The meta, 4th wall breaking humor is great. The MC is a bratty, 10 year old princess who is adventuring because she hates homework. Sure, why not. :) The pixel graphics are also on point for this style of game. Pain Points: - You can not animation cancel out a physical attack by jumping. As a result, it feels like your jump command is getting ignored. This is especially a problem earlier in the game because dash is locked and you must jump to evade attacks. - The localization is a little rough in spots but I always understood what was being said.

This game is high brain material. Knuckle draggers and the likes just won't get it. Great playstyle, super leveling system, and the humors.. . *Chefs Kiss* Buy it and show the universe that you love yourself. Pleeb
Charming metroidvania-adjacent game with a lot of RPG elements. The story could use some work in how it's presented, but I'm enjoying myself so far.
Tales Of Wakana is a passion project that wears its inspirations proudly while attempting to carve out its own place in the crowded indie action-adventure landscape. Developed and published by OrangeTiger, the game invites players into the whimsical Wakana Continent, where Princess Dian Dian embarks on a journey that is equal parts coming-of-age tale and grand fantasy adventure. Rather than focusing solely on a single gameplay formula, the title embraces experimentation, presenting an experience filled with exploration, combat, puzzles, and an assortment of gameplay styles that continually reshape the player's expectations. At its core, the game is an action RPG with strong platforming elements. Dian Dian's arsenal consists of dual blades, axes, and elemental abilities tied to Ice, Lightning, and Wind magic. Combat encourages players to adapt to different enemy behaviors, and the gradual acquisition of new skills gives a satisfying sense of progression. The developers have packed the world with an impressive amount of content for an independent release, including dozens of side quests, a sizable roster of enemies, and numerous boss encounters. These battles often serve as the game's strongest moments, requiring players to combine movement, timing, and strategic use of abilities rather than relying on simple button mashing. Exploration is another area where Tales Of Wakana demonstrates considerable ambition. The continent itself is designed to reward curiosity, with hidden paths, collectible items, and optional objectives scattered throughout its stages. Fast travel options and detailed mapping systems help reduce unnecessary backtracking, allowing players to focus on discovering the world at their own pace. The title's variety extends beyond exploration, introducing gameplay diversions that range from puzzle-solving to mini-game-inspired challenges. This constant shift in pacing keeps the adventure from becoming repetitive, even if some mechanics feel more developed than others. Visually, Tales Of Wakana embraces a retro-inspired aesthetic that complements its fairy-tale setting. The environments are vibrant and imaginative, featuring castles, forests, and mysterious locations that help establish the game's playful tone. The soundtrack and sound effects contribute to the atmosphere, while the writing balances lighthearted humor with moments of sincerity. Princess Dian Dian proves to be an endearing protagonist, and her interactions with the world's many inhabitants help give the adventure personality. The game does not shy away from absurdity, often leaning into comedic scenarios and references that make the journey feel unpredictable. However, the game's greatest strength—its abundance of ideas—is also its biggest weakness. Tales Of Wakana occasionally struggles to maintain consistency, as some gameplay segments are noticeably more polished than others. Players seeking a tightly focused experience may find the frequent genre shifts distracting, and certain mechanics feel introduced more for novelty than necessity. The presentation, while charming, also reflects the limitations of a small development team, and there are moments where additional refinement could have elevated the overall experience significantly. Even with its rough edges, Tales Of Wakana succeeds as a celebration of creativity and enthusiasm. OrangeTiger has crafted a game that prioritizes fun, variety, and imagination over strict adherence to genre conventions. It may not appeal to every player, particularly those looking for a streamlined action RPG, but those willing to embrace its eccentric design will discover an adventure packed with content and personality. In an era where many games play it safe, Tales Of Wakana deserves recognition for its willingness to experiment and offer something genuinely distinctive. Rating: 6/10
