About

TaleSpire is a beautiful way to play pen and paper RPGs online. Bring your stories to life and embark upon campaigns together with your friends, regardless of where you are in the world.
With Talespire, the beauty and physicality of tabletop gaming meet the endless possibilities of a digital world. Here you can collaboratively build your worlds without compromising the handcrafted aesthetic of using traditional miniatures.
As a player, you can take on the mantle of multiple heroes and creatures, manage your stats, and express yourself using the growing emote system. Perform dice rolls directly on the board and interact with your environment — at least, as far as your GM will let you!
As a GM, you can dazzle and thrill your friends by building expansive maps, setting up shots, and controlling immersive soundscapes to bring all your delightful and devious designs to life.
TaleSpire is not tied to a specific game or ruleset. Whether you’re running a one-shot or a sprawling campaign, if it's on a square grid then we have your back. We are now in Early Access, so now is your chance to raise up your sword, rally your friends, and take your next adventure online with us.

Setting the stage for your story takes no time at all with Talespire, but even if you forget to prep, it can all be added in while you play. Want to destroy a wall to reveal a secret passage? Do it! Want to rain down piles of gold from the heavens? You have the power. At any moment during your adventure, you (or multiple GMs) can jump into building mode and change the world without interrupting anything else. Our persistent online boards can be created at a moment’s notice, and everything is synchronized in real-time as you dice-roll your way to glory.

It’s dangerous to go alone, but luckily we have a bunch of tools that can help, and all are as pleasing as they are useful. Beautiful dice, rulers and area markers, a range of emotes, and special modes for turn-based combat and cinematic sequences are at your disposal.
Pick from a plethora of pieces to create your scenes! The current roster stands at 280 miniatures, 2100 tiles and props, and 60 unique audio tracks. Our library is ever-expanding; we produce fresh asset packs every month.
TaleSpire boards are designed to be easily shared, whether with friends or with the wider community on sites like TalesBazaar or TalesTavern. You can copy sections of your boards (slabs) and paste them as text outside of TaleSpire. Simply paste the text back into TaleSpire to summon the slab to your hand.
Being in Early Access we still have plenty of adventures ahead of us. We have an active Discord community, which you can find in the social section, and alongside your feedback we’re looking forward to developing the game’s features. So come, journey with us a while.

Just use Foundry VTT instead. Didn't realise I would have to pay for each player I want to play with. Greedy devs. Map maker is good. Community content is good. Other useful features are non existent.

the amount of times this platform crashes mid session is crazy in the past 3 years i thought they would have improved it but a year later the game crashes a hour into a session cool.
Pretty hard to list a negative review after how much time and money I've spent in this, but honestly I think its got a good way to go before its where it needs to be. It absolutely has good bones, but I think the devs know that TaleSpire is king of its kind at the moment, certainly the best 3D VTT. Due to this however, there comes a few major issues that fuel my review today. Firstly, updates are infrequent and minuscule, you will be waiting weeks or months at a time and then they will announce an update that will add the ability to create an AOE Marker and add it to the initiative order (The AOE marker tool already existed, its just the initiative order addition that is added). It feels like there's a lot lined up with their road map, but not a lot actually getting added, which I concede is a terrible opinion to hold against an early access game, however it is still my opinion of its current state. Secondly, building maps and adding the details that you want is tremendously time consuming, you can slap together a building or a roofless dungeon fairly quickly if you don't care about finer details or making things look natural, however if you are someone with a 9-5 and have other hobbies / people / things you like to partake in in life, TaleSpire will demand a large portion of that time if you aim for perfection. I think some extra mechanics to assist with building and pathing would be helpful, there's a lot of cool assets to work with, but making something of them all is super tedious. Finally, myself and most of my group get major performance issues playing this. Even after plenty of troubleshooting, it always seems to be TaleSpire that causes it. One of my players just has audio drivers die the moment TaleSpire boots, completely killing any audio, another player has frequent crashes that are only caused when using very specific mini's, can use 100 of the "right" ones but the second we place the "wrong" one down, crash. And I personally experience overheat issues, almost the moment I boot TaleSpire up my CPU hits 80 degrees Celsius. With the negativity aside though, if you have the time to give it, the product it gives back is unmatched. I even intend on returning to TaleSpire in the future, maybe in a 1.0 release, maybe when there's been a good few more things on their road-map that have been marked as shipped, but certainly when there is more. It's good, but its not incredible, but it certainly can be.
A noble idea, a poor execution. I have three major problems that I would like to see addressed before I can honestly recommend this game. 1) This is a slog to set up a campaign. If you are actually trying to make the map look interesting, and not trying to simply make a box for a building (which, if you're using this system, you likely want it to look nice) takes forever to set up all the little details. You may think, "Hey, this is a 3D system, of course it's gonna take a while to build something!" when in reality, the options are limited, meaning you need to get creative on putting things together to make something that looks nice, and you have to dig through unorganized folders with no way to search for a specific type of tile, so you're forced to dig through the folders and remember which tiles you like. Furthermore, it's way too easy to accidentally upscale everything to an absurd degree, making it hard to make a reasonably sized map instead of forcing your players to move dozens of spaces just to get to the point you want them to be. 2) No character creator. Now, you might say, "But you can use Hero Forge!" Yes, I know, but that only works if you want to make a player character. If you're trying to set up easily distinguishable NPCs, you're gonna be paying tons to set up a all the necessary characters. It's great for players, bad for DMs. There is a way for you to mod in 2D flat tokens, but those are hard to make if you don't have much knowledge on how to work with the programs needed and look through where you need to go to place the files. It's far too much work for something that really needs to be worked on for the game. I am aware of the fact the devs plan on adding in a character builder at some point, as that is one of the milestone rewards they promised, and the Hero Forge thing is just a bit of a temporary fix for things, but this makes it hard for DMs who are on a budget to set up a campaign. Speaking of cost of entry... 3) The "guest edition" isn't free. If you want to invite friends to check out the game, and they aren't interested in DMing, or just want to check out and play in your game, then they'll need to fork over $10 to join your game. And that's all the seats do, all they do is allow you to join in a game, and after that, they can't do much else. It's frustrating to see that and think, "Cool, I can invite my friends to the game!" and then be blocked by a $10/person fee. Don't get me wrong, I understand there are only a few devs, and they really want to make something unique and exclusive to enhance the playing experience of players who are playing remotely, to try and get the tabletop in person feel recreated online, but the problem with how this is set up now is it's very ridged. If you have any idea of how you want to set up the campaign, and it clashes with how the game is set up, tough luck, you'll have to change it to comply with how this system runs. I believe if this system is simplified and made to be more accessible, it could really pick up more traction, but as it is, I don't see myself wanting to return to this after I finish my campaign unless the devs fix the ridged structure of the game.
Do not buy it if you don't want to shell out 50 USD for four "seats" which are mandatory for the "Guest Pass". The worst part is that the main page doesn't mention the MANDATORY 15$ MINIMUM for VTT compatibility anywhere, the map maker effectively costs 10$ and being able to use the VTT with friends is 15$ per person or 50$ for a bundle of 4, the only positive is that "seats" are universal, so if you have multiple games and bought multiple seats, you basically "add your seats to the pot" so players without any in their possession will have one.
It is not a quick and easy tool and does not do what I need it to do. I recomend adding Pre-built maps & More note taking tools. if they are allready in it, they are not in a userfriendly location.
After 2k hours, I feel like I owe this game a review. I'll try to keep it short. Pros: -3D Map, excellent for vertical encounters and impressive structures. Good for player retention too, especially for visual players. -Has all the basic tools to run encounters without overcomplicating things. -Good performance. Runs well on potatoes, unless you're making giga maps. -Easy learning curve. Controls are simple, you only need a few hours of map making to get the hang of it. The tutorial is less than amazing but you're probably a GM/DM so you likely have the brainpower to handle it. -Great copy/paste tools. This saves me a lot of time and allows you to easily port maps between campaigns. -Devs are pretty cool, they regularly post updates. -Solid ambient sounds and songs library. -Day/night effects and light positioning look great and add a lot to the player experience. -Can support a fairly large number of models at the same time. Mids: -No native character model editor but theres mods and third party editor support (HeroForge and TitanCraft). Using HF or TC can be quite expensive. -No native character sheet system, but third party symbiotes fill that niche moderately well. Not amazing, would be better if it was native, but it works. -The player-side limited view distance is weirdly low but its nice that theres an option for limiting view distance. Would be better if there was a value or slider GM-side to change this. -Building assets range from very high quality, fits nicely together, and looks great, to the opposite of all those things. The more recent assets the devs have added are really good but most of their older work lacks in at least one of those categories. Cons: -Time consuming map creation. Not great for throwing together quick encounters unless you use other people's slabs or you make a bunch of your own beforehand. -Purchase requirements. This wasn't an issue with any of my groups but I know some GMs might have a hard time convincing their players to drop $25 on a new TTS. -Theres only a small selection of character models, outside of third party options. -You can't layer ambient sounds. Not the worst thing but that would be a neat feature. In short; I like this system, it works for what I use it for, and I would recommend it to any GM running a TT game so long as their players can afford the price tag. You can always just stream it but the devs are adding more player-side features so that might take away from the experience. 9/10, if the devs keep up the work this game could become an industry standard in Tabletop Simulators.
