Stonekeep is an ambitious, atmospheric dungeon crawler that feels like a bridge between classic grid-based RPGs and something more cinematic. Revisiting it now, what stands out most is just how bold it was for its time. The FMV-driven presentation - especially the intro - is genuinely cool, even today, and gives the game a distinct identity that separates it from its peers. Combined with excellent enemy sprite animations that are fluid and expressive, the game creates a world that feels alive despite its technical limitations. At its core, Stonekeep channels the DNA of classics like Wizardry and Eye of the Beholder, but pushes things forward with real-time gameplay and a stronger focus on immersion. Movement is still grid-based, but combat and exploration feel more immediate, making it easier to get into than many of its contemporaries. It really does feel like the next evolutionary step for dungeon crawlers of that era - an attempt to blend traditional mechanics with a more cinematic, story-driven experience. The atmosphere and tone carry a lot of weight here. The story itself is fairly straightforward on the surface, but the world-building and characters - along with those FMV sequences - help give it personality. There’s a sense of mystery and depth. That said, it’s not without challenge. Progression can be tough early on, especially with how scarce meaningful weapons and armor are. You’ll feel underpowered for a while, and survival requires patience and careful play. But for fans of old-school dungeon crawlers, that difficulty curve is part of the appeal - it makes every upgrade feel earned. All in all, Stonekeep is a fascinating and rewarding experience for those willing to meet it on its terms. It’s a snapshot of a time when developers were experimenting with how to evolve the genre, and even now, it holds up as a unique and memorable adventure worth revisiting.

Great fun. Old school fun.
