The 39 Steps (2013, разработчик — The Story Mechanics) — интерактивная новелла по одноимённому роману Джона Бакена.

loved the art style, story was amazing, especially the last few "chapters" imo
Compelling story with no actual gameplay, avoid if you are looking for the latter but well worth your time if you're looking for a laid-back narrative experience
Lovely interactive story very well-polished and well-delivered. The story is played in chapters, and you can't really save within a chapter, but individual chapters are pretty quick. The voice acting and especially the art are very good, so it ends up being a nice story experience. The overall vibe captures the atmosphere of the story well.
I reached a point eventually where I was disinterested. However, I'd say it is pretty well written. Just kind of boring.

It's sad to see so many people were turned off of this adaptation for in my mind unfair reasons. First everyone complained you had to rotate the mouse to continue the text, when if you actually read the controls it said you can also do this by using the left and right arrow keys. The optional mouse movement control is to mimic turning the pages of a book. Many people also complain that this adaptation is not as in detail/pales in comparison to the actual book, and whether that may or may not be true, as someone who never read the original book I can say the story here in itself stands on its own merit. I didn't feel that characters lacked enough characterization nor do I think the shortened length affected the comprehensibility of the plot. That being said experiencing this made me want to go read the original book and I hope it would do the same for you. At first I thought this was going to be a pretty boring experience since there's very little interactivity and is mostly just moving through the story, and for the first chapter or two the rather stiff and antiquated English turned me off somewhat. I resolved to continue with the original text anyway and after a chapter or two of slow exposition the story actually gets off to a lightning pace. The protagonist is set up as slightly boring at the beginning of the story and is swept up into a plot of assassination, espionage and geopolitical maneuvering. The worldbuilding is quite nice making you feel like you're in pre WW1 Scotland/England, and the voice acting and overall delivery is nice and atmospheric. A lot of the characters are people you could imagine actually living back in the time period, and it oozes in authenticity. It's obvious that a lot of research and passion went into getting details, and the game often includes some informational backdrops that create a nice mental image of the world at this stage in time. The pacing is a very nice roller coaster that goes from rising and falling in a good way that keeps you intrigued as to what Hannay is going to do next, and it's so interesting to see how he gets from place to place using disguise and subtrefuge to avoid people, often barely escaping in time from his pursuers. The story wraps up nicely and I urge you to make sure not exit after the credits as you'll get an additional scene tying up a loose end and putting a bow on the whole thing. I think this would be a good experience for someone who is a fan of thriller/mystery visual novels and/or pre WW1 espionage stories, it's not the most entertaining "read" of all time if you want to call it that but it's engaging throughout and pretty enthralling considering this came out long before Ian Fleming's Bond character revolutionized the spy/espionage genre. If you love classic literature and visual novels the blend of nice visuals, music and voiceovers create a very engrossing experience and I think people who like good stories and have a little bit of patience to do some reading will enjoy it. The game often goes on sale for .49 cents which is an absolute steal in my eyes.
