we see between party members that feels goofy and light-hearted like the Sky series. The plot is fine with callbacks to Reverie and sets up critical hints for the future. The music is great a feels experimental with the different instruments and synths. Paired with the jazz that plays in the cities and battle themes, it reminds me a little of the Sky series. With the new engine we have new improved models, effects, and cutscenes. The whole package feels stylized in Falcom's vision. Especially with the cutscenes bring in new hype moments and character introductions. And we can see the payoff in the game especially with the action cutscenes first shown in Reverie. Along side these awesome animations is the new combat gameplay. We introduced to a more arpg style of gameplay on the field/overworld. Attacking, dodging, and landing heavy hitters to fight the enemies. Of course we still have our turn based timeline gameplay by activating shards in the field. Now we have the option to move freely and decide on an action to end our turn. As well as freely choosing whom to follow attack with. The orbment system is also reworked with a combination of what we see in the previous games. With matching multiple elements giving turn based passives but also keeping the core of cold steel with specific arts in a different menu. Really enjoyed this new arc. Also you meet Kiryu Kazuma at a strip club. Plus Van is Jotaro Kujo in Japanese. 7/10

As the series emerges from the confused erraticness and cleaning up from that as it barrels to completion, Daybreak shows thats over and its ready to end on its feet. The Trails Conversations are extremely numerous, probably the most in the series, giving this tale alot of gravitas and indirect "showing by telling" that's just good character writing. And it takes the place of another field of critters to slay for some slow leveling; like Reverie before it, just have interesting characters bounce off each other and sometimes go deep instead of cramming it at the end. I like Van. The reason he does stuff, says stuff, does this job, relates to others like this, all makes sense. He's like a few of the facets of previous protags but without any of the mishandlings. Durante's PC Smorgasbord Of Options is the industry standard. Its insane other devs/porters wont learn from this embarrassment of riches, especially in audio. Some of the combat stuff was erratic; Shards was fun, as was the semi-return of Quartz lines, but the timeline is a confusing mess making Artes hard to gauge when they'd actually go off, and there's no turn stealing with Supers. The end is also very...overly sentimental? Like, it was for the last game of an arc? So you'd have dangerous characters hanging around like neighbors and reused job plots. Makes the Finale take 3 times as long as it needed.
Probably the most mixed I've felt about a game in this series so far. Most of the new characters are pretty good, although Agnes might be the most boring party member in the entire series, didn't care for her. The pacing is all over the place, the final chapter in particular was a huge slog to get through. The real time combat is also extremely jank, with some pretty awful hitboxes and others that linger for too long so you dodge and get hit anyway. Still a pretty good game, but a big downgrade from Reverie in just about every way in my opinion.
I have to separate this one into two reviews: Story An excellent recovery after the disorganized mess of Reverie. No more branching, no more random generated dungeons or chests. The story is stronger for it, and the characters are better too. The more adult tone is also refreshing after 10 games, Falcom must know their audience aren't kids anymore. I do wish Trails would do away with the plot armor that every character seems to have, but overall this was one of the better ones for story. Gameplay Far, far, too easy, even on nightmare (not new game + even). It's just too easy to chain crafts back to back and obliterate every boss in this game. With Grendel, that goes double. Regal Beatdown is severely broken. I found myself using the Xipha far less than I'd used prior games' Orbments because strategizing which ones to tweak for each player mattered far less here. Speed is still king, as ever. The new field battle system is a good change. Overall I had fun, despite it being far too easy.

DO the work. Don't play this as a first entry. I realize asking people to play like 10 games is insane but just stop thinking about it/waiting for remakes and just hop into FC or 1st and ask questions later. You'll probably catch up faster than you think, even if you are busy/work full-time. Game is really solid. If you really need a number, I'd give it exactly 4/5. In terms of overall ranking, I'd probably put it behind FC or 3rd as the 5th or 6th best entry so far. I think Daybreak is a refreshing entry after the quality dip this series experienced in the Erebonia arc (and to a much lesser extent reverie). I'll briefly go into the three things that bothered me about Daybreak 1 just as a heads up, but chances are you will probably like this entry. -Chapter 3 is kind of bad. Thankfully there are a total of 6 chapters+ an Intermission chapter and I think all of them vary from good to very good parts of the game. -The writing does get carried away and hard to take seriously at times (with respect to power scaling and the extent of the main characters' knowledge with respect to the overall plot and villain motivations). Thankfully, it rarely affects the important parts of the story so it mostly just comes across as side eye rolling cringe moments. -The main villain group "A" is split in half between 3 interesting and 3 uninteresting villains 2 of which are basically just slight variations of C's sidekicks in CS1. This isn't to say that A as a whole is a bad villain for Daybreak 1 (the organization's motivations and lore are compelling). However, when half of the main villain gallery consists of, for the most part, forgettable characters it does detract from the overall experience/satisfaction in bringing them down towards the end of the game.
