Tales of Monkey Island Complete Pack: Chapter 3 - Lair of the Leviathan

This is a review for all five chapters of the game Tales of Monkey Island, which is a 3D point & click adventure in the very long Monkey Island series (Secret of Monkey Island was the first PC game that I ever played, 35 years ago). The voice acting, the 3D graphics, the visual and spoken humour, and the sheer imagination of the developers, are all superb and very enjoyable. I quickly found myself back in the familiar and happy/silly/pirate-y waters of the Caribbean with Guybrush, Elaine, LeChuck, and others. But I have some reservations about the plot and associated puzzles. For the first couple of chapters I managed to work out nearly all of the puzzles myself, but in later chapters, as the puzzles became more involved but less intuitive (in my view), I increasingly struggled to progress without the use of a guide. One other frustration was the amount of tedious walking/running in the 3D world e.g. around the towns, around the woods, and - especially - around the underworld in the final chapter to move between portals/rips; better map shortcuts would have been very welcome. My play time across the five chapters was more than 23 hours for a total cost of UK £2.27, so, even allowing for the delays caused by the more obscure puzzles etc, I have no complaints about value for money. In summary, I had a very good time with the game, though some parts of its plot, puzzles and movement mechanics could have been tightened and improved. Farewell (until next time), Mighty Pirate!

Именно Tales of влюбила меня в эту серию, её непутёвых героев и порой абсурдные загадки. Возможно, свой вклад внесли вайбы по "Бешеному Джеку Пирату". И хоть в итоге я стал усреднённым фанатом серии который ставит первые две части выше всех остальных - но пятёрка занимает особое место в моём сердце. Сравнивая с другими частями, что выделяет конкретно эту - это её сюжет: местами жёсткий, местами он деконструирует сюжеты предыдущих частей. В остальном - вполне ГОСТовский квест. Порой даже жаль, что после этого Теллтейл ударились в интерактивное кинцо с минимумом загадок. Третий эпизод - если встретите Мюррея прошу вернуть его по приложенному адресу. На мой взгляд - один из самых запоминающихся эпизодов. По крайне мере, здесь сюжет окончательно раздупляется и появляются серьёзные ставки.

Note: I'm writing the same review for all 5 episodes, since they're basically just one game cut into 5 separate titles, instead of one single package. Tales of Monkey Island, while developed by Telltale Games, keeps the same point-and-click formula of previous Monkey Island games, making it the fifth game in the series, instead of a side title which is typical of Telltale Games. It’s a decent game, with an interesting story, cool characters, and appropriate graphics and music. It also stays true to the Monkey Island series, although this time each chapter is part of a continuous story. The puzzles, however, are a mixed bag. They’re a bit on the difficult side, especially because there’s no proper hint system. You also need to walk and backtrack a lot, which gets annoying. The only shortcut you have is being able to skip dialogue. And the controls are meh. If you like the series, or point-and-click adventures in general, this is something I can recommend on sale, although there are better titles available. I would give this a neutral rating if I could.

Только начала нравиться работа разраба, как тут же с середины истории пошел какой-то бред, причем прямо со старта 3 эпизода. Когда понимаешь, что уже ближе к концу нулевых некоторые произведения сводились к биопроблемам и отношалкам, начинаешь разочаровываться в их сценаристах. Это даже как рофляна, которая пытается соответствовать подобной тональности данной игры, не работает и вызывает испанский стыд. Когда ты мелкий, ты на это внимания не обращаешь, потому что не напрягаешь свой моск, но в более старшем возрасте воспринимать такое уже не получается.

General Review about the series : I used to love this kind of adventure game back in my teens (the 90s), but now I find this kind of genre is not that interesting, maybe taste change as people aged. However, there is still a good humor and chuckle when playing this infamous series. Recommended buy if you are an adventure game fan or tell tale series fan. Specific remarks about Chapter 3 : It's ok, just the average in the series.
