When 3 NYU students kill themselves, nobody thinks that a sinister force is at work. Nobody but fledgling medium Rosa Blackwell & her new spirit guide Joey Mallone.

It's a couple hours of gameplay for $5, maybe stick to getting it on sale.

The Blackwell Legacy is a wonderful start to a classic indie series. You play as Rosa Blackwell, an awkward freelance writer who discovers she’s a spirit medium, and Joey Mallone, her sarcastic 1930s ghost companion. What really hooked me was the writing and the unique approach to investigation. Instead of rubbing random inventory items together, the gameplay actually makes you feel like a detective: you take notes, combine clues in a notebook, and search for info on an old in-game desktop computer. The graphics are old-school pixel art and the puzzles are on the easier side, but the atmosphere and the chemistry between Rosa and Joey kept me fully invested. It's a short, bite-sized mystery that clearly sets up a much bigger story.
This is a masterpiece. I'm in love with classic graphic adventures, but I know when I'm playing a good one and a bad one. This one is amazing. First of all, intuitive and achievable puzzles. Good, interesting story and amazing characters. The voice acting is really good. I wish the audio quality was better, but this is not spoiling the experience. The scenario is beautiful. I know it's pixel art, but it is gorgeous and cohesive. And last but not least, can we talk about the dev's love for his own work??? His enthusiasm in the commentary mode is just lovely. You can see he had the time of his life developing this amazing jewel, learning how to improve things and sharing his baby with every other artist working on this. If only there were more than 5 games... I need like 100 right now.
A classic point and click from Wadjet Eye Games who have now gone onto produce a large collection of old school adventures. Blackwell Legacy is the first game of the 5-part Blackwell series so be sure to play this one before the others. Set in New York you play as Rosangela Blackwell. A socially anxious newspaper writer who reluctantly finds out she is a spirit medium. With a few recent deaths around the university campus, she and her overly charming spirit guide Joey attempt to both solve the mysterious deaths and help the deceased move on. This game is a simple point and click adventure offering two commands – Look and Interact. The puzzles are never really challenging, and the game is short and sweet at around 3 hours. The voice acting really stands out, especially for the 2 main characters. Worth a 2nd playthrough with the developer commentary mode active. Developer Dave Gilbert offers great insight into the voice actors, artists and inspired locations from his hometown of New York. This is old school pixel graphics running natively at 320x240 resolution. Thankfully there are many scaling/resolution options to increase the window size.
I've always loved point & click adventures, and this one is pretty great... VERY short... about 2 hours of gameplay in total. The story is good and intriguing; the writing could be a bit stronger. There are points where a conversation seems to flip very quickly or be over very abruptly... like trying to convince someone they go from "Absolutely not!" to "Okay Sure!" after just one sentence... people just change their minds at the drop of a hat... even in the ending... which could have benefitted from more verbal sparing rather than "You said no... so I'll do this one simple action and now you've completely changed your mind" it made the ending feel somewhat cheap... but don't get me wrong, the premise is good and overall its a good game... some of the voice acting is a bit ropey... one character you can hear rusting in the mic when it was recorded... The biggest problem I had though... was the music... The actual music itself wasn't bad... but it was VERY loud in some placed and drowned out the dialogue... and there is no way to turn it off, or even turn it down for that matter. I hope this issue is fixed in the later games.
The Blackwell Legacy is a modest starting point, but it establishes the core identity of the series with clarity. It’s a short game, mechanically simple, and somewhat limited in scope — yet it lays the groundwork for everything that comes after. Rosa feels intentionally restrained as a protagonist. She’s not immediately charismatic or confident, and that awkwardness shapes the tone of the experience. Joey, on the other hand, brings contrast and energy, and their early interactions carry much of the game. The dynamic isn’t fully developed yet, but you can already see where it’s heading. Gameplay is very straightforward, even by point-and-click standards. The puzzles are generally easy, sometimes a bit too direct, and the structure is linear. There’s little friction, which works in favor of pacing, but also makes the experience feel lighter than the later entries. The story follows the same principle: simple, contained, and without major twists. It introduces the central concept effectively, but doesn’t try to go much deeper. At this stage, it’s more about establishing rules and tone than delivering a strong emotional payoff. What makes it worth playing is not necessarily what it achieves on its own, but what it enables. It’s the foundation of a series that becomes significantly more refined and impactful over time. On its own, it’s a decent and accessible adventure. As the starting point of the Blackwell series, it’s essential.
The Blackwell Legacy is an emotionally charged point‑and‑click paranormal noir, where the cigarette smoke is replaced by ghost‑light and the case file is made of unsolved murders and all the things we never get to say. The storyline is anchored by Rosa’s isolation and Joey’s sardonic presence, two characters bound together by a supernatural inheritance neither fully understands. From start to epilogueous lingering what drives it isn’t the mechanics but the mood. A haunted New York, a reluctant medium, and a partnership forged in grief, impositions of will, and perceptual responsibilities. “There are known knowns, things we know that we know; and there are known unknowns, things that we know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns, things we do not know we don't know.” ― Donald Rumsfeld, Known and Unknown I have to do another run through for the rest of my trophies, but honestly, I am looking forward to it.
Wadjet Eye Games never disappoints with their games. I absolutely LOVE Primordia and Shardlight, and I have all the Blackwell games on steam. They are pretty and their stories are always so intriguing and twisted.
